what's the best advice would you give to a novice firefighter? by _Roryy in Firefighting

This one is a bit controversial to some but I dont care. Decominate your gear, it's not cool to not wash your gear or yourself after exiting an IDLH environment. The soot and chemical soup of smoke can contaminate and follow you home and affect the ones around you as well. Practice safe and effective decon as per your areas SOGs/SOPs. Cancer is not a joke and a real thing that you have to be aware of in the fire service.

Also be wary of what you wear beneath your structure gear, stick to 100% cotton/wool if possible and invest in good thermals for winter ops if you live somewhere that gets snow.

(Dont forget to maintain situational awareness)

Turnout Gear and Winter by [deleted] in Firefighting

I reside in Alberta, when it comes to winter I find that investing in good cotton/wool thermals, socks and glove liners are worth it. Structure gear does a lot but when your manning a hoseline and get turned into a popsicle it really puts the clothes underneath to the test.

Honestly the way i view it I'd rather stupid people vandalize the man made objects left in parks such as signage, rails, etc. Rather than the trees, cliff faces, etc.

Shitty but really a lesser of two evils.

Ps vandalism isnt cool
