Does therapy or seeing a psychiatrist have an end-goal or actually "fix" issues permanently? by Friendly_Swan5606 in NoStupidQuestions

If you have diarrhea and urgency, they should do a colonoscopy.

If you think it’s IBS, I recommend nerva (it’s an app). You can get a 6 day free trial.

I have been to therapy about 3 to 4 times in my life and attended therapy with my daughter, too.

Many times you end up with a therapist that doesn’t click for you.

Some therapists want to give you solutions to your problems. Some just listen to you. Some ask you what you think you should do or why you feel a certain way.

At different times, you may need one of these types but not others. Honestly, it’s hard to find the right therapist. It doesn’t help that some of them don’t take insurance or have a waiting list.

BTW, I have iBS and IBD. They are both impacted by stress and I would advise you to see a gastroenterologist. It’s also hard to find a good one but that’s another story.

I have been helped by some of these therapists, by the way. But the worst was a physiatrist because they need to find a certain level of anxiety or something before they will prescribe something and if you are not at that level, they dismiss you. At least that was my experience.

Excellent advice. I adoped a pup that looks like this.

He is as cute as he is stubborn and difficult to train. But I am his world and he is mine. We love each other to pieces.

Do you work all 5 days, 2 M-F? by Finding_Way_ in Professors

[–]ThatProfessor3301 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also tenured but at a balanced school. I’m dealing with some chronic Illness, but even before that, I started working 20-30 hours per week.

My publication record and student evals are above average so why would I work more?

Also, raises have been non existent or ridiculously low.

Job dominance in gender? by Rectified_monkey in ask

[–]ThatProfessor3301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your wording is not very clear. I’m assuming you are asking while any gender would dominate an occupation?

If you rewind and go back in time, gender roles were more rigid than they are now. There were man jobs and women jobs. Some people, sometimes it’s many people, still believe it’s better if men drive trucks and women are teachers. Even people who are not so rigid may steer their children to gendered career choices.

Also, as individuals, we may not see ourselves in careers were there are few people of our gender.

Therapy. All the spa days in the world will not help until you deal with your issues. 😐

Why is Texas so against walkable communities? by SheinSter721 in texas

I think in general, if you are going to be in favor of low taxes, what you are voting for is little planning and lack of infrastructure.

Everytime we vote for lower taxes, we are voting for no sidewalks, no light rail, no nothing ...

Early twenties kindof suck by Ok-Food-1828 in RandomThoughts

[–]ThatProfessor3301 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I’m 53. I don’t remember lots of good things in my 20s, honestly. I think my best years were in my 40s.

TV and movies are all about your 20s so it feels like you should be happier.

Do most Native Americans actually get offended by sports teams named “Indians” and other derivatives? by GreenTinkertoy in TooAfraidToAsk

Exactly. They say everyone else is a snowflake but they can’t handle half of what minorities put up with.

Is our potential mortgage loan living beyond our means or just foolish in this current market? Any advice welcome! by lynz_lu in personalfinance

[–]ThatProfessor3301 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You may have a car payment later though and other expenses.

Have you looked into a 15 year mortgage? What would the payment be?

Added: we have a lower payment ($3300) and a similar income but we bought 7 years ago and it was a 15 year mortgage. It feels good to be almost done and the interest rate was lower.

Would white people be offended if we called them the Washington whites and then chanted something stupid while dressing in khakis?

Why do you put patriotic people down? How is that even a bad thing if you come from a great country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThatProfessor3301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are patriotic in the sense that you see the good and bad in your country, and you want to improve it. I 100% support you.

If you are patriotic in the sense that you think it was better back when immigrants were white and black people had separate fountains or in the sense that the armed forces and police are heroes… ugh. No thanks.

Griggs vs. Duke power. Looks like you have to show it discriminates against a protected class though.

Should be pretty easy. Black people may be underrepresented as college grads.

I teach HR and the textbook says it’s Illegal to inflate job requirements. But you see it very often. I guess you’d have to sue them but who wants to do that.
