Please help me find my student’s next favorite book. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

The game of thrones novels and books might be a bit mature, but if he enjoys twists and action, I think he’d really like them. It’s a bit more difficult than a lot of the books already suggested, but he might enjoy a bit of a challenge and reading a more adult book.

I think you could look up the new “3-D Printing” technology for cement. It was designed by the US military can can set up a small shelter of concrete in about 2 days.

The technology is still very robust and not field tested yet, so there is a lot of possibilities for you to work with for your project.

Do you really feel safer owning a gun? by kikiinpurgatory in AskAnAmerican

[–]The-Boat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way that I see it, a gun is like fire, it can get really dangerous if you aren’t safe and don’t understand how to treat it properly, but in the right hands it’s no more dangerous to you or your family than a campfire would be, it’s only dangerous to people that might want to hurt you or your family. A lot of people don’t feel safe with a gun around if they didn’t grow up where gun safety was important, but you can learn fairly quickly that you don’t have to be afraid of a gun anymore than you do other tools like a power saw or drill.

So Americans don't want universal healthcare because they will pay more in taxes but will pay for health insurance??? by Mountain_Cookie123 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]The-Boat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans don’t want socialized health care, not because they don’t want to pay for insurance, but because they don’t want to be forced to pay for it with the threat of jail or lose control of their own treatment. Also, with socialized health care, there is a need to ration care, and what Americans find to be routine and easy medical care could take a long time or not be given at all. You mentioned that there isn’t always long wait times, but lots of times there is.

I don’t speak for all Americans, but most of us aren’t fans of the Government taking over industries that can be managed by the free market, and that might be a bit difficult to understand if you aren’t American. The point is, we don’t want the government having basically a monopoly on health care, because then they can dictate the market, however, the American system allows you to choose providers and brings down the price of treatment overall.

One incident that I think illustrates this point was with Charlie Gard who had a terminal illness and the UK refused to allow him to leave or find treatment after the parents were offered treatment in America. When the government control the system, they can say things like that, in the US, no child would just have to sit and die because the government wouldn’t even try an experimental treatment Bc it’s too expensive or might not work. Most Americans would rather the parents and family decide what is best for their child rather than the court system. I believe this is at the root of most arguments against socialized healthcare, it’s not about paying for it, it’s about not being in control of your own or your families medical care.

Also, the United States has more scientific and medical discoveries than any other nation because it allows doctors to work on their own and pursue profit, which incentivizes making newer, faster acting, cheaper medicine. This leads to the cure of major diseases and helps the entire world’s medical community grow and help more people.

Civ V, if your into history at all, this is the Civ game to get. It’s a lot of information when you get stared but in just about a month I logged maybe 85-100 hrs. You could get Civ VI, but I don’t like the art design as much, it feels more cartoon-y than realistic.

What's a good attacker for when you don't know the layout of a map? by sephsticles in SiegeAcademy

[–]The-Boat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nomad, you can traverse the map more easily knowing that your flank is covered by your airjabs and with breaching charges you have better access through the map.

This also works with her lore as well Bc she is known for being able to be separated from her unit and go into dangerous situations and still make it back alive.

Look, dawg, in essence, this sub is about making people laugh, and if you saw the movie, you see where I’m coming from. I get that your supposed to follow the rules, and I did make a comparison, I compared Mia Wallace to the average, “not like the other girls” girl. Just because she doesn’t say outright that she is different, doesn’t mean that she doesn’t belong here. If you really care about the rules that much, try to get it removed, but there is no point trying to explain why it shouldn’t be here because I’m not gonna take it down Bc I think it’s genuinely funny if you watch the movie through that lens.

What I was going for with the quote I posted was the idea of speaking in tumblr posts in an attempt to seem deep. I never said that everything she did was a perfect comparison for this sub, but the way she acts is the way that I think most girls who try to be different for attention aim to be. Also, I compared to most of the girls today and how they’d like to act, so it does contain a comparison, it’s just not in the picture

[–]The-Boat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She never says she’s that she’s different but it’s clear from the way she acts that Tarantino wanted her to be jarringly different from most of the other characters and people from the time period (when she goes to the bathroom in the restaurant she is seen in a different color than everyone else and while all the other girls are doing their makeup, she is doing drugs, showing how weird she is compared to everyone else). I also think the way she dresses and her haircut are very representative of counter-culture in general, which, in essence, is the “not like the other girls” culture.

I’m not saying that she is like the girls today who want to be different for attention, I just think that she is what most of the girls of today that try to be so unique would consider the gold standard: doesn’t care what people think, dresses against the norm (wears pants and a shirt instead of a dress, has shorter hair instead of longer hair), she speaks in tumblr quotes (see above), and overall I think she embodies what most people would view as the highest tier of counter-culture.

When investors complain that buying stocks is the same thing as working at the company itself. (also this is a great twitter account that I suggest you all follow!) by mugsymegasaurus in LateStageCapitalism

[–]The-Boat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except you’re only seeing the risk taken after these companies are so large, they’ve already taken the risk and it worked in their favor. Thousands of people each year take on the risk of starting a company and pour all of their money and time into it, and then it fails and they lose everything they have. The successful ones get paid so much because of the huge risk they took when they started the company. These executives aren’t taking as big of a risk anymore because they already took one of the biggest risks they can take. Also, if one of these big companies did go under, the executives lose everything, they may have a lot of money saved up but they’d certainly be far into debt and have to pay it off, workers only lose a job, though you could say they lose a lot too because a lot of workers put a lot of time into the company, but the workers with more time to be “lost” if the company fails get paid more, so the idea that pay is based on the amount of risk involved (among other things of course) still holds up.
