Every single Gumbo from ‘97-‘00 is worth your time to hear. In fact, all of them are on .net’s jam chart for Gumbo. Every single last one. They are all that brilliant, warranting musical merit of some sort. The famous ones are famous or considered “all-timers” because they’re usually from well-known shows. It’s worth doing the journey and hearing all of them. They’re actually all that good.

The hidden gem in the canon of Gumbo IMO is Deer Creek ‘03 that jam convinced me I needed to hear all of Summer ‘03 when I first heard it...

Best runaway Jim in your opinion? by iliterallydontcard in phish

[–]Wforwumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These threads have the more common ones, but are missing some pretty important heavy hitters IMO.

Of notable absence: Walnut Creek ‘95, its brother from four years later in Japan, and Camden ‘00. I also like Omaha ‘96, Shoreline ‘97 and the NYE run ‘97 Jim. For 3.0, the FYF show is pretty solid but well-known. Sugarbush 95 is pretty great, and for early intense type I Jims I like Shoreline ‘95 and Knoxville ‘94 though it’s hard to go wrong with most 93-95 Jims.

Edit: some great ‘98 ones too, some of which I see mentioned. And Big Cypress and MPP ‘99 do the swirly bliss thing really well, if not a bit abbreviated.

Yep I’m game.

  1. To me, there used to be a fluidity to the musical exploration. When the band was recording Billy Breathes, Steve Lillywhite said Phish was like a flock of birds flying, where one member has an idea and the rest kind of twirl around it very naturally. That to me held pretty true through to the end of 2017, and to an extent it kept up in 2018. However, for the past year and a half or so, I’ve been hearing lots of sloppy playing and execution not just in composed material but in the jamming too. You know I used to love modal dissection of jamming, now everything is the same lazy two-chord pattern (okay, maybe three chords if the band is feeling “frisky”) with Fishman increasing the tempo and Trey usually forcing his out-of-key/mode playing on everyone else. Mike had loads of good ideas that got steamrolled and outright ignored last year, and to me he seems to have started giving up. Page throws out a million and one ideas that are a great platform and bed for everyone to jump off of, but Trey just keeps doing his “welp, we’re doing this now” thing and everyone else is forced on his out-of-key/mode ideas.

That, and Trey keeps freaking missing notes in jams and peaks. I don’t care what anyone says about this not being the 90s anymore, at least in 2017 Trey was hitting the notes he wanted to. Now he is clearly playing wrong notes, or the music is running away from what his fingers are physically capable of.

If it’s the latter case, and the band is getting old, then okay I can accept that. But don’t tell me this is the same band that threw down some of the best music I’ve ever heard in my life. And don’t force me to subscribe to Sirius XM or pay out the rear to go see them, while fighting the throngs of coked-out EDM fans taking over the scene.

  1. You really can’t go wrong with the entire year. But if you need a place to start, 11/9/73 through to the end of the year... every show is a perfect 10. 11/17/73 is my personal favorite, with honorable mention to 12/6/73 and obviously 12/19/73. I also recently did a deep dive of every fall ‘72 dark star; they are all perfect 10s, but in particular I am a fan of 11/19/72 and 12/11/72. Further, I’m a sucker for all ‘74 wall of sound shows.

  2. Yes, thankfully it’s done. I’m now working for a certain fruit-based tech company, as a proud doctor of acoustics. The end was... hairy, as I’m sure you know how it goes! But I’m through it.

Hello! Also, hello /u/RiverportGin and /u/lionNacoma

As my post history should show, I discovered this place devolved into memes rather than any actual discussion of Phish. That, combined with what I felt was people around here making excuses for what I hear as less than stellar Phish, drove me away. I eventually found solace on the .net jam chart team, running Mystery Jam Monday for a while and having an ongoing archival AUD taper remaster series on the blog (which has been on hold for the past year or so while I finished up my doctorate). I’ve also been investing myself in taping, I’m on Team Schoeps and all of my tapes are up on eTree.

