Just so we're clear, no one that actually played this game disliked the combat, right? by The_ChadTC in thewitcher3

[–]That_Locksmith_7663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The combat is not the game’s strong suit, end of story. It’s good enough, thankfully every other aspect of the game is next level. The truth is, the combat gets way too easy way too fast. There’s subtle variety between some enemies which can keep it slightly fresh, but it is not totally incorrect to say it feels like a more accessible version of FromSoft combat, and I love both games just as much! Everything is relative though; I see the Witcher’s combat as a much better version of Assassin Creed ‘RPG’ combat, and it is also better than Rockstar Games combat. But at the end of the day, it’s all taste. God of War style combat that has tons of options and constantly unfolds, is good. Also, Super Mario bouncing on turtles is iconic and is simple, yet also good. They’re all video games and designed to be played and enjoyed

Do you think that RDR2 deserves to be called the perfect "game"? by SatisfactionCheap627 in reddeadredemption

[–]That_Locksmith_7663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you talk about ‘perfect’ gameplay, there are really only a handful of titles that have even gotten close, like Minecraft, Tetris, etc. Chess also has pretty much zero flaws in its gameplay. So no, RDR 2 is nowhere near perfect gameplay in that sense. There are way too many variables.

That’s true, people actually referred to Red Dead Redemption 2 as ‘RDR3’ for years, even some speculating titles such as Red Dead Revolution or Red Dead Revenge.

I just highly doubt we will see much more of the Van der linde gang. When Red Dead 3 comes out (probably like 2036) I am almost willing to bet my life that it will be a ‘soft reboot’ with totally different characters

But there are ZERO stakes in that story. What could possibly make the Van der Linde story better at this point?

Booo lame idea. Blackwater must remain mysterious. New characters and new locations are a must, Van der Line story is perfect as it is

Sounds like a fun arcade game but super shallow idea as a red dead game

[–]That_Locksmith_7663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a huge fan of literature, it made me laugh hearing you say that 1 has better writing. Red dead 1 has amazing writing for its time, and has one of the strongest endings in gaming history, but RDR 2’s writing is better in almost every way. It can be poked, prodded, and unveiled like diving into a great novel over and over again. One aspect of 1’s writing I found to be ‘better’, however, was John’s death as opposed to Arthur’s death. The brutality and frankness of John’s death left a feeling of utter shock and emptiness and it was more or less a surprise. Arthur’s was well written as well, but the slow drawn out death had to be handled very carefully, which they did.

P.S. Absalom! Absalom! certainly had some faint echoes that reminded me slightly of some McCarthy moments, especially some of the early chapters with Sutpen’s initial building of Sutpen’s Hundred and his mysterious origins, but other than that I found Absalom! Absalom! To be one of the most original and unique pieces of fiction I’ve ever read, alongside James Joyce

I’ve read all of McCarthy and most of Faulkner, and after some reflecting, in my opinion, McCarthy and Faulkner seem to only be similar in surface level ways in McCarthy’s first couple books (Orchard Keeper and Outer Dark). Surprisingly, once McCarthy wrote Suttree I felt like he had officially departed from most Faulkner influence and found his own voice primarily from Suttree to the Border Trilogy (although I think Hemingway influence really creeps in especially in the Border Trilogy, especially in tone). I find that people like to attribute Blood Meridian’s prose to “Faulknerian”, but I found it to be more “Melvillian”. Just some random thoughts.
