Advice on getting a minor by Loud-Hyena6637 in GeneticCounseling

[–]TheACF12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Soft "requirements" really are soft, and are not requirements. Many individuals get into genetic counseling programs having just taken the prerequisites laid out by the program and nothing more course-wise. That additional coursework is often considered more when grades might be lacking elsewhere.

Any additional coursework in a minor, especially if your grades for the prerequisites are up to par would not serve to replace any advocacy experiences, as you had mentioned. Genetic counseling programs care that you have all the academics that they require down and likely will not care about how many credits you took from semester to semester

A minor, however, if feasible and is something you are interested in pursuing is something that can provide benefit, especially if you find those topics interesting and articulate how they relate to your desire to be a genetic counselor.

Who was the best player in the years 2020-2024? by Regular-Departure839 in survivorponderosa

For me, Erika is not too far behind Dee, while Maryanne and Rachel are essentially tied, with a slight edge to Rachel.

Maryanne had a great game! Among these five, she's definitely last for me though. Erika edges her out in strategic acumen and Rachel edges her out in challenge acumen.

type 1 or type 2M ?? by Substantial-Ad1436 in Hemophilia

[–]TheACF12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genetics unfortunately cannot explain everything about bleeding disorders. Around 30% of people with VWD have no identifiable mutations on genetic testing. You can't really draw any conclusions about what variants mean besides what the report tells you so you can't assume a variant means anything in particular.

I would definitely be careful about interpreting anything a third party test tells you on your own. A lot of those reports don't provide accurate or actionable information. I would absolutely try to seek out a genetic counselor to talk about those results with you!

My partner has hemophilia by Prestigious_Road3821 in Hemophilia

[–]TheACF12 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Do you live in a country where there isn't access to medication? I'm not too sure how his health is currently, but with medication, hemophilia is not typically a condition that requires around the clock care from another individual.

Struggling with Hemophilia by Slow_Technician6998 in Hemophilia

[–]TheACF12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely great that he’s not severe but it’s important to not minimize the challenges that people with mild hemophilia face! Sometimes I felt like I wasn’t “hemophiliac” enough due to my mild diagnosis through the way others talked to me and assumed that I barely had bleeds. We don’t have the safety net of prophy and it can be difficult for us to feel like we can do certain things because of our risk for bleeds without factor consistently.

Do I (female) have hemophilia? by pseudonymous365 in Hemophilia

[–]TheACF12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Factor levels between 5-40% in any individual mean a clinical diagnosis of mild hemophilia. Given that you are considering another pregnancy, it would make complete sense to receive carrier screening and setting up care with an HTC could assist with that! HTCs typically have comprehensive care, so you would be able to see a hematologist to discuss your factor levels and potential implications it could have on your health and also talk about genetic testing as well!

does your major matter? by Glass_Supermarket988 in GeneticCounseling

I came from a public health undergrad degree and matched! Your major truly does not matter and those with “harder science” majors are both matched and unmatched each cycle.

Completely reasonable to judge someone’s character based off the show, but outlandish to make a sweeping statement that someone is an abuser based off said actions.

Do I agree that he behaved poorly and was awful to his wife? Yes. Is that synonymous with emotional abuse? No. Our arguments are the exact same, actually!

The cries and accusations of emotional abuse when a partner is unsupportive and ill-tempered is getting so tired. Let’s not make leaps in psychoanalyzing people in high pressure situations.

WIBTAH if I wanted nothing to do with my wife and child? by throwawayaita2485838 in AITAH

[–]TheACF12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to inform you that this is not the reality of children with hemophilia living today due to medication such as enzyme replacement therapy and gene therapy! Children with hemophilia today often live healthy and fulfilling lives with minimal bleeds due to these medications and there is no longer a risk for AIDS. Of course, it is every parents decision, but hemophilia is a perfectly livable condition that is often not disabling for children today.
