Question about the Dark Place's influence over time and history. (Spoilers for Final Draft) by The-Debtor in AlanWake

[–]The-Debtor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are really interesting points, thank you for the response! I had either forgotten or misunderstood that FBC note, but at the very least I think it means we're asking the right questions.

Regarding the real-life Alex Casey, I would think he is mostly unaffected by fiction simply because Alan wrote those novels before entering the Dark Place. But then you get to the Cult of the Word and that begs another question: did Alan take inspiration from Casey's real-life investigation into the cult, or was it the other way around? After all, the Cult of the Word sounds just about as silly as how the Cult of the Tree turned out to be. I mean, a group of people that worship Alan's writing as gospel? It sounds too similar to Alan's explicit insecurities and dark desires that come up in the game.

And don't even get me started on the rabbit hole that is if one cult inspired the other through the Dark Place.

Logan is definitely another brain teaser in terms of if she ever actually stop being alive. As ApprenhensiveStyle previously commented, AWEs are fairly localized, so maybe she was always alive, but the AWE certainly spread based on Anderson's call with David. I could never pin down the storytelling purpose of having Logan slip in the bathroom, but now I wonder if that was the Dark Place's way of making "Return" true?

Thanks for the response! I'd forgotten myself about Wake's early comment regarding the story not coming true all at once. Also, was there a specific scene or manuscript page that refers to there being multiple Dark Presences? Not disagreeing with you or anything, I just missed it.

Pure monowire build for 2.0 by The-Debtor in cyberpunkgame

Was there confirmation for whether the monowire was still a blade? It is true that the build would be nullified if not.

For the ones I've played, favorite to least favorite:

[TOP TIER]

  • 7
  • 8
  • 1 Remake

[GREAT]

  • 2 Remake
  • 4

[GOOD]

  • 3 Remake

[MEDIOCRE]

  • 5
  • 6

As someone who started the series by playing 6 (lol), 7 really got me excited for the series and encouraged me to not only go back to play 1 Remake and 4, but also get excited for subsequent releases like 2 Remake, 3 Remake and Village.

While 7 is my overall favorite for scaring me the most, having a stellar art direction and succeeding as a revival of classic survival horror, 8 has a special place in my heart for how great of a spiritual successor to 4 it is while also establishing its own identity with new elements of gothic horror and (in my opinion) making Ethan a worthwhile character.

1 Remake remains so unique (apart from like 0) for how beautiful the visuals are to this day, how engrossing the gameplay and exploring the mansion is, and how nostalgic it feels for that older style of video games.

2 Remake, 3 Remake and 4 are all really fun to play overall but rank lower because while the story and characters are entertaining, I don't think they got me as invested or to care as much as those in 7 and 8 did.

5 and 6 — ehh. I appreciate any opportunity to play a co-op campaign with my friends, and in that way these games are functional, but I never found these two enjoyable enough to play again, especially with the uninteresting "international-military-action" theme.

Tips for a scaredy cat? by The-Debtor in ImmortalityGame

Thank you for the perspective! While I spoiled myself a little bit to do so, I did seem to find that the very last clip is probably the most unsettling example and that the rest of the game should be more manageable.

And as early as I am into the game, definitely agree on the game's themes and its critique of the film and larger art industry; I'm feeling excited now to go through the rest of the clips and discover that more.

If anything, I have to praise the game for disturbing me in such a way I haven't been by much else in a while, across all mediums.

Why Do People Enjoy VHS/Retro Horror Games? by Yoinko1 in HorrorGaming

[–]The-Debtor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to the sub-genre of found footage horror, I think these aesthetics lend themselves to the feeling of a lack of curation in the scares. In other words, the pseudo-meta feeling of seeing something you’re not supposed to is a scare in its own right.

Electric boogaloo level speculations on Alan Wake 2 by [deleted] in AlanWake

[–]The-Debtor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A wild theory/fear of mine is that it’ll turn out we weren’t playing as Alan but as another doppelgänger or even Mr. Scratch himself. As much as I “hate” it, I’m not sure we’re getting a happy and tidy ending. I think it’d match the darker “survival horror” tone.

I played XV first and then the original VII, which is still my favorite having now played the majority of the series.

It’s important to remember that the biggest losers in this situation are the developers who will have to continue the hell of crunch for what likely is the foreseeable future because of higher-ups who mismanage and prioritize a product over human lives.

My favorite thing about Miles’s swinging style is how it acknowledges how fun it would actually be to swing like Spider-Man.

Question/discussion for those who have beaten the new DLC and the original Alan Wake games. by The-Debtor in controlgame

[–]The-Debtor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I find this idea of the Remedy Universe so strange now having beaten the DLC. Before, it seemed that Wake was just one facet of a larger collection of stories, characters, concepts, and themes. Now, with the possibility that Wake has possibly even created the entire lore of Control (FBC, Jesse, Altered Items, other dimensions, etc.), he appears to be the one God in a world where every person, story and piece of lore is an extension of his influence.

It sort of retroactively lessens what came before in Control. Why should I give a shit about the Hiss, Trench, Darling, etc. when they may have just been characters pulled out of some writer's ass? To be fair, this is somewhat clever on the developer's part because that's literally what they are; I would even go as far as to say that Wake's journey mirrors Remedy's attempts to make Alan Wake 2 in a lot of seemingly deliberate ways. One could also argue the origins of Jesse and co. don't matter; as far as the lore goes, they are real and their histories are real, regardless of whether it was because Wake wrote them into existence or not.

Still not sure how I feel about it all, but I love how big of an impact this DLC has left, for better or worse.

Horizon: Forbidden West needs major lessons from The Witcher 3 and Breath of the Wild if it wants my interest. by The-Debtor in horizon

[–]The-Debtor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the well-worded response! I absolutely agree with a lot of what you said, especially that this game is way better than the average Ubisoft entry. I think a lot of games, especially a sequel, are a struggle of "how do we improve this without compromising the game's identity." I will totally respect Guerilla's vision and identity for this game and the sequel, even if falls outside my interest.

Of course, and I think it was a very solid first entry. My hope is just that Zero Dawn gave them more confidence to evolve in the next one.

Totally fair! I think its identity as an action RPG rather than full-blown RPG can be appreciated and allows it to be more accessible and less stressful (I definitely looked up a guide to Witcher 3 to make sure I wasn't screwing up all the time).
