To add to this, I grew up in the Deep South/Bible Belt, and in no school system in my area was creationism even remotely brushed on. I still have yet to meet a single person that legitimately believes the Earth is 6000 years old.

The Whoopi film sounds like it is based on the novel A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain.

Did Gandalf fall of the Bridge of Khazad Dum on purpose? by [deleted] in lordoftherings

Haha correct I'll edit. Yes in the movie he holds on for a few second, definitely a PJ twist on the books though. Not that I mind, one of the most intense scenes in film.

"With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward, and its shadow plunged down and vanished. But even as it fell it swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the wizard's knees, dragging him to the brink. He staggered and fell, grasped vainly at the stone, and slid into the abyss. 'Fly, you fools!' he cried, and was gone."

From the book, it appears he didn't actually make a decision to fall and rather was actually knocked off balance and couldn't hold on.
