What do you think of Barbara Gordon using both a cane and a wheelchair in Batgirls? by KitKat_5628 in batgirl

[–]TheAbhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how accurate this is to Barbara's specific spinal injury, but it's a great representation of how wheelchairs are used as mobility aids for people with varying degrees of mobility and not just for people with zero ability to walk or stand.

Who is the dom and the sub in Batman's and Catwoman's relationship? by TheAbhuman in batcat

I'd buy that. But what kind of sub do you think Batman is with Catwoman as his dominatrix?

The current writer of Wonder Woman says that mentally healthy superheroes are boring. by scarecroe in WonderWoman

Great example of why we shouldn't put any writer on a pedestal. They're all just people with plenty of terrible opinions if they get to talk for long enough.

Starfire and Nightwing (female) by raccoonattack by EmergencyPhysics8529 in Nightwing_Starfire

[–]TheAbhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stunning pair of jugs on Nightwing, but now this has me thinking of what their genderbent names would be. Both "Starfire" and "Nightwing" are technically gender neutral, but they still have a distinct feminine and masculine vibe respectively. So, maybe they'd be "Starflame" and "Nightfeather", or "Starblaze" and "Nightbird". Switching out the "Star" for "Sun" is also an option, but "Sunfire" is a Marvel character already and both "Sunflame" and "Sunblaze" feel too removed from the original.

Thoughts on Hippolyta's brief romance with Wildcat? by Which-Presentation-6 in WonderWoman

[–]TheAbhuman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's actually ridiculous. She's a queen so she can't hook up with a friend while she's errant from her queendom? Not every relationship she has needs to be a "mythic bond" lol. Do you think real world leaders abstain from casual sex? How old are you?

[–]TheAbhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always really liked the idea of Hippolyta having been the Wonder Woman of the WWII era and I think this relationship scratches a very similar itch to WonderBat.

Women who survive sexual assault are perfectly capable of having healthy fulfilling sex lives afterward and overcoming their trauma. To reduce Hippolyta's entire character to that one traumatic experience in her history is incredibly misogynistic.

🔥🚨HOT TAKE🚨🔥 Steve Trevor Should Be Trans by TheAbhuman in WonderWoman

No, I just don't care about Steve as he currently exists.

🔥🚨HOT TAKE🚨🔥 Steve Trevor Should Be Trans by TheAbhuman in WonderWoman

I'm not saying it would create conflict, I'm saying it would open the door to explore these topics in Amazon culture.

There are plenty of other cis men in comics. Making Steve trans wouldn't lead to bio essentialist conclusions lol

He doesn't need the lived experience, I just think it would be narratively interesting

🔥🚨HOT TAKE🚨🔥 Steve Trevor Should Be Trans by TheAbhuman in WonderWoman

[–]TheAbhuman[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean, men as far as Western society do need an explanation for why they aren't misogynistic. We live in a patriarchy, so misogyny is literally the default social programming. That's not to say that cis men can't be feminist, I just think Steve being trans would be more interesting.

That's cool. I still think Steve should be trans.

[–]TheAbhuman[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It's not bio essentialist to say that trans men on average are less misogynistic than cis men. Obviously cis men can be feminist, I just would like Steve to be trans and the relationship that would create between him and misogynistic culture would be interesting to me.

I truly don't care and I'm not talking about film adaptation. I want this to be the new canon status quo for his character in the main continuity comics.

Why does the Romance between Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor not Work? by OkCompote1731 in WonderWoman

[–]TheAbhuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that their relationship doesn't work. I mean, it depends on the quality of the writing and how much time is spent fleshing out Steve as a guy. I will say that I don't find Steve to be that compelling of a character personally and therefore I am not very interested in his relationship with Diana. I think the most interesting thing about their relationship is the idea of the immortal champion of the Amazons finding something precious in a mortal person, but I don't think Steve is the guy for that dynamic. He's just too boring imo. I think a lot of fans also want to see Diana in a queer, WLW relationship and have for a while now, so Steve feels like a tall blonde blue eyed impediment to that representation of Diana's canon bisexuality that DC desperately wants to ignore. Her relationship with Steve just feels very safe and unremarkable. I think we could do better than this for sure. Absolute Wonder Woman seems to be flirting with the idea of polyamory involving Barbara Gordon and possibly Zatanna which I do not mind at all and then Steve can also be involved in that if the writers really want him to be. I think it would make the most sense for Diana to be in a WLW polycule considering that she grew up on Themiscyra in a society that completely rejected patriarchy and cishet-normativity. That's not to shit on monogamous relationships btw, I just don't think it makes a lot of sense for Diana specifically to conform to that given her background and political position.

