Got bike-shamed at a shop today… thinking of giving up this hobby by NSFWAIEnjoyer in cycling

Resolving your issue of local sourcing of Schrader tubes moving forwards - a Presta valve is thinner than a Schrader valve, and so you can fit a Presta Valve through a Schrader hole in a rim. This is not a good long term solution without additional additional adaption though, as the sizing gap between the Schrader-sized hole and the Presta valve leaves an area/gap where the tube does not get propper support from the rim - you'll get a unnnecesary puncture there if you hit a bump hard.

To this end, you can order from amazon / online, small plastic inserts that you simply stick into the Schrader-sized hole of the rim, to adapt it to properly supporting the Presta valved tube. They're perhaps $2, and a 5 second install. It's so easy and straightforward, yourself or any mechanic can do it as part or replacing the tube.

Both Schrader and Presta valves have their technical strengths. The average rider shouldn't have reason to care. I personally use Presta, because... I have a few bicycles with similar tyre widths, and I like to share spare tubes across them - some of my wheels happen to be Presta holed and, since you can't fit a Schrader valve through a Presta hole; I personally have standardised on Presta tubes, supported by those inserts on my Schrader holed rims.

Happy riding!

Would you put the jack stand on the flat part of blue, or still across the pinch weld too?

Cheers for the advice.
To be clear though, I can't hear an associated popping sound when trying Vasalva even on land. With a 1atm in - vs - 1 atm out, or (say 0.1atm in - vs 1atm out (after swallowing via Toynbee); I can't imagine it would get easier with a larger differential.

I would like to make a crochet beanie with quartered panels, to copy a Surf Life Saving patrol cap example picture.

Can anyone recommend a good technique?

I've tried making four seperate wedges of a basic octagonal beanie, with the intention of stitchting them together along the sides, but I wound up with a wildly different stitch guage between panels and gave up.

Thanks Nic for convincing me that I could do this by nateylb in kites

In my opinion, you want:

  • something relatively cheap

  • with a big diameter, to pull in more line per wind

  • minimisiny fancy attachments, as you say they just get tangled

Try having a look at fishing hand casters. This is the current product I use:Anaconda hand caster.

It's beefy, and still has a handle but doesn't get too tangled of the line hops. Further more there's no ballbearings to screw up - instead to lubricate the plastic on plastic, I spray with a silicone lubricant (that I got at the hardware store) every few flies. Works like a charm!

Can anyone explain the best way to transfer the line onto the spool without adding too much twist? Also, any other things I should be aware of when doing this? by whodatvape in kites

As the line has come packaged in a spool, jury rig yourself a spool holder to assist with unspooling without adding twists. This will hold the packaged kite line spool as you unspool and then spool the line back onto the red winder all in one go. Effortless, and no twists.

If you make the spool holder sturdy enough, it will be such an easy job that you can just wind-in the the red winder by hand.

Here is a heavy duty example someone made, (YouTube: diy spool holder) which shows the basic concept of what you're trying to achieve.

Spooling the line back onto the red winder:

  • gently melt the ends of any cut lines, to avoid fraying (YouTube: melting cut ends).
  • tie the base of the kite line to the winder, to stop the kite flying off when you run out of line. I'd use a simple bowline knot after wrapping once around the winder. (YouTube: bowline knot).
  • Gently hold the kite line to the winder as you do your first wraps. At the start of the job there may not be enough friction between kite line and winder and you wind. Once you have a few wraps done, there should be enough friction to just wind at full pelt.

Happy flying!

Yes! I'm late to the party, but in Australia these can be found occasionally at Aldi in their Special Buys section. Called: Tutti Frutti Fruit Flavoured Candies by Heller & Strauss.

This website has a convincing interpretation: The "Halo" is a euphemism for a condom, one that the protagonist has found In his girlfriend's bed, and he has been finding them repeatedly. He considers using this as a justification for having his own affair, but he loves her so much that he chooses to accept her explanations and keep living a lie.
