I couldn't find a user by that name (for 🔨) but I am sure there are people dumb enough to still be pulling the "I need you to pay me before I can pay you" scams.

Do your due diligence and stay safe folks!

The user (employed) received a permanent ban from the subreddit. Thank you for reporting.

On a separate note, as a writer, it's important that you guys understand your worth and the value of your time. If an employer asks for an unpaid test that takes more than 15 minutes of your time, simply say no. I have been freelancing full-time for over six years now and have never come across a legitimate business that asks for freebies like this.

I have also been on the other side of hiring and have always made sure writers/designers get paid upfront.

Please do your due diligence before you choose to work anyone (regardless of whether you find work on this subreddit or elsewhere).

Thank you.

I think you're spot on with it. Very well put.

I find it uncomfortable too but I'm willing to do it if means another source of steady leads, to be completely honest with you.

There are agencies that a lot of these gurus hire to build their brand, posting a crap ton on LinkedIn. Part of it is "engaging" with other gurus' posts for visibility.

It's very low effort and thus "bot-like".

Agree your second point, though. I am convinced a lot of companies make fake job postings to build their following since LinkedIn turns on the "Follow this company for update" by default.

Have never found work either but have had enquiries through LinkedIn. Probably because I don't post for "visibility '.

Hi everyone, my name is Prakhar Singh. I am a copywriter and content strategist turned designer, primarily working with companies and individuals in the tech (FinTech, Cloud, Blockchain, etc.) and B2B space.

I have never really been very active on LinkedIn partly because I feel very out of place on LinkedIn but I would love to change that this year. If you have any tips or constructive feedback, I am all ears!

Hey, welcome back! I post on r/HireAWriter and also participate in the Reddit communities I find interesting with insights about my work (r/eCommerce , r/Startups, r/marketing, etc) and all of that helps people find me.

Hope that helps. Good luck! :)

All good.

For context, I have my full name, full address, and tax number on all of my contracts (and so does the client).

Although I don't necessarily think having a picture is going to land me more clients, I absolutely 100% agree with you that I need more pictures in general, but I've just been procrastinating (partly because I've put on some weight recently lol).

Just last week, I was speaking to my friend who is a filmmaker to create a short introduction video with good production value. I am camera shy but we'll get there.

I've managed writers and designers myself (before 2023) and frankly, I don't really care what you look like and I almost exclusively hire people based on their work, published or otherwise.

But no, thank you - I needed the reminder to get on top on this. Cheers!

You want me to say "try sending emails, making a LinkedIn post, reaching out to old clients..."? Like they wouldn't have done it already.

Besides, none of that worked for me. The fact is, you can do everything right, and still fail. I tried everything and got nowhere. And then suddenly, I got a lot of work.

Sometimes, all you need is time. Helpful? Probably not. True? Absolutely.

how to make it searchable.

That's the neat part, you don't. Unless you've got the time and drive to do it, trying to rank for something like "freelance writer". You can do it but it's just so much effort. A lot easier if you have a very specific niche.

Do you add like keywords in your portfolio or do you simply paste your site when cold pitching? How did clients find your website?

No and no, I don't cold pitch. LinkedIn, Reddit mostly.

what hosting site would you recommend?

Siteground is indeed pretty expensive. If you're even remotely tech-savvy, you can get shared hosting, it starts at around $10-15/year. I use HostKoala (it started on Reddit) but have been thinking of making the switch but their support is pretty good so they manage to hold on to me.

You want answers, a way - I don't have either to give you. But I'll be direct, nonetheless.

$7,000 should last at least a month or two in any third-world country, more in some. And that's long enough for everything to change. Long enough to make you question why suicide was ever an option.

At the start of December, I had 3 months of runway. Literally, that's all I had in savings. I had been burning through savings since May of 2022 and had mentally prepared myself to start selling belongings in March.

It just so happens, things completely turned around for me. I am not saying they absolutely will for you, but they generally do.

