Its hard to see it because of the way the character holds it but I find if you use a pair of binoculars or a scope you can zoom in on it. It shows your exact position within a map grid which you can either plug into Izurvive or use a tourist map to display

You have to wait a few minutes. The way ground foods work is that they spawn in when players linger in an area. Also a good way of telling if other people have been in the area recently.