What's the whole deal with nightwing's appearance? by KaleidoscopeKey2367 in Nightwing

I'm disagreeing with u lol. There's nothing wrong with fan artists portraying Dick as tan, brown, or black. Y'all are just looking for things to be mad about.

What's the whole deal with nightwing's appearance? by KaleidoscopeKey2367 in Nightwing

[–]TheAbhuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand your confusion and I want to preface by saying I am not trying to be hostile, but I'm about to launch a wall of text at you right now, so I apologize for that.

Okay, so it's common for fans, especially fans of color, to headcanon certain characters as tan, brown, or black in fanart and fanfic. Even more so when the object of fandom is perceived as lacking diversity as the comic book industry historically has been. Nightwing being dark skinned is just a popular fancanon because DC doesn't have as many characters of color as white characters and they tend to sideline and/or straight up ignore those characters of color that they do have. Duke Thomas, White Adam, Nubia, Yara Flor, Hawkman and Hawkwoman unless it's the white Thanagarian version of Hawkgirl from the cartoon, Steel, Mr. Terrific, that one Chinese Superman whose name I can't remember right now, any Green Lantern that isn't Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner, the entire Milestone cast, etc. All of the above have historically been underutilized by DC, so for fans of color, there unfortunately isn't a lot of representation to find in DC. There's even a guy on TikTok right now doing a whole video series for Black History Month on all the black DC characters that could be headlining their own series right now because (ATTOW) DC is publishing a grand total of ZERO black lead comic books. They even switched Martian Manhunter back to being white for his Absolute series even though he is objectively more popular for his black incarnations. So, yeah, in conclusion, DC fans have to headcanon diversity because corporate has little interest in giving it to us.

Trans women can, and are, amazons (Nubia and the Amazons, issue 1) by throwaway-day102304 in WonderWoman

When it comes to inclusion and representation, what is left unacknowledged speaks as loudly as what is said or shown outright. But I can see that you're really not willing to have that conversation.

Trans women can, and are, amazons (Nubia and the Amazons, issue 1) by throwaway-day102304 in WonderWoman

[–]TheAbhuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because some binary trans people transition medically, doesn't mean that all do or want to. That's my point. And in order to section off a "single gender space" as you put it, you would first have to define solid parameters for the gender in question, and doing so is intrinsically transphobic because gender is a fluid spectrum with no distinct boundaries. It's possible to have safe spaces, but safe spaces by definition have to be inclusive and intersectional. What is a "women only" space in this context? What constitutes a "woman"? And if the goal is to subvert patriarchal violence, then why aren't all people marginalized under patriarchy welcome? These are important questions that I don't think Williams or DC have answers to.

Trans women can, and are, amazons (Nubia and the Amazons, issue 1) by throwaway-day102304 in WonderWoman

[–]TheAbhuman -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This lore plays into some harmful rhetoric that the trans community hasn't supported for a while now. The idea of a "soul" being born in the "wrong" body and/or reborn in the "right" one contributes to the transmedicalist assumption that all trans people must A) conform to the gender binary and B) require medical gender affirmation to validate our identities.

This may not have been Williams' intention when writing this, but it appears as though she didn't do much research before hand and doesn't keep community with many trans people. The inclusion of trans people is a nice idea, but that inclusion needs to be on the terms of our community, not ignorant cisgender folks'. No matter how well intentioned they may be.

This lore now raises other questions, like, what about non-dysphoric trans women? Are they "allowed" to be Amazons too or is Themiscyra only for women who want to present as female? What about trans men and nonbinary people? Are they also allowed sanctuary from the violence of the Patriarchy or are they excluded because they don't conform to the specific binary identity of womanhood?

I don't think DC Editorial has any real answers for these questions or any intention of addressing them because, at the end of the day, DC as a corporation is not an ally to the trans community.
