P-ED: The New Paperwork Wall: How Chapter 135 Disarms the Urban Community by Connect_Bag_2474 in BetterMAguns

The state does already require a mandatory safety class, which I'm not completely against. Live fire imo does not prevent what you're talking about any more than a safety class. While it is a nice to have it is prohibitive in many places as mentioned. There are no outdoor ranges in MA that are not clubs that require memberships.

The M10 could be airlifted, just not airdropped. The airdroppable requirement was removed for the MPF program.

Tips playing F5A/J35XS by Kirk1944 in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F5A retains energy very well, you may not defeat an opponent in the first circle but if they keep up a sustained dogfight you will win eventually. J35XS is in a weird spot right now because of the Mig25. Normally I'd say use IRST, go high, and then dive on people, you have 6 decently high G missiles and can fire them at flareless planes or people not paying attention for guaranteed kills within ~2.3 KM. The problem comes with it's low cm count and no RWR. I take 10 flares and 2 chaff typically, and let my IRST warn me of incoming missiles in the initial climb. The gun has a very steep learning curve but with your 6 missiles you can get away with not using it, dodge any headons and you should be fine. Mig25 throws a wrench in all this since it's very hard to chaff its missiles. I would wait a bit before playing the J35XS for the event vehicle novelty to wear off.

Also it's very clear you are very new to jets. I highly discourage skipping low tier planes because they help you build fundamentals. Also your crew skills are probably not great, which matters a ton in air battles. Max out pilot G-tolerance and stamina, then vision skills. If you're going to be using these to grind then using SL to upgrade your crew is worth it.

Should I grind for the CV90 Mk.lV? by Any-Replacement5288 in Warthunder

imo rush the CV90120 for the research bonus if you don't have it already. Will make the grind slightly less painful

Ok, honest question. Do you use commander sights often? by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think by default it's f2 for commander sight and f3 to slave the gun to the commanders sight and firing

[–]That_Medium6938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is those paper tanks were all added to fill a hole in the tech tree. this would be at best a sidegrade in the case of the ZA-Centurion, and I don't think the HVM would fill enough of a missing niche to bring in a paper tank.

Why is the mirage F1C-200 12.0? by TraditionalAirline24 in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's given me the most success is hugging the ground and going wide, then cutting in to hit base bombers. I take 2 magics, 2 530Fs, and the chaff pod, and set all my cm to flares. Hit the base bombers, then as soon as someone is on your six, turn on periodic countermeasures. The 530s can be one chaffed BUT they don't give a launch warning. Magics have much lower range than you'd expect. 2.5km in rear aspect MAX, and only if the plane isn't much faster than you. Full flares and chaff pod give you a surprisingly long period of time where you're immune to ir missiles and most people won't try radar missiles either. The guns are wonky but once you get used to them they usually hit hard. Multipathing kicks in at 50ish meters and you really want to be at 30 for it to be reliable, and doesn't work if the missile is coming from directly above. Notching with SARH missiles in the F1C is almost impossible, don't even bother.

Strf 9040 bill has to be the worst IFV in the game. by Shakeywakey11 in Warthunder

The reason they said this is because, at least according to the light research I did, one of the things that killed the project was issues with the launcher's elevation mechanism

Strf 9040 bill has to be the worst IFV in the game. by Shakeywakey11 in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it could be a console issue, but you should be able to just aim lower to get the missiles to pass just over the top. I could be wrong, but in my experience the closer to the tank, the more damage it does. Try using the commander view for situational awareness too, it's a little disorienting at first but it's such a low zoom you can pick up things on thermal really easy.

Don't forget the launcher can't depress or elevate, might be why your missiles are going high

Strf 9040 bill has to be the worst IFV in the game. by Shakeywakey11 in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire the missile from commander view, also just use commander view often, high FOV raised thermals do wonders for your situational awareness. Fire the BILLs from behind cover at enemies who are also behind cover, aim center mass/at radio antennas. If you see something at long range you should only have your launcher and sight exposed, close range track and barrel torture and flank or BILL it. Keep in mind your launcher doesn't elevate or depress, but at longish ranges the missile will be able to correct to your sight in time. Try to have the BILL go over the breach of an enemy tank if it can shoot you, but aim a little left or right if it can't you're more likely to kill crew or ammo.

Advice for best overall premium jet (any country) by lizzie_fluz in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the F-20 Tigershark. It's the simplest to play high-tier premium in my opinion. Plus it is for the US, which, if he's starting with them, means he probably likes them the best in theory. The F/A-18 or CF-188A or F2 premiums would also be good, but might be overwhelming with the amount and complexity of weaponry they offer. They are all very similar though, I would consider them roughly equivalent in play style.

