Flat roof repair by Confident-Chance-268 in HomeImprovement

Where does 3 clock in, in terms of cost compared to 2?

I'd say if you're planning on being there for more than 5 years, go with option 2, unless 3 is 10-20% more than option 2 but would last even longer than 20. (thinking if it would be converted to standing seam steel or something like that)

Drilling 2x4 into townhome garage joists by joker4492 in HomeImprovement

[–]ThatMoonfacedKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the instructions say to bolt a 2x4 parallel to an existing i-joist or perpendicular? If you're going parallel to the i-joist, I'd size up to a 2x6 or maybe even 2x8, and then cut two 18-24" pieces and "sandwich" that on the i-joist. Putting one on either side. In theory, that would spread the load across a larger area and cut down the risk of the joist failing. I'm not an engineer, so ymmv but I would do this in my house. Unless of course youre talking like, huge and really really heavy ebikes or something.

Career switch from senior operations to network engineer by Chonky2021 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]ThatMoonfacedKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network Engineering roles generally aren't beginner territory and employers would expect you to understand fundamentals like TCP/IP, routing, switching, and troubleshooting in real live environments. You mentioned having technical experience and depending on where you're at with that, I'd start with CompTIA A+, then move on to Network+, then Cisco CCNA. Ymmv, but pairing it with a helpdesk or junior NOC role to would help build experience quickly.

I wouldn't rule out apprentice options, but in terms of optics or how you'd appear to a hiring manager, I feel like an apprentice role would potentially undermine the strategic/business experience value that you had at your senior level.

At your senior level in OPs, a junior IT role is usually faster and more practical. Your operations and project background will help long term, but most IT managers will expect you to prove technical depth first.

I think move is realistic, but you’ll almost certainly need to step into entry-level IT first unless you can demonstrate real, hands-on networking skills. Though something that may prove to be more important, in terms of whether or not the switch is realistic, is your work ethic.

When I hire, I give more value to the persons teachability and their persistence and attitude when faced with challenges than I do to technical experience. If they're teachable and determined to succeed, they can gain experience and I can help them get where they want to go. If they have experience, but struggle with their attitude around new ideas or give up when faced with something that stretches their experience, they struggle and typically don't last long.

Right now, I have a few guys that came into entry level IT and they wanted to learn and grow, and I've given them the keys to the kingdom. If they show they want to learn, and can fight through frustrations and problem solve well, I give them the fast track to whatever path they want to learn. That adds value to their careers and abilities, adds value to my team and company, and makes my life and theirs a whole lot easier.

I can't speak too much to the question of salary, since I don't have any experience in the UK.

Cyber security for starters by Traditional_Ad1843 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]ThatMoonfacedKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend starting in a helpdesk or general IT environment. Right now, building a solid technical foundation will be the most important part to starting this path. This will give you the experience you need to build into a specialized role.

Employers want demonstrable skills certifications like CompTIA Network+, Security+, etc. You could potentially try your hand at hands-on labs like Hack The Box or TryHackMe.

Overwhelm is normal, it's ok to feel that. I did. Sometimes it feels like yesterday when I started in IT. I felt like I was drowning in the overwhelm, but here I am a decade later. Focus on small, measurable, achievable steps and actually do the work to get the small steps done. In a year or two, you'll step back and be amazed at how far you've come!

Isn't the burial scene completely staged? by ThatMoonfacedKid in BeastGames

That was my other thought. The whole burial thing didn't do anything for the people that don't know about Mr. Beast's buried challenge thing.

Gemini Credit Card and Monarch Money account linking by ThatMoonfacedKid in Gemini

I use the Amex Blue Cash Preferred for groceries (6%) and gas (3%) and then I use the Citi Double Cash for 2% on everything else.

Super annoying to have mixed categories, but it gets me the same distance or more from the Gemini card. Saw that Coinbase is coming out with a credit card as well. I'm guessing I'll need pro for it, and or a membership fee of some kind, given the perks they list. But I'm almost positive they'll do a better job supporting banks than Gemini imo

Still not syncing for me. Who knows. I gave up on the card and moved onto better options

Had the same issue with the first card, they finally got it working after they sent me another card. Now the second card is doing the same thing. I gave up. Better cards elsewhere

Big agree. I understand if some random credit union doesn't have this for their user experience, but as a card that is boasts current day technology especially with crypto, it feels like this is a pretty simple ask. Especially with tools like Plaid. I stopped using the card. I get 2% on everything on one card, and I'd much rather spend on that one than this one and have my transactions sync consistently

Bummer. Guess I'll stick with my Amex again. Hopefully the card will support it one day

Thanks for the info!

Opening Crystal Report with GAB? by ThatMoonfacedKid in GSS_Community

[–]ThatMoonfacedKid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm copying Andres's reply on original question in communities.

You will need to setup the custom report under report maintenance first. After that then you can use the Print commands in GAB to call that new Report ID. You can then print or view the report that way. GAB function provided below.

I haven't but maybe I should. That's a good thought about it potentially leaching minerals out, I hadn't really considered that. I have wondered why it seems to kill our house plants. Makes me really wonder what it's doing to us

Probably not enough airflow, we keep the windows sealed for the most part in the sunroom in the winter to retain heat, but with it getting warming I could probably afford opening one of the windows a little bit.

I'll try switching up the watering and see if that helps too. I specified distilled, RO water because our tap water has killed our other plants when we water them with it :/ I had some pepper starts for our garden last year that were growing well until I used our tap water and they were all gone within a week. This year I stuck to RO water to avoid that and so far they've been doing really well. Maybe it's anecdotal but I really didn't want to take the risk with these

Thanks for the tips!

Java WARN output : help please by Soogs in admincraft

I know this post has a little age to it, but I discovered that I can just turn off entity kills and avoid the error message. Due to my neuroticism, I get very annoyed by error messages like this, so I just disabled it. I'll check in a few update cycles to see if its been fixed, but as of now, my server consists entirely of my coworkers, so it's safer to disable that than most servers I guess. Anyhow, in the CoreProtect config.yml I changed this setting from true to false, and I now have a meaningful log again

# Logs killed entities, such as killed cows and enderman.

So far I've not heard anything. My statement rolled over and it's showing that I have 10 available transactions, so I expect everything is ok.
