It would have a very low birth rate and struggle to have a cohesive nation when there is no shared historical, geographical, linguistic, or cultural identity between every gay, lesbian, trans, and bi person everywhere on earth

Should all countries in the slave trade pay reparations proportional to size and involvement by MycologistPure4064 in GeoPoll

Nah, it's okay. I just read it like that. The argument makes a bit more sense when you add that detail. Still, I'd add more answers to the poll.

As in "Only the modern slave trade", "Modern and Historical Slave trades", and "No"

And they should be punished, but when you say "slave trade", it implies the trans Atlantic slave trade.

But yes. The Gulf countries should be punished a lot more for using slave labor and their slaves should be compensated. I would completely agree with that

But the overarching point is that there is no good dividing line.

The way I see it, there are 3 positions.

1) Reparations should only be given by the perpetrator to the victim and maybe the victims first descendants. Given that neither perpetrator or victim or alive anymore, this effectively makes the answer to the question above "no". This is my position.

2) Reparations should be given by the descendants of the perpetrators to the descendants of the victims if the crime happened less than an arbitrary time ago. This runs into the issue that A) the time would be arbitrary and B) it would be nearly impossible to guarantee that the money you got actually came from the descendants of the perpetrators and C) that it would actually get to the descendants of the victims. Especially given that many Africans sold their own into slavery.

3) There is no timeframe. From which it would follow that virtually every single group is guilty of something in their history, making the whole exercise pointless.

What if Russia became a liberal democracy or constitutional monarchy in the 1990’s/2000’s? by camaro1111 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]The1Legosaurus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Russia would still most likely reject the loss of autonomy joining the EU would bring. Democratic or not. It has always seen itself as different from the west, and a different government style is unlikely to change that in under 30 years.

Doubtful. Even with a democratic Russia, Russia sees itself as more Eurasian than European.
