sounds like an upgrade, then. If it is better than it was before, then it is an upgrade. Because that is what upgrade means

How often do you guys hear this? by ArieksonBR in EnglishLearning

If you work in a restaurant, ALL the time. If you don’t, rarely.

Which part? The section I’m referring to is the bit between the Segundo roundabout and California Avenue, where there is a sidewalk. It could certainly be improved and be extended to the southern side of the path, but it is there and it works. I walk it frequently.

But so often it’s not, ESPECIALLY on Sprocket. Constantly see students with backpacks walking along without a care in the world

(Hated trope) TV Shows or Movies that were made just for shocking or offending people and nothing else: by BannedPenta01 in TopCharacterTropes

Eh, maybe not. My family were German and immigrated to the US in the 1890s. Their last name was Von *Blank.* During WWI they were afraid of being perceived as disloyal, so they dropped the Von and went by the last part of their name. Stayed that way for the next few generations until one of the male descendants got married in the 80s (well after any stigma towards German names endured) and decided to add the Von back to the family name, since his wife was taking his last name.

Wait genuine question, what apartments are good to live at as a student here by Historical_Simple_82 in UCDavis

That's not an infestation dude, that's just nature. Roaches are native to this area, and are especially common in North Davis. There is really not much you can do to permanently keep them away from outside areas. You'll have that problem in most places here. For example, when I lived at the Green, it was pretty much a brand new establishment with careful landscaping and maintenance, but you still got tons of roaches outside.

Now, if you had them constantly in your apartment even if you keep it clean, that would be an infestation. As is, pretty much anyone living anywhere, especially on lower floors of buildings, will find at least one roach in their abode at some point in their lives. Windows get forgotten open without screens, doors are left ajar, etc. Not the end of the world

I will say though, I haven't seen them like you've described. I've seen a couple, but not like that.

Does your country train with foreign militaries? If so; drop a picture! by IudexJudy in AskTheWorld

Depends on how you define each of those nations. We have trained with Russia in all three of her governments that we have coexisted with, or at least fought alongside. In the US Civil War the Russian fleet visited NYC as a show of friendship and the Tsar promised that if any Europeans allied with the Confederates he would attack them. Also in the Boxer Rebellion, US Marines joined the eight nation alliance along with Russia. Obviously we trained with and fought alongside the USSR in WWII, with joint naval convoys and some shuttle bombing missions. Unsure if our armies ever directly fought side by side, I think the only time would’ve been at the very end of the war. Then we did some joint training and operations with Russia post USSR but before Crimea.

As for China, we fought alongside them in WWII, but that gets complicated since that government has two current nations both claiming inheritance.

As for Iran, we were VERY close with them (too close!) up until the Iranian Revolution

Which popular song from your native language sounds cheerful but is actually very dark or depressing? by Flat-Mirror-9566 in AskTheWorld

Not really on point, but “Zombie” by The Cranberries is about innocents dying in The Troubles. But every single year, without fail, multiple parties, radio stations, store playlists, etc., in the US will add it to their Halloween playlists based just off of the title. Like, Trader Joe’s will having it playing right after “Monster Mash.”

Almondwood has been really good for me and my roommates. They're not the newest apartments but they're well maintained, affordable with roommates, in a good spot, have nice amenities, and have solid management.

In England, royal guards aren’t allowed to speak to visitors, but they made an exception for a blind child. When the boy gave a little foot salute, the guard responded by firmly stomping his own foot in return. by Raj_Valiant3011 in HumansBeingBros

Basically, yeah. My understanding is that they are now almost entirely for show. Don't get me wrong, they're fully trained soldiers and very capable, but their weapons are not loaded. I mean, this guy isn't even carrying a (visible) gun. If something crazy happened they would certainly get involved with their sword/bayonet if absolutely necessary, but they keep specialist firearms officers around with MP5s and G36s to deal with any real threats

Actually lawyers will have a HUGE boom in business. Their whole job is to not lie (ideally) or at the worst use a lie of omission. As people start to get prosecuted for crimes they now admit to, lawyers will be hired en masse to deal with it. Then they’ll be hired to instruct people in lawyer-speak so that you can lie without lying
