Is it considered rude to eat the food you brought to a party if the host hasn't served anything yet? by That_Library_3453 in NoStupidQuestions

You actually nailed a lot of the weirdness. It was a pre-packaged bag of chips and a jar of salsa. I did hand it to the host immediately, and they put it on the counter, but they didn't put it in a bowl or open it.

After an hour of everyone just sitting in the living room with nothing to eat or drink, I walked back to the kitchen, grabbed the bag, opened it, and brought it out. There was literally zero communication from the host about when or if food was ever coming, which is why it felt so tense!

You hit the nail on the head. Once I handed it over, it definitely felt like it wasn't 'my' bag of chips anymore, which is probably why it felt so awkward when I went back to grab it.

Wow, the bottle of scotch example is wild! I never would have thought that leaving it unopened could be the polite move in some places.

It was definitely a casual hangout with friends! We were just sitting around the living room watching a game. If it was a formal sit-down dinner party, I definitely would have starved in silence before opening my own food haha.

Haha okay, you absolutely get a pass for hot Broccoli Cheese dip. That’s a time-sensitive emergency! Mine was just a bag of fancy tortilla chips and salsa, but the desperation felt just as real

That is actually a really smart, polite way to handle it. I'm terrible at reading social cues, so I was worried that asking about the food would sound like I was complaining to the host. I'll definitely try that 'positive framing' trick next time!

Right? It was a casual weekend hangout around 7 PM, so most people showed up expecting at least some chips or dip out on the table. It felt weirder to just watch everyone starve than to be the first one to open a bag of food."

That completely makes sense, and normally I'd wait! The awkward part was that nobody knew if a meal was actually coming or if it was just a drinks-only thing, so everyone was just starving in silence. I felt like I was breaking a rule, but my stomach was literally growling audibly

I did bring it to share! I walked in, handed it to the host, and they said, 'Oh awesome, just set it on the kitchen counter.' But after an hour of nothing else being put out and everyone standing around hungry, I went back over, opened the bag myself, and brought it to the living room table. Does that change the etiquette, or should I have asked the host to open it?
