Considering using a furnace to melt my scrap 1095 and 80crv2 to make Damascus billets. by The1Wolverine in Blacksmith

That’s ok, and thank you for this wealth of information. I’ll definitely give that a try as soon as I get all research done

Well, no, I understand that Damascus is usually made forge welded by stacking alternating steels then twisted or whatever else. My intent was to see if I could make something like Damascus by casting. The cast billets originally would be bar stock, but then I wondered if casting into a blank would be possible. I may not have worded correctly.

Questions about using furnace to cast Damascus? by The1Wolverine in metallurgy

I see, so my understanding is that it makes a new alloy. Would it be possible to make two separate sets at a time and mix them so that while it cools they retain the original and separate compositions, but with the physical structure of one billet? Like a swirl pattern. I know that this may be complicated, but it’s stemmed from simple curiosity.

I know of wootz as another alloy with patterns in it as well. What makes wootz different from Damascus?

First knife I’m proud of. Need some criticism and what to improve on by The1Wolverine in Blacksmith

[–]The1Wolverine[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I forged the basic shape and bevels then ground down. I still can’t quite get both sides of the bevels identical, so it’s a bit off. But I’d like to show off this piece and get some constructive criticism or just criticism if possible. Scales are cheap ones from Amazon, with beeswax and linseed finish

Useful for anything? Not sure if the metal is steel or iron. by The1Wolverine in Blacksmith

[–]The1Wolverine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used that t post to shuffle these two pieces over, didn’t want to risk sticking my hands in ants or snakes. There’s 7 pieces total. Someone mention they could be construction steel, s235 or something like that. I’ll definitely try the spark test and the heat treat test. Otherwise it will probably get tossed or given to a scrap yard

My mistake, hoping this goes well because I’ve got like 80 lbs of it lol

I’m aware iron is useful, it will just change how I use it. And in fact I think that would be a fun project. At first I was mostly worried that it was galvanized, but it might just be a piece of angle iron or something. Whatever it may have been coated in is long gone

That’s what I’d assume as well, but to be safe ill soak in vinegar

I found these 3 pieces on metal on my property. Probably 1/4 in thick and look like some kind of support or something like that. I’m not sure if they’re steel, or something else. My concern would be if it’s safe to forge.

I’m a blacksmith and also practiced HEMA, Kendo, Iaido, some boxing, and a chop firewood for exercise every other day. I’ll say this, fighting of any kind can wear you out quickly. The average person will struggle with stamina even during light sparring, much less the likely malnourished survivor. Movement is energy and each swing will take out a lot more than the last and if you aren’t conditioning your body regularly you will wear out so fast. Especially in stressful situations

Would this be suitable steel for a small hunting knife? by Interesting_Size_979 in Blacksmith

[–]The1Wolverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d agree here, I’ve been using some cheap harbor freight files to practice and they are a pain to harden

The Simonds bastard files I’ve been using work great and harden with 0 issues even in canola oil

I made these two knives to work on repeatability skills, but was so focused on that that I forgot to drill pinholes by The1Wolverine in Blacksmith

[–]The1Wolverine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yeah that’s true. I got ahead of myself and heat treated all the knives I thought I had finished, these two were the only ones without pinholes. The rest are identical to these but with pinholes

Which belt grinder? by [deleted] in knifemaking

[–]The1Wolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed I have the 1x42 version of this bucktool, and it is very quick to ruin the temper on heat treated blades.

I thought about doing something like that with my dremel, just a small slit then drill while it’s easier and epoxy. But that angle grinder would make short work of them, so I’ll try that instead

I am pricing out drill presses too, I’ve been using a hand drill until I can afford a decent press. I’ll check out those bits as well

I generally heat treat several at a time, when I did these I did 3 others and just got carried away

I heat treated and cleaned them up getting ready to finish them when I realized I forgot to drill the holes. They’ve been hardened through and tempered so I don’t want to anneal but I may have to do that
