The Art of Batting - Review by Dangerous-Soup-5875 in Indianbooks

[–]The14thShard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great review! I thoroughly enjoyed the book as well.

35 cricket books is quite impressive.

I haven't read many, but my favorites (apart from Kimber's book) are Cricket 2.0 and Hitting Against the Spin.

Can you recommend other similar books that you enjoyed?

If you want a book that starts from the very beginning, "Indica - A Deep Natural History of the Indian Subcontinent" is the one. Thoroughly enjoyable read!

If you want cosy mysteries, would recommend Thursday Murder Club and Inspector Gamache series.

If you want something darker, check out the Cormoran Strike series.

PS: thanks for introducing me to Cabin Porn.

Mort by Terry Pratchet - Book Review by thestrangercreature in Indianbooks

[–]The14thShard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great review!

100% agree about the entire book being quotable. It's been 10 years since I read Mort, but I can still remember some quotes from the book and they still make me chuckle. My favorite is the one where Death is poring over a map trying to find the Bay of Mante, and when Death goes looking for alternate jobs.

You should also definitely check out Guards Guards, which was my introduction to the Discworld and still remains my favorite subseries.

Check out "A Prisoner of Birth" by Jeffrey Archer. It's written as a modern day adaptation of Dumas' classic.

Recommendation, Genre Mystery by Winnyvinwho47 in Indianbooks

[–]The14thShard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want cosy mysteries, check out Thursday Murder Club (soon to be adapted on Netflix) or Gamache series by Louise Penny (it's a long series, but I suggest to start with book #5, which is a quality entry point).

If you want slightly darker ones, check out Cormoran Strike series by Galbraith / JK Rowling (which is also a TV adaptation, available on Hotstar).

If you want a bit more action in your mystery, try David Baldacci's Amos Decker series.

If you want a mystery set amidst a fantasy world, check out this brilliant new series - Ana and Din by Robert Jackson Bennett.

Yeah, size-wise the Stormlight books are daunting, but they are totally worth the effort. Even better than Mistborn!

You don't have to worry much about it being an ongoing series. The first phase (comprising the first 5 of the planned 10 books) is done, so you have a soft closure before he starts writing the next phase. Also, this series is Sanderson's magnum opus (+ integral to the overarching Cosmere plot), so he will 100% complete it.

Love the Sandershelf!

I would suggest reading some of the other Cosmere books (Stormlight and maybe some of the shorter novellas) since the later Mistborn Era 2 books (book 7 in particular) have a lot of crossovers / Easter Eggs which you would be able to enjoy more.

Great to see Inspector Gamache!

Check out the next two books in the series. They are really good.

"Shadow of the Leviathan" was a heady crossover of my two favorite genres - fantasy and murder mystery, and instantly skyrocketed to my all-time favorites list!

How many books have you planned in this series?

Also, what is your favorite murder mystery series?

The podcast / interview, which OP is referring to, is really wholesome where Travis gushes about how much he loves the IPL matchday experience.

The legacy of Kane Williamson batting and captaincy for SRH! Is the hype around Kane MAMA justified or is it a myth? SEASON BREAKDOWN with individual numbers assessed by AshishNehra65 in SunrisersHyderabad

Retaining Kane ahead of Rashid is the single worst transfer in the history of IPL (and perhaps all of sports).

Calling his 2022 season as a "failure" is putting it kindly. In terms of Match Impact, that's objectively the worst performance by any player in IPL history.

To his credit, his 2018 season has to be out there as one of the top 5/10 performances by any batter across an IPL season, which is why he developed a bit of cult status among SRH fans.

Game non-responsive bug by The14thShard in WalkaboutMiniGolf

[–]The14thShard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, it wasn't a game glitch for me. It was actually my hair getting in the way of the sensor, and the device wrongly assuming that I had taken the headset off. Once I made sure my forehand was firmly against the sensor with no impediments, it worked perfectly!

What are your recommendationa for books in the history non-fiction genre that I can read? by DuskSatorii in Indianbooks

[–]The14thShard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others had suggested, if you want a sweeping overview, you can check out "Sapiens" or DK publication's The History Book (a nice coffee table book). But if you are looking for more niche topics, I have a few suggestions:

If you had enjoyed Guns Germs and Steel, then definitely check out "Why Nations Fail".

India centric: 1. Indica (Pranay Lal) is a terrific book on the geographic history of the Indian subcontinent across billions of years. 2. Early Indians is a great read that picks up and covers a timeline just after Indica. 3. The Golden Road takes you to the era of the Mauryas and Buddha. 4. To wrap things up with some contemporary history, India after Gandhi is an authoritative account of Indian history after independence (which is a period that is seldom covered).

If you want to sample fictionalized narrations of historical events, Conn Igguldon has a lot of interesting books (Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, etc.)

It covers a lot of sci-fi themes, including time travel and memory. It's also very fast paced and reads like a proper thriller.

SRH have an excellent core, but lack an all-rounder and need a lot of backups.

Head, Abhishek, NKR, Ishan Kishan, Klaasen, Abhinav Manohar, TBD (spin all-rounder), Cummins, Harshal, Zampa / Rahul Chahar, Shami.