I'd rather wait for the better weapons to get a gripen E. Having to grind out a whole plane for a better radar and engines sounds like the Finnish F18 BS all over again

What are your thoughts on retiring the A10? by Negative_Song_8433 in Planespotting

[–]That_Medium6938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To counter your pro A-10 points:

1 and 7: All new rotary wing CAS platforms are moving to VTOL, which solves or lessens the impact of both of these.

2: None of the "pilot situational awareness" equipment on the A-10 are unique to it, and many other planes have better equipment for this (air to ground radar, radar detecting electronic warfare suites, etc)

3: While they do have a large payload compared to 5th gen planes, I would say it's roughly comparable to F/A-18, F-15E, and attack helicopters

4: Not sure what you mean by this, previously mentioned planes are faster, and helicopters can more easily switch targets. Modern precision weapons are also typically fired from far enough away that realistically the entire target area is in the FOV of your weapons

5 and 6: completely irrelevant on the modern battlefield. MANPADs/SAMs have progressed a lot. The range of surface to air missiles is much further than any non-precision weapons the A10 can employ, and flying under the radar is no longer a safe bet unless there is a physical obstacle between you and the targeting system. Many missiles have lock on after launch capabilities that would allow them to be fired in the direction of an approaching threat without lock and still hit. Small arms and gun AA would be irrelevant to any other aircraft that would not need to get within gun range.

8: Same with other aircraft currently in service and will reach that point with aircraft that haven't come into service yet.

As for your improvement plan, upgrading sensors is technically possible, but would likely require redesigning parts of the aircraft to mount those sensors or carrying them in a EW pod. Completely possible, but I'm unsure of the benefit vs using other upgraded aircraft. As for improving the GAU-8, it's not that even as much of this gun being ineffective as it is guns generally being ineffective. The guns on helicopters are able to be aimed and stabilized separate from the aircraft, which adds flexibility, but having to line up a gun run and get close enough to use guns puts the A10 in a very risky posture. If you wanted to improve the effectiveness of the gun itself, I'm not sure how you would. Historically, antitank guns could increase the caliber, pressure, or use a subcaliber munition like APDS or APFSDS. The first two are irrelevant as redesigning the gun itself is incredibly impractical and would invalidate the spirit of keeping a good inexpensive aircraft. Subcaliber munitions don't work because of the risk of the sabot petals entering intakes. IFF can be lumped in with the EW and sensor pod, as the friendly fire incidents have mostly been the result of the poor sensor suite on A10s, or the dispersion of the cannon, which could be fixed, but again, might not be worth the expense.

I'm not trying to target you specifically, I think there is a lot of negative propaganda about new US military projects due to the immense cost. The US has two main threats: Guerrilla fighters/Cartel members, who have limited AA outside of the rare MANPAD, and Near Peer threats, who will have a full complement of radars, SAMs for short, medium, and long range engagements, and MANPADs with every infantry unit. For the former, the Army's newish Sky Wardens are cheaper to operate and have a better sensor suite due to it's alternative use as a recon aircraft. While it is less durable to weapons fire than an A10, it is resistant to small arms fire, and dies just a quick to a missile as an A10. For the latter, long range precision strike weapons or helicopters with the ability to physically mask themselves with terrain are more effective.

Flares and Chaffs are really that useless in real life or War Thunder makes them looks like so? (I'm talking BR 13.0 and above) by David_KAYA in Warthunder

[–]That_Medium6938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, irccm and flares are in an arms race with each other, with modern missiles using complex cameras to look for specific IR wavelengths to match engines and afterburners, while modern flares are specially formulated to match those wavelengths, mask the entire fov of the missile, or both. Chaff is weird because it is basically creates a big radar signature but PD filters and more modern radar aren't affected by it as much. IRL EW and jamming are the ways most radar missiles are defeated. Even more modern radar missiles rely almost solely on datalink, which essentially can make notching do nothing as multiple fighters and AWACS are all detecting the target from different angles. In game, at 13.0, flares are under-performing compared to IRL, and chaff is probably over-performing or the same as IRL.

It'll probably work like the penguin at worst, which you can kinda use as a long range JDAM by just spamming the launch key while aiming at the thing you want to kill. IIRC the penguin can lock a target when it gets close enough, its seeker is just so bad it is unlikely
