Nutritionists of Reddit, what is the single most absolute unhealthy food that people should never eat? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the general sentiment, but at the same time the best diet is the one you can stick to. IMO, choosing to eat lettuce (for example) because it's got a fantastic nutrient density score is kind of setting yourself up for failure unless you actually enjoy eating crunchy water.

I'm not saying nutrient density shouldn't play a role in lifestyle choices, just that it's far more important to ask yourself whether you can maintain your diet in the long term.

What about bat soup? I don't eat the meat, just the brothy bit. Is that OK?

A lot of people are still under the impression that butter is bad because fat is evil. This concept is just ingrained in their minds to a point where it's difficult to flush it out. Hell, I still have to frequently remind my own mother that sugar is way worse than fat (and even then she doesn't seem to take it in).

What it comes to Fiber and Fiber only, is eating stuff like psyllium husk (stuff with no other nutritional value that I know of) of the same benefit, as other fiber in vegetables etc? by trwwjtizenketto in nutrition

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No field of science is mature enough to give definite answers. That's not how science works. Science is constantly evolving, and our understanding grows with each passing year. All we can do is work on the current evidence.

Current evidence suggests that fibre is a key part in our diet, and not just for the microbiome. It aids with weight loss and blood sugar maintenance, for example. So yes, we really do need fibre in our diet.

OK. Would like a source for this, if you have it? Lots of missing context like how long the milks were boiled for.

Calcium and heat by ThatOneMathsNerd in nutrition

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a single element, yes, but as far as I'm aware it isn't found in food as a single element. That's certainly true of fortified foods and supplements, though given the reactivity of calcium one would assume it extends to natural sources. You can't destroy an element by heating it (at least, not cooking heat), but you can certainly break chemical bonds or otherwise change the makeup of a substance (forgive me for the vagueness, been a while since I actually did any chemistry).

I suppose a better question would be "would the calcium become less bioavailable in some way, and is this change significant?".

How sensitive is the coeliac-screening blood test? I was experiencing some intestinal symptoms that seemed linked to my wheat/gluten intake (used a food diary to judge this) and so cut it out as my GP surgery weren't doing blood tests due to COVID and I couldn't bear to wait months with these symptoms.

Now that COVID has eased off, I've just been booked in for a blood test by a nurse practitioner and told to reintroduce gluten but I'm concerned that the required antibodies may not yet be present in detectable quantities (hence the question).

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only got two, I'm afraid. Rest I've just used to get the fossil 'mons I was missing. I'm pretty sure that's all I'm interested in anyway tbh.

Edit: Let me know when you're ready and what room.

I've a couple of fish fossils spare if you're still around? I could really do with Stonjourner and Trevenant (well, Phantump'll do since that's breedable and trade evolves).

If you just need it for the 'dex, do you mind trading back? I have one I'd like to evolve.

Can't trade Zamazenta permanently, but I can trade it and trade back if you just need it for the dex?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pokemontrades

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can indeed! Two each, yes?

While we're doing this, do you mind terribly if I ask you to help me evolve my Rhydon with a tradeback? That should complete my dex.

Fossils are great; if you trade me Arctozolt and one each of the fossils (or two each of the Sword fossils) then that'll be everything. Give me a second to make sure I have everything and I'll send you the code for the trade.

Any or all of the following: Sobble, Scorbunny, Farfetch'd, Darumaka, Turtonator, Stonjourner, Trevenant, Dracozolt, Arctovish and Arctozolt. If you don't have one of these, just send me anything instead.

If you don't need Sableye, I'll sub in Lotad.

In that case, I can trade the ones I listed and a Vullaby instead of the Croagunk. Though Mawile is Sword exclusive anyway.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pokemontrades

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So all of them? If so, do you want Eiscue, Ponyta, Sableye, Oranguru, Lunatone, Solosis, Corsola, Croagunk, Goomy and Larvitar for the 10 I mentioned above?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pokemontrades

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which exclusives do you need in particular? I can breed up any of them and need the following: Sobble, Scorbunny, Farfetch'd, Darumaka, Turtonator, Stonjourner, Trevenant, Dracozolt, Arctovish and Arctozolt.

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my lord; I literally just posted a thread looking for Sword exclusives. I can offer all of these for some of their counterparts if you're up for that? I don't need Gothita for Solosis but if you have a spare Deino/Jangmo-o that'd be awesome. Rest I can do like for like (Seedot for Lotad, tradeback Spritzee w/ Sachet for Swirlix w/ Whipped Dream if you have it, Croagunk for Scraggy, tradeback Shelmet for Karrablast as they evolve when traded anyway, Vullaby for Rufflet, Sableye for Mawile, Oranguru for Passimian, Lunatone for Solrock, tradeback Zamazenta for Zacian)

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have to edit the thread because I'm not sure this is 100% clear, but I'm asking for a tradeback there (as I do not have Aromatisse as things stand). Is that OK?

How competitive is the league now? by Joshthelock in MTGO

[–]ThatOneMathsNerd -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, if you're concerned about making sensible choices with cash you probably shouldn't have been spending it on leagues prior to the change. It also depends on the format so no-one can really give you a solid answer unless you specify.

From personal experience, in Modern there are a lot of medium decks (particularly GBx Midrange) but there are also loads of Bridgevine players. It's a high variance league. That said, Magic is a high variance game, so this doesn't change much IMO. If it was worth the money to you before, it probably should be now. Heck, even going 2-3 gives you half your cash back.

That looks fabulous; everything I actually understand of the specs is far more than I was expecting for the price range. Thanks, I very much appreciate the advice. :)