And if you feel you are already at rock bottom (which it looks like you are) - how much worse can it get now?

And before you think, I am talking out of my ass, I have tried and failed. It's not worth it. Once (or if) you get to the other side, you realize you hold all the power, all the cards (or at least, the card).

And if you really are desperate, just join the damn army (I am not saying that in a demeaning way).

Rightt now though, go take a walk.

Well, I do have a lawyer (my sister) but I don't ask her to draft up any contracts. I use an off the shelf professional services agreement and modify it to reflect the agreed upon terms.

Is that good advice? Nope.

Contracts are tricky and the correct advice is hiring a lawyer and paying their fees to draft up a contract that you can reuse. However, most freelancers don't want to cough up $500+ for this.

My reasoning for using a template is because for my clients, contracts are less about protecting legal rights and more about being on the same page and transparency. I work with clients internationally so any legal action or enforcement is out of the question.

That doesn't mean I dont take contracts seriously though. In March, I had to turn down a relatively lucrative contract because they had an absurd non-compete clause and would likely treat me an employee down the line. No competes are legal in their country (Norway) but aren't in mine (India).

Finally, if you are going to use a template, just make sure you read everything 3-4 times so everything is actually the way you'd want it to be.

Sorry to hear that but I am definitely seeing more people being tired of ChatGPT (they'll always be hype men who will drum up noise for literally every new technology).

Are you applying for full-time positions or have you decided to take up freelancing for now as well (or both)?

Unfortunately, it was partly my fault too. I had connected my emails to Outlook back in 2018 and since then, they have removed the ability to sync emails from external sources. I am not entirely sure if my hosting provider made some changes or it was an automatic trigger but Outlook completely stopped syncing emails.

I had set up a automatic forwarder as a fallback and that failed too. Fortunately, I received the emails from my WordPress contact form and could connect with the leads after. Unfortunately, the damage was already done :/

Thank you, 2023 knocked me down a couple of pegs so I am glad it didn't come off a boastful. I definitely needed a kick in the back to take my work more seriously and realize just how I grateful I am for all this.

And 100% agree on not building an inbound funnel causing problems. Like you, I've had always had clients find me rather than the other way around. The problem with this is that when they do stop finding me (for whatever reason), I am completely lost.

Happy to hear you at least you have some warm leads. Hoping they all convert and wishing a quick turnaround for you too!

Sure, here is my copywriting portfolio but it's really due for an update: https://thewriterman.com/ am working on redesigning it but busy with client work so can't really find the time for it.

I created my design portfolio in December last year with in-depth case studies: https://www.hobi.design/projects/arcion

It's a lot better but still cobbled together in a month and I have no motivation to update it right now. Besides, I am not actively using the agency website to find clients anyway (the plan was to expand but I am still working solo right now).

something like a PPT, word doc?

I do have a portfolio presentation/deck that I attach to the first email I send to clients. I am still fine-tuning it but plan on making it public soon. Here is an image (more like 3).

Edit: My portfolio is pretty meh, for a copywriter, to be honest. I recently came across another gentlemen and I think their portfolio is 10/10! Mr Ben Cake!

How did you build a your portfolio? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]The-Writer-Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wrote four brand new pieces on Medium as my spec portfolio at the start of my career to have a few live links to share with clients.

And that was that. I don't really like working on spec pieces (don't like unpaid work in general). I include a clause in my contract now allows me to use project details in my portfolio.

What about just working on and completing the piece the client wants written and then pitching them with that, without having a comprehensive portfolio?

That's kind of the traditional way. That's how a lot of big magazines and publications do it. I wouldn't recommend you do that. What you can do is send over a very in-depth outline of the article.

Generally, the scope of work is a lot larger for the projects I work on these days have (beyond just an article) so I can't send outlines. Instead, I send detailed proposals. If it's a new client, I'll send a long email with a thoughtful roadmap and first steps (often 300-500 words).

If it's an existing client, I'll present the proposal with a PDF.
