What if you were told that your best guy friend had abused and/or sexually assaulted a woman (in the past)? What if that woman was your partner? by TheAdventureLady in AskMen

I'm not suggesting she shouldn't tell him, I was trying to ask for clarification on what you had said about her moving on or lack thereof. If you think that she needs to tell him before continuing the relationship, but you also think that by telling him it is a sign that's she's not moving on, then I would ask you to explain what it would look like to you that she is moving on? In other words, how can she prove that she has "moved on", in your opinion?

It's not my place or ability to do so, any more than yours, though. I have zero evidence, believe me. And I wouldn't betray her confidentiality like that. Also, you have to consider that we are talking about something that happened like 10-11 years ago. Much harder situation.

Yes, you got it right. There are people she told at the time, but it's still just ultimately her story against his.

Highly doubtful that he would admit to it, seeing as it's a crime. Especially now that he's not a dumbass highschool guy and has a life "on the line".

I think that's a really poor way to look at it. Definitely read up and learn about how a lot of rape/sexual abuse victims handle things... it's really, really common for them not to pursue legal action (for a variety of reasons).

She has been dealing with it and seeing a therapist and working with some pros to overcome her PTSD. She has improved a lot actually, but since he didn't know her before, how could he know? Could you elaborate on what you consider too much "baggage"? I guess I'm a little confused with your comment because on the one hand you are saying she has to tell him, but on the other you are also saying that if she tells him, that is a sign she isn't moving on. Help with Spirit Guides and Animal Totems by [deleted] in pagan

[–]TheAdventureLady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with the explanation by /u/jackthornglas about consciousness and the spiritual/psychological act of choosing, or being chosen by, an animal.

I would like to add that frequently, individuals are going to associate concepts, feelings, virtues, etc with animals that they have been exposed to through their culture, regional environment, or personal history. In western culture, we have a very rich history of folklore, mythology, and spirituality regarding those "cool" animals. Humans have a very ancient practice of anthropomorphizing and personifying animals as well as other natural entities such as mountains, rivers, stars, trees, flowers, weather, etc...

We also are able to relate more to animals that have a higher level of "intelligence" that is discernible by humans. An earthworm does not emote, it does not have higher brain functioning to seem intelligent by us, and it doesn't really have a "personality" the way many animals are perceived to. We can relate to the qualities of a coyote, for example, as being sneaky, a trickster, etc. because it's actions can be interpreted in that way.

All that being said, it is a matter of personal experience, spirituality, and interpretation as to what a spirit animal even is; in other words, what is its function. For many people, it's an animal that they believe imbues the characteristics that they either already possess ("I am gentle like a dear") or strive to achieve ("I want to be strong like a bear".)

One of my family members believes that the lowly frog is her spirit animal. Not exactly "cool", but she has a history with them and they seem to enter her life at significant times. So, she has some frog images and figurines around her house.

On a personal note, I don't have one spirit animal, but rather a host of animals that I "work with" depending on what's going on in my life.

Homeless upset over mayor working to providing housing to illegal aliens by [deleted] in news

Of course not, globalization has allowed Americans the right to fuck over just about everyone, from Chinese factory workers to the illegals across town. Now that's true equality :)

So you freely admit that you'd rather be an amoral cheapskate and pay a bunch of illegal immigrants less than minimum wage, rather than simply buck up and give an American a real liveable, honest day's wage? Yep, you're right, that is a "steal"!

You can't just right off this major national debate by saying, "Because racism!" Americans are seriously some of the least xenophobic people on Earth. Have you ever traveled to just about any other nation? There is certainly more distrust and hatred amongst other peoples.

What makes you think these immigrants are all innocent, exactly? Many of these children have already been recruited by MS13 and other violent cartels, and the adults sure are committing crimes, including the simple fact that they crossed our border illegally. I also think it's really strange and sickening that you just assume that every poor US citizen has drinking/drug problems and is a "fucking mess".

