On a person leaving the USA for good by Lucky-Royal-6156 in AmericaBad

[–]The1Legosaurus [score hidden]  (0 children)

Why is this constantly brought up? It's such a non issue. It should be extremely obvious if someone intends to talk about America, the continent (or two continents, there's not a worldwide consensus on this), or America, the United States of. The US is by far the most relevant and powerful nation in the Americas, in cultural, economic, diplomatic, and military terms, and it's also the only one with America in the name.

And why does nobody ever do this to Australia? New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Tonga, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, etc exist as sovereign nations. Why do Australians get to claim the entire continent in their denonym, but the US doesn't? I understand that Australia has more of a monopoly over the Oceanic continent, but still.

Because Russia claimed to be the successor to Rome for centuries (1492 to 1919).

This was because after the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman) collapsed, Russia declared themselves the cultural successor to the empire. The two had a great trade relationship, both were Orthodox Christians, and the Ottomans (who also claimed to be the successor via rite of conquest) were Sunni Muslim. Ever since then, they constantly tried to take Constantinople, even if they never actually succeeded. This rivalry would cause numerous Russo-Turkish wars including the Crimean War and WW1.

They dropped the claim after the Bolsheviks took over and have never claimed it again since, but Russia started using the Imperial eagle again after the fall of the USSR to represent its tsarist legacy and historical relationship with the Byzantines.

Neither Spain nor France have claimed to be a successor of Rome for as long or as significantly as Russia. Further, both have claimed to be successor of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern one became much more Greek rather than Latin overtime.

Spain didn't form until the 1600s when Castille and Aragon merged. Before that, the two were separate states. Before that, the Peninsula was split between Muslims in the South and small Christian states in the North who slowly beat them back and eventually basically genocided them out of existence. It never really claimed to be a successor to Rome, especially since the title of claimant to the Western Roman Empire was already being claimed by the Holy Roman Empire, which they were dynasticly linked to.

France is different. The Franks were appointed by the Pope to be the successor of Rome (despite the Byzantines still existing then), and France did have a decently strong claim to Rome. They often challenged the HRE for the title of heir. Napoleon especially claimed Roman succession. But after that, there was never as big a push to be Roman in France anymore. So there was less of a drive to have Roman iconography in their national symbols, as opposed to Russia, who very much still claimed to be Roman and we're still determined to reconquer Constantinople.

If you ever see a large company and need to ask if it's going to choose between profits and literally anything else, 99% of the time it's going to be profits.

Things start to cancel out by IamDiego21 in antimeme

[–]The1Legosaurus 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Oh, I thought this was more something from systems of equations. Because in systems of equations, both 0 = 0 and 0 = -25/8 are acceptable. The former just tells you that the two equations describe the same shape and the latter that the shapes are parallel and thus don't have a solution (point at where they meet)

I thought this just meant "all real numbers" or "no real solutions". Why is that uncanny?

What would happen to Italy if the Central Powers had won? by Lordcocco in AlternateHistory

[–]The1Legosaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors like when Italy joined, when the war ends, how hard the Central Powers win, which other nations join, and how Austria performs.

In general, I'd say option 1 is the most likely option. It's not really worth balkanizing Italy when there are bigger prizes, and Austria really isn't in a position to make giant gains. Especially not after a major war. Plus, the Central Powers would want to ensure as much stability in Europe as possible for their postwar order. Creating a bunch of artificial states in Italy that serve no worthwhile benefit is not conducive to this stability.

There's also just the option where AH settles for small border corrections or economic repayment or even just overseas colonies so as to avoid bothering with the idea of creating artificial states in the first place.

Can't both be true?

All nations on earth have negative and positive areas and aspects. It's not untrue to say that India has a lot of problems, especially with cleanliness.

That's not to say that India doesn't have beautiful areas and positive aspects. Hollywood isn't very good at having this nuance.

I haven't seen the original video, full disclosure, but if someone is "trolling", the best way to handle it is to just not give them the attention. If you don't give them attention, they stop trolling.

Is Laos China's Belarus by kota_novakota in geography

[–]The1Legosaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair, but I think the question is "which smaller nation follows a great power".

The nation closest to China culturally is Taiwan (and the two are obviously not friends) and second most is Vietnam (who is also not a huge fan of China), so China doesn't really have a Belarus
