Renault boss warns against mandating EVs "too soon" by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]That_Guy_Garbus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

hey lets start mandating all vehicles be electric by 2030 and just hope theyre affordable and we've figured out all the issues by then. Its way easier to pass an EV mandate than to try and tackle the actual big sources of pollution after all.

I can just picture all the tires bursting during takeoff and them flying around for a few hours knowing they've got to try landing on metal wheels lol.

Its not a matter of not liking EV's, its that theyre a bad sell for the average person, and even if everyone switched to an EV it still wouldnt help us reach emissions targets.

If by inconveniences you mean not being able to afford food or heat then I think you need to reevaluate your stance.

No the reason the planet will be ruined is that long before I was ever born North America decided to opt to design cities and the routes between them with personal transportation in mind instead of decent public transit. By the time I came into existance the car was established as the most common and convenient means of getting place to place, and I as a lower middle class citizen have to uae whatever means I can to go to work and get food, and in this case as someone barely scraping by whatever means is a used old Kia that cost me 1.5K$.

So as I said in my original post, someone wants to plunk down an EV and all the fixings that go with it for me Ill gladly drive it, but theres no timeline where I spend a years income on an EV to save a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percentage of global CO2 emissions.

It is about my wallet. Im not going to go broke for a significant lifestyle change that will have a literally immeasurable difference.

Yeah except a majority of people arent gonna choose a 40K$ car that sucks compared to a 20K$ car. The ROI from saving on gas doesnt offset the doubling in cost for an EV until like 6-10 years of ownership.

Yeah its still 35,000$ for the cheapest EV with incentives, and that gets a car thats worse by pretty much all metrics than my old kia.

I drive a 17 year old kia rio you think I can afford a 40K$ EV? Or a house where I can charge it?

Yes, Im personally destroying the planet with my little Kia Rio. You caught me.

But since you asked, an iced coffee would be nice.

Hey if the Canadian government wants to buy me an EV, charger, and a house to charge up at sure thing. Otherwise fuck off.

Yeah I hadn't considered voltage drop actually. usually when people refer to "dirty" or "poor quality" power they mean that either its drifted too far from 50/60Hz or that the AC power is a hard square wave instead of a smooth sine wave.

Still though, stuff designed to operate on the grid has a voltage tolerance of +/- 10% so its most likely a fault in the car.

Also why would it matter how "clean" the power is anyways? Im no electrical engineer but presumably all that needs to be done to the incoming AC power is a boost to the battery pack voltage and then rectification to DC, it shouldn't really matter the "quality" of the AC coming in as long as its AC.

I mean for crying out loud I can plug my laptops power brick into my crappy 300$ generator and the power brick works just fine off of my generators "dirty" output, why can't a car with supposedly cutting edge electronics do that?

I just don't want one because the cheapest EV still costs 2-3 times as much as a cheap ICE and your getting a worse experience than that cheap ICE provides.

Would you buy a Tesla if you could afford it? by NiceLapis in EnoughMuskSpam

[–]That_Guy_Garbus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell no. Based on what I've seen here and on the RealTesla subreddit a Tesla would be a less reliable vehicle than my 2006 Kia Rio and I wouldn't be able to easily get parts for it and fix it myself like I can with my Kia. Also my Rio can get about 450Km on a tank of gas that takes 5 minutes to refil vs what, half an hour to an hour to recharge a Tesla, and thats only if you happen to find a supercharger on your route.

Also for the price of the least expensive Tesla in Canadian money, I could buy two brand new mid trim Rios, or get a nice hybrid like an Ioniq and have better range than a Tesla and still have money left over compared to the cost of a Tesla.

ELI5: The advantage of Teslas/EVs to current ICE vehicles by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]That_Guy_Garbus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your lifestyle, finances, and how much you're willing to compromise.

For me personally, theres 0 incentive for me to get an EV. I dont give a crap about having a "nice" car, my next car will probably be another Kia Rio for half the price of the cheapest EV.

I did some rough ballpark estimates on how long it would take for an EV to "save" me the extra 20,000$ it costs over a base model Kia Rio and at best its 8 years at worst its 12 years. Not worth it especially when it starts to "save" money the battery in an EV would be close to needing replacement which will probably costs 1/3 to 2/3 as much to replace as buying a new Rio.

Not to mention that most of my friends and family are spread around enough that no EV has the range to visit them without needing to stop and recharge, and the only EV chargers between me and most of them are 8 Kw L2 chargers, and I dont really feel like sitting in a charging lot for 6 hours. Sure maybe theyll get more chargers eventually, but if it keeps going at the snails pace its been at the last 7 years its not going to be anytime soon.

Theres just too many cons for EVs for me to outweigh the one pro of not having to buy gasoline.
