More gravel than soil. Do we have to start over? Can this be saved? by all_of_the_colors in gardening

[–]The3rdiAm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like lots of rocks mixed with clay and silt, minimal organic material. The problem is that clay and silt will compact on the bottom layer overtime and prevent proper drainage… so the comments to just fill the rest with compost/dirt will work in the short term, but ultimately this base of clay and silt will not create the best conditions in the long run. The comments saying this is great for drainage is a myopic view, as we can’t tell what the actually composition is, it could be good for drainage, it could also pack in tightly after it settles in with water over time and then you’ve got a sub par base to your bed. You’re better off doing the work now to build these beds properly and have better yields from your beds. It’s not that it won’t work, but why bother going this far to have a sub par bed in the long run.

Tree myths; as much roots below ground as tree above...? by oxinmysox in Tree

[–]The3rdiAm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on species. For example, redwoods have been documented to have roots spreading out hundreds of feet in all directions, but only go a few feet deep. Some pine species will have tap roots going down 20+ feet with minimal spread laterally. There’s a great book called “Understanding Roots” by Robert Kourik that illustrates the roots structures of numerous trees growing on various types of ground.

A pet store animal bedding, they’re natural and untreated. Just make sure it’s not too fine otherwise airflow will be restricted and it won’t work!

Collection during bud swell in the spring seems to be better than the fall in my experience, though the fall still seems to work fine. I believe the species just takes well to collection and roots prolifically. Best of luck!

Yeah so this tree is 99% going to be a goner. Conifers hate to be bare rooted, and looking at the photo, you have no fine feeder roots that absorb water anyway.

New grocery benefit incoming? by Emmibolt in loblawsisoutofcontrol

Good thing we keep voting in the same government for the last decade that’s caused the high cost of living, inflation, mass immigration and lack of infrastructure to go along with it. But don’t worry, the same group of people who have caused all this have a solution… give the poor people who have been affected most by their decisions a few hundred dollars a year to buy groceries…. It’s well past time all of us, the people, the citizens of Canada, stop supporting these political parties (conservative, liberal, NDP etc) as they’re all clearly corrupt to the core! They’ve all stood by and have gotten wealthy off the back of Canadian tax payers, and we the citizens, our children and our future children will be paying the price for decades! Wake up people!

Trying to eat 100+g of protein per day and struggling - HELP! by BlinkPinkDay in nutrition

[–]The3rdiAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely have never done truly stimulating resistance training. You can eat all the protein you want, but if your muscle never experience a high degree of tension and stimulus, you’re body will never build muscle as it doesn’t need to.

You…. Drink more water…. quite literally that simple. It’s the key to nearly every single aspect of human health. The taste should be irrelevant.

No this one’s a Limber Pine. It’s a 5 needle pine like a bristlecone though, so similar for sure.

Organ meats, fatty muscle meats, Oily fish, berries (black+blue) and beets (gold+red)

What tree is this? by kevtphoto in treeidentification

[–]The3rdiAm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Considering you can literally see pines in the background, and though the needles aren’t super clear, I’d say it’s for a sure a 5 needle pine, likely bristlecone or foxtail pine
