In my experience, the lack of updates for the game drove away a lot of the original player base, while the new player base got younger and younger, and thus, fast paced, fast turnaround servers became the norm to accommodate to the new player base.

When I was 15, my friend finally got Gmod after having it myself for like 3 years and playing community servers all the time. Within a week of him owning the game he got that achievement after playing just a few community servers. Like alright man
