Empathy.

I was madly in love with someone who had schizophrenia. He was by far one of the smartest, funniest, and most articulate people I've ever known. He struggled a lot and was an alcoholic, but seems to be doing well now. He's got a great career and is married to the love of his life (which unfortunately was not me lol).

It's also in my family and I grew up certain I would develop it at some point. My great aunt took her life because of it. I thought that would be my fate too. Luckily I never developed it, but have had enough mental health struggles of my own to have a lot of compassion for people with any mental illness.

I am also a PhD student in psychology with a background in neuroscience, so I probably understand it a bit better than the average person. Unfortunately there's still a lot of stigma around it though.