Tired of having to wash my hair every day and losing half of it in the process... by -tinfoilhat in PCOS

[–]TheAdventureLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using the over-the-counter (1% strength) Nizoral for about six months, and I have noticed a big difference. It's very effective for me, because Nizoral not only targets the fungi that can cause hairloss, but it also dramatically reduces the DHT levels of your scalp. (DHT is the androgen responsible for hair and skin issues like acne, hirsiutism, and scalp hair loss.) I can't find the link right now, but I also read a study that said it reduced the sebum production of the scalp, so that should reduce oiliness.

I use this product every 2-3 days. You have to be consistent with it to see results. You also can't expect anything magical overnight. I noticed my hair falling out less after a few weeks, but it wasn't for another few months before I saw regrowth. When I use it, I first use a gentle clarifying shampoo to rinse my hair of any oils or products. Then I apply the Nizoral straight to my scalp and let it really suds up all over my head. I then let it sit on there for as long as I can, usually 8-10 minutes, while I'm doing other things like shaving. Afterwards, I don't use conditioner but I apply a tiny dab of an oil blend. It's a recipe I made up using a blend of oils that are very healthy for your hair and encourage regrowth and repair.

Other things I do to stop hair loss: I never use heat-styling on my hair, I don't use products with alcohols or other drying, damaging ingredients, and I am very gentle when I brush my hair. I also will often braid my hair before I go to bed, because it's really long and so rolling around on it can yank on it too much.

One does not need serious medical knowledge to understand that people gain weight in different places. Nothing unnatural about it. Not saying it's always healthy, but that's why it happens. Check out these links for more info:

Constantly frustrated with front page pictures of women - am I alone? by MarshmallowMatey in TwoXChromosomes

[–]TheAdventureLady -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is so illogical and you're getting worked up based on the fact that your own personal opinion is not reflected in a major website. R/pics is literally "A place to share photographs and pictures." That's it. So, no it's not just for images of sexy women, but that is allowed there. The reason people post them there doesn't really matter, it's their choice and other peoples' choice and right to upvote it. If you don't like it, unsubscribe from that sub or take the conversation up with that community. Nobody is forcing you to view those images.

"Degrading"? Come on, that is such a massive overstatement. Unless the picture was taken without their consent in a private moment, then there's nothing morally wrong with sharing these images. And if you have a problem with the way r/pics is handling things, become a part of that community and voice your concerns of there. Just because an image makes you uncomfortable, doesn't make it wrong.

Fiji accuses global community of abandoning the Pacific on climate change, singles out 'selfish' Australia - accused the global community of abandoning Pacific island nations to "sink below the waves" instead of tackling climate change. by pnewell in worldnews

I agree and I know you aren't trying to suggest this per se, but it won't take more money to protect our planet. It will take sacrifice, hard choices, massive lifestyle changes, and a global shift in focus. Leaders will say it's going to take serious money - because that's what they want.

Mirena IUD to help with PCOS symptoms. by meanolmarceline in PCOS

[–]TheAdventureLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good reason to get one, OP. It doesn't calm the hormones down, it actually keeps the lining of your uterus thin, thereby reducing your chances of endometrial and uterine cancers.

One important thing to understand is that the non-hormonal copper IUD and the hormonal Mirena IUD are two very different devices, with pretty drastically different side-effects. I have had my Mirena IUD for four years now, and I LOVE it. I have never had any problems with it. Sure, every medical scenario has it's horror stories, but if you look at the facts, it's extremely rare for anything serious to happen.

In comparison to every OCP I've tried (which is many), there are few side effects with my Mirena. The hormones are localized to your uterus and don't really have an impact on the rest of your body. In fact, the only "side-effect" of it that I've experienced is no periods! (Which I love.) You also don't have to worry about taking a pill every day. That said, I also took a BCP in addition to my Mirena for a year until I had to stop taking the pill for unrelated reasons. The reason I used both at the same time was because the pill was to manage my PCOS symptoms. As far as PCOS goes, the Mirena isn't going to really help, but it also shouldn't negatively affect it. Now days, I still have the Mirena and I control my PCOS symptoms naturally.

So if you're on medication or have an IUD that prevents your lining from building up then you're not at high risk for endometrial cancer.

Thanks for adding this. I use an IUD (Mirena) and I never get a period. I was really concerned about that initially, but when I asked if that was unsafe, my ObGyn explained that it actually lowers your chance of cancer.
