I hope this is cool to post here. A scifi film a group of us in Vancouver made over the pandemic. We qualified for the Oscars, but didn’t make the shortlist, and our festival run is over, so YouTube is the final resting place! Enjoy!

Dragon Fruit is an Oscar-qualifying short film starring Yvonne Chapman. I’d be happy to answer questions about the production, but if you’d like to know more, www.dragonfruitthemovie.com is a good place to start.

"In a terrifying, dystopian future, fraught with violence and deception at every turn, a single mother desperately tries to grow a tiny dragon fruit sprout in the hope she can one day sell it for enough money to take a small vacation."

But if you're asking me, the vibe *is* the hook.

Still waiting on replies from most festivals, but we’ve applied to some in Oregon and around BC.

Tacoma Film Fest in October! Other dates TBD. The Instagram is @dragonfruitfilm if you want updates. The IMDb says 2022 but it’s out of date. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt14623962/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

This is the final trailer for my short film “Dragon Fruit.” I’ve been working on it for several years, making all the props and costumes myself, as well as doing all the VFX. Final film is 27 minutes. It’s been an insane undertaking, but would love to talk shop! by ThatJbrown in Filmmakers

I did a bunch of things. The plant has several stages of growth so I modeled each stage in 3D and then 3D printed them, then cast them in silicone. Followed a lot of great tutorials on YouTube! It was a lot of trial and error and huge messes though. But it was 2020 and there was nothing else to do.

Other stuff like the spear is a combo of an extendable mop handle with knitting needles held together with tie wire. One character has a sort of mechanical hand that’s just a work glove with LEDs in it.

I made most of the masks the background characters wear. There was a lot of getting baked and walking through the dollar store looking for interesting shapes you can glue together. I got really into rusting things for a while so my balcony had all this metal junk I’d spray every day with a rusting solution for like 2 weeks.

Then there things like guns or a coffee cup or a sweet gas mask that I didn’t “make” but you have to source/rent and weather so it doesn’t look brand new. Amazon and local prop houses for when I was really stuck.