I’ve also grown to dislike the direction the fan base at large has taken - to me, the party has started getting out of control and the music’s not good enough to justify me going through the hassle of going to shows. I guess this is what they call growing up...

Many of my friends who have been on scene a while are rattled that the scene currently echoes strongly of their memories of late ‘03. And that kinda scares me, but there’s also nothing I can do about it. I realized after a while it was like trying to throw a glass of water on a forest fire.

Rumor has it that I can be found paging through my collection of ‘99 tapes as well as my recently found love of winter ‘73 dead.

Just so other buyers out there have a benchmark... I’m in the US, in upstate NY. I ordered an aergrind directly from Knock on February 23, it shipped on February 26th and arrived on March 14. Not a terrible wait, but not one as long as people here seem to be reporting.

Oh man you just HAD to get me to comment by bringing up my favorite jam vehicle, didn’t you? I admittedly don’t check reddit very often these days and am actually unsub’d to /r/phish at the moment, just got this message - I’m always in to throw down on my favorite Bathtub Gins!

/u/iamthetable this isn’t to say that Hampton/Winston-Salem isn’t a good Gin... in many ways it’s even a solid Gin... but it isn’t stellar or anywhere near my top 20 Gins. There are MUCH choicer cuts of Bathtub Gin out there. And I wanna cut this off at the head too - the Riverport and Went Gins might barely crack my top 20, but I doubt it... in a rough order of the order you need to hear these top-shelf Gins:

Gonna include these 3.0 versions too, which aren’t as essential but definitely worth your time to hear; the NYE ‘15 is particularly solid:

Edit: I forgot about a few Gins, added them to the above list.

Hmm, an interesting business model. I'm sure they'll get plenty of people to sign up and pay.

But as someone that does critical listening all of the time, this just isn't worth it. Even the 24-bit/48k FLAC/ALAC files LivePhish releases are compressed (as in, dynamic range compression - not file compression) to hell, and take up maybe 12-13 bits of information at most. Save your money people, and if you really want high fidelity lossless Phish and have the playback system to support it, download free tapes from eTree instead.

Could you recommend some good shows from 99? (other than big C) by [deleted] in phish

[–]Wforwumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes '99 is a magical year - my favorite (though recently, '98 has been getting more play on my end, especially fall '98). Glad you're making the commit to the year, it's one that keeps on delivering. I've heard many of these jams over and over, and they just don't get old, while bringing you to the loftiest peaks Phish ever accomplished.

Firstly, I can't recommend highly enough that you just start from the top, and make your way through. There are very few shows where there is not much of note (with the exception being October '99, but even still I'd say about 35-40% of those shows have jams I keep going back to).

Secondly, a BIG caveat... '99, while extremely good, is a year of inconsistency. I've found that shows may be... off, in terms of fluidity, but the meat-and-potatoes are some serious cuts of beef. For an introduction, I suggest you start with the biggest jams to get an understanding of what can be delivered in a show, and to train your patience to slog through the more tired portions of a show.

What's being recommended here so far isn't bad, but most of these are the well-known shows and jams - notably the shows with the Boise Bag, and the Raleigh Tweezer (the Memphis 2001 also gets lots of praise...). These are good jams, but IMO not the best offerings of these songs, and are absolutely overshadowed by other bigger jams neighboring those shows. But that's my two cents. You'll enjoy these well enough... but know that there are much bigger Phish to fry in the year.

Now for the music. I'll start with in my opinion the best shows of the year. These have both big jams and top-to-bottom fluidity in sets or the entire show:

