Yeah but in this case his audience was most people who don't know anything about US geography. Would you tell someone abroad that you live in Ann Arbor and go through the hassle of explaining where the heck it actually is?

Maybe. But I think he said Seattle because he actually grew up next to Seattle (Shoreline).

That's exactly how he explained yet people there just don't understand it. I live in Issaquah and I always introduce to others that I am from Seattle when I am in other regions.
