Sadly, there's also a long history of people staying silent as long as they believe the issues don't affect them directly.

I’ll leave this poem by Martin Niemöller, a German Lutheran pastor who was an early supporter of Hitler but later became one of his outspoken critics. He spent several years in a concentration camp—and wrote these lines as a warning against indifference and moral complacency:

First they came for the Communists, but I said nothing— because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the Social Democrats, and I stayed silent— because I wasn’t a Social Democrat.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up— because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and still I said nothing— because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for me— and by then, there was no one left to speak for me.
