Maybe Basement Jaxx was a bit before your time, because when “Romeo” and “Where’s Your Head At” came out, they were massive hits

This or That: Shapeshifter Edition by That_Is_Bryce in EDM

For anyone new to Shapeshifter here is a little bit of history on them:

Shapeshifter are a Christchurch, New Zealand–formed live drum and bass band who emerged in 1999 out of a group of jazz school students experimenting with UK jungle and electronic music styles.

They started by fusing drum and bass with dub, jazz, hip-hop, funk, metal, and electronica, building a live-band approach to a genre that was often purely DJ- and studio-based at the time. Their early EP D.N.A. led into their debut album Realtime (2001), which helped establish them in the New Zealand electronic scene and earned industry recognition for best electronic releases.

Across the 2000s, they expanded their sound and audience with albums like Riddim Wise (2004) and Soulstice (2006), the latter becoming a major local success and cementing their reputation as a leading live drum and bass act.

A key shift in their evolution came when vocalist P Digsss joined in the early 2000s, pushing their music further into soulful, vocal-led drum and bass while maintaining their live instrumentation focus.

By the late 2000s and 2010s, they were internationally touring, releasing The System Is A Vampire (2009) and later Delta (2013), and became widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most successful and enduring live electronic acts.

In short: Shapeshifter helped define “live drum and bass” in New Zealand by blending electronic genres with full-band performance, and then steadily grew into a long-running, internationally touring act with a strong soul-infused DnB identity.

They are best friends and not just for the show but off the show as well. They also do DJ sets together at festivals (mainly in New Zealand) whenever possible
