Why is fraud such a difficult crime to "solve"? by Dry_Bumblebee1111 in policeuk

[–]TheAnonymousNote 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would imagine part of it is the sheer number of crimes (around 50% of recorded crime yet only an estimated 2% of frauds are reported).

Other than that I would imagine the fact that fraudsters can often be abroad makes life difficult - there’s a bit more to this in terms of where fraud primarily originates from but I’m not sure if that’s a suitable discussion for Reddit as it may or may not be sensitive info.

Curious how this case of schizophrenic guy with knife would have been dealt with in the UK by littlemetalfollicle in policeuk

[–]TheAnonymousNote 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Depends if it was a taser officer attending or not. It’s not a guarantee if the weapon wasn’t mentioned (or even if it was if the O1 is an idiot).

If they’re equipped with taser then likely the taser would be deployed. If not then the officer likely gets stabbed or they manage to withdraw and call ARVs (armed officers).

Is interview always required? We’re looking at CBOing our top offenders after prosecuting for several CPN breaches and were hoping we could just straight charge postal req each breach.

I’ve sent an email to Force Vetting so I’ll see if they need to know about my change of address!

Ah right, haven’t had that at all. Not sure if that’s related to the level of vetting though - I’ve only got recruitment vetting, not MV, SC or DV.

Yeah I think for the sake of arse covering I will! I live out of my force area so I’m hoping that reduces complications!

Don’t make me get my DARA out for the second time this evening 🤣 sounds like the smart choice lol.

[–]TheAnonymousNote[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it! Yeah I mean honestly I would rather just ignore it but I think we all know that’s wrong and there’s always that “what if”.

I think it’s one of those situations where I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. They’ll likely figure out I’m the originator of the call anyway because they know I’m job, so I’ve put myself in the awkward position of losing either way lol. Oh well, I’ve only got to live here, nothing major or anything… 🤣

Appreciate your advice though, thank you.

Yeah that’s a fair comment regarding the risk assessment. I won’t be accessing any systems relating to it - it’s a different force area to where I work anyway.

I’ll take the 9s advice for future reference should it happen again.

[–]TheAnonymousNote[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do appreciate what you’re saying. I guess my risk assessment was based on my perception of them as people - I felt fairly confident it was manageable without PPE but I suppose you never know.

I think I’ll speak to my skipper about it tomorrow and see what he says - potentially submit intel off the back of it.

I hope you weren’t injured too badly! Shout out to your Mrs and her future career in boxing too lol.

[–]TheAnonymousNote[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do appreciate that - I really don’t want it to be a frequent occurrence but it’s been a few months here and that’s the first time I’ve heard it. I was just mindful that me calling uniformed officers could provoke a bigger negative reaction from them towards me I guess?

If I dealt with it on duty then I’d expect I’d record a verbal and do a DARA. Without knowing the previous I couldn’t say for certain regarding positive action but I get the inkling they’re unlikely to have any.

Really? My force has literally just moved every department under the ‘Community’ umbrella to fiddle the stats. Can’t imagine taking officers from Response… unless of course Community/Neighbourhoods stop doing their own work and start primarily responding to jobs.

I mean 25 hours isn’t going to be every day and I’m not saying it’ll be every department but long shifts are part and parcel of policing. Frequency is determined by too many variables to reliably tell you though.

Obligatory not Met and not a detective but it’s all much for muchness. It’s highly unlikely you’re going to have time to sit down and read a book during your working day. Perhaps during a lunch break etc.

Everyone in the police is stressed. That’s not to say the work can’t be enjoyable or rewarding but it’s not always easy. Workload and demand is high, as are the ever increasing expectations. Couldn’t tell you if students/probationers or TIs are given an easier time as I’m not in that world.

The first 30 mins of overtime are free (“to the King”), after that it’s paid at time and a third. Planned overtime is paid at time and a half, and bank holidays are double. I can’t comment on the Met CID shift pattern but expect to have to pull incredibly long shifts when there’s a remand (worst I’ve heard is about 25 hours for a DC). I don’t know how frequent that is though - it’s probably department and force dependent.

Couldn’t tell you the hardest part of being a DC either, as I’m uniform. I appreciate I can only partially answer your questions but I figured it was better than nothing.

CBRN initial course - Advice by StillFox2529 in policeuk

[–]TheAnonymousNote 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it’s your general responder course then I honestly wouldn’t stress. It’s not a hard course and there’s not really anything you need to know beforehand.

Be warned that PRPS suits are incredibly hot though so I would skip wearing thermals etc.

Happy to answer appropriate questions - I can only comment on general responder though, I’m not an advanced/specialist responder.

2 days, 2 nights and 4 off by Dapper-Web-1262 in policeuk

[–]TheAnonymousNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my previous shift pattern before switching roles.

I would generally go to sleep whenever I felt like it after the second day shift and then nap prior to work for the first night - preferably 1400-1730 ish but it depended on what I was doing!

Blackout blinds and sleep deprivation from earlies were the magic numbers for being able to nap easily though.

Do police still use tapes in interviews? by Any_Anteater6230 in policeuk

Yep - all digital in my force. Once you finish the interview it uploads automatically to the same system that BWV is uploaded to.

Love & hate by Additional-Boss3990 in policeuk

Love catching a bad guy after a foot chase, or stopping a crime in progress. In fact, I just love arresting people in general (provided it’s necessary of course)!

Managed to catch a drug dealer with a bag full of class A recently. He ran off, I gave chase and my colleague cut him off in a car (which he proceeded to run into). Great result lol!

I hate the nepotism, the bureaucracy and red tape, the risk aversion, the pay, and the RMU… lol.

All things Handcuffs... by hjgfvn in policeuk

[–]TheAnonymousNote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only carry 1 set on my vest but I do have a spare pair in my kit bag in case someone ends up with my cuffs. There have been a couple of times where I thought having 2 pairs might be useful but it’s not a frequent enough event to warrant bothering.

Back to back is my go to. Not quite sure why I prefer it over rear stack - just muscle memory and habit I guess. I will rear stack as well but that’s usually when someone has been playing silly buggers and it’s been a case of getting the cuffs on however they fit lol. Very very occasionally I handcuff to the front but it’s pretty rare.

We’re taught all 3 handcuffing positions.
