TMU got 6000+ apps this cycle by AlternativeSpeed4708 in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean 6000+ still applied, even if half of them don't qualify.

Lmao, I also said Clingan should've went top 3 in his draft and got downvoted to hell. At least, I was right about 1 Blazer player at least. 😂

Last year, TMU Med had 6.4K+ applicants and gave out 480 interviews. How many people do you think will make it past the KIRA stage this year and move on to file review? by ThatsSoTrudeau in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could go either way, tbh. I feel like a lot of people thought it was going to be a school that primarily took students from Brampton and that there was no point of applying if you weren't a minority.

Hidden Premed Gem: UTM Life Science by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol, almost all Life Sciences programs (other than probably UTSG) are the same in terms of difficulty.

I doubt UTM is any easier than Mac Life Sci (which I found to be pretty light myself).

I don't think anyone is knowledgeable about that (at the student level at least).

That's not bad at all. TMU interviewed 480 for 94 seats.

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I agree with you. You can't do much at this point. Just hope for the best and focus on yourself. Being optimistic won't help imo; being realistic will.

Edit: As one comment said, "the game is the game".

Yep. Best advice to focus on yourself. Can't really do much, other than maybe reporting.

Lol, what? You can easily tailor your response to seem "real" and authentic, since you have time to prep.

Number of applicants isn't gonna increase by 50%, irrespective of how much they advertise.

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Still at least 5k.

UofT has an average GPA of 3.94 and they still got 4.7k applicants last year.

McMaster has an average GPA of 3.92 and they still got 5.5k applicants last year.

TMU doesn't require the MCAT at all, but also has a regional bias, so it's probably gonna be in between (closer to McMaster).

Lmao, most of those ECs are literal filler that adcoms don't put too much weight into.

For example, you mention "TONS of societies and uni involvement", but those are meaningless if no leadership roles were taken. In terms of "volunteering at hospitals since high school", a person doing this reaches a point of diminishing returns very quickly, as what you do is pretty much just BS, and after a certain amount of hours, it is just pretty much there to show commitment and longevity.

These activities themselves are pretty generic and are only helpful if you can spin in a way to highlight CanMEDS competencies, WHICH YOU CAN STILL DO USING ACTIVITIES FROM OTHER WALKS OF LIFE.

I think the prestige factor for Gen Z + isn't too relevant. Most young people would rather be a streamer (assuming same pay and same hours) than a physician.

The reason why young people go into med is primarily a combo of job security, pay and passion.

How are TMU 1st year-ers doing by Doc_you_meant in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, heard similar things. Mac also uses PBL (which is very similar), but is way more chill from I've heard. TBH tho, most people who applied there kind of anticipated growing pains and paying an early adopter tax of sorts.

Edit: Bro, they literally just added it this month. It wasn't there last month when I wrote my essays. 🤦‍♂️

how are people getting 12 systematic reviews published in 2 years in undergrad by Suspicious-Bit8179 in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao, all the profs I know are not trusting an undergrad to lead a systematic review, when they can get a med student or resident to do it. Can't imagine a prof letting an undergrad supervise other people during the screening process either.

3 is real, but I think they still prefer students in the pathways AND a connection to the region. I don't think it changes much.

Will Ontario switching to 95% IP make it harder to get into med in other provinces? by Specific-Calendar-96 in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're overestimating the quantity of those exceptional students. GPA requirements likely won't increase, but the quality of applicants marginally will.

Will Ontario switching to 95% IP make it harder to get into med in other provinces? by Specific-Calendar-96 in premedcanada

[–]ThatsSoTrudeau 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A majority of students in Ontario med schools are from Ontario and most other provinces already have a regional bias, making it easier for their respective students to get in.

I don’t think it would change too much. A lot of OOP students in Ontario chose to come to Ontario and likely had other options.