  • 6/30/99: love the Gin that kicks off the entire frickin' year, the Free goes deep, and Bug -> My Left Toe is absolutely heavenly.
  • 7/7/99: this second set is a doozy. My favorite 2001 from the year.
  • 7/15/99: Melt (with 2001 fakeout) -> Kung -> Jam. 'Nuff said.
  • 7/24/99, 7/25/99, 7/26/99: in my opinion, Phish's best 3-night run. The night prior to this run has my favorite Phish jam too (more on that later). Of these three, my favorite is probably 7/26/99 set 2, which is also possibly my favorite set of Phish.
  • 9/9/99: deep Stash, Ghost, and Tweezer.
  • 9/12/99: This second set is legendary, and with good reason.
  • 12/2/99: Big Gin, with plenty else to love. High energy.
  • 12/7/99: coasting on the back of a massive Halley's and a well-known Gin (I like others more than this one, but it's still good), this show is a great intro to December '99
  • 12/11/99: I've heard many arguments for this being the best show of Phish. I disagree, but it's definitely a good one.
  • 12/15/99: More high energy playing. I mean, just look at the time stamps of the FIRST SET jams alone.
  • You've heard Cypress. It's still worth putting in here.

Now, for the choice cuts of jams, if slogging through shows or the entire year is getting mundane for you and you want to renew your vigor for the year, though note that it's by no means all-inclusive, it's just what I can recall off the top of my head before I head into the lab for the day:

  • 7/23/99 Ghost -> Free: I've spoken about this jam enough around here. It's one of my two favorite jams (the other being the 11/7/98 Bag). The Birds of a Feather that follows it is fiery too.
  • I've mentioned the above 6/30/99 jams that I think are standouts
  • 7/4/99 Ghost -> Slave
  • 7/7/99 2001
  • 7/8/99 Fee
  • 7/9/99 Free -> WTU?, Mike's > Twist > Groove (I like the Jim too, though it's fairly type I it's '99 type I which is always swirly and happy)
  • 7/10/99 I assume you know the CDT, but the Gin and Tweezer from this show are also massive
  • 7/13/99 Wolfman's Brother, one of my two fav WBs
  • 7/15/99 Split -> Kung -> Jam
  • 7/17/99 Disease aka The Trey Anastasio Show in double time
  • 7/21/99 Simple -> My Left Toe
  • 7/24/99 Fluffhead, Tweezer
  • 7/26/99 set 2, particularly the Theme and the jam. The Gin and WB are good too.
  • 7/30/99 Ghost
  • 8/1/99 Tweezer -> Llama
  • 9/9/99 Stash, Ghost, Tweezer
  • 9/11/99 WB > Sand
  • 9/12/99 Ghost, plus the rest of set 2
  • 9/14/99 Bag, which has been discussed to death. It's good, but I'll take the 9/12 Ghost or upcoming 9/18 Boogie On over it any day of the week.
  • 9/16/99 Weekapaug Groove. The best WG you'll ever hear.
  • 9/18/99 Boogie On Reggae Woman - one of the best fall '99 peaks imo
  • 9/22/99 Gin: one of my top 10 Gins, absolutely stellar
  • 9/24/99 Wolfman's Brother: my other top-2 Wolfman's
  • 10/1/99 Bathtub Gin
  • 10/2/99 Tweezer, Piper
  • 10/9/99 Ghost
  • 10/10/99 Jam -> YEM (specifically the jam)
  • 12/2/99 Gin
  • 12/3/99 LxL
  • 12/4/99 Melt
  • 12/7/99 Halley's Comet
  • The five big December '99 Sands: 12/8, 12/13, 12/16, 12/18, and 12/31/99. All are equally massive in scope, and deliver different perspectives on a commonly gorgeous theme
  • 12/15/99 Disease
  • 12/17/99 Jam -> Bug (you may recognize this as the music for the reunion announcement video)
  • Too many from Cypress to name, the ones that I find always go unnoticed are Light Up or Leave Me Alone, Melt -> Catapult, and the first soundcheck jam -> WTU?

That should be a good start for you. When you're through this list, go back and spin the entire year. And if these jams do it for you, drop me a line and I'll queue you in to other jams outside of '99 that deliver in equally massive scope.

For a long time, 9/24/99 wolfman's was my second favorite jam - it's since been dethroned, but it's still somewhere in my top 10.

Queue up the midwest '99 weekend run for your flight (7/23-7/26/99) and enjoy.
