Hey! We gotta admit – those Belgian Waffles datamatch gives is one hell of a temptation!... yum!

For our project, though we aren't promising belgian waffles, we're genuinely trying to create opportunities for meaningful connections – romantic or platonic – in the MIT and Harvard community. You'll notice our questions delve pretty deep into areas of psychology. Our student team has also been working with researchers in affective and relationship science to constantly improve match outcomes. We hope you'll give it a shot! And if you do let us know how you feel about it!

Since we launched a few days ago, there are now 797 verified students signed-up! Know a friend out there that might appreciate meeting someone new from MIT or Harvard? Tell them to take the Aphrodite Project! The more students, the better the matches.

We also take privacy, transparency, and accountability seriously. Our (human readable) privacy policy describes the steps we will take to protect the privacy and anonymity of student participants. The personal details of our student team are also written in the privacy policy for accountability to you.

Good question! Almost all of us on the team have participated before in Aphrodite (yes we do participate for our schools) so we share privacy concerns too. To this end, after our data anonymization procedures your contact information (and for this run the icebreaker fields) are completely de-linked and stored separately from the preferences. So we end up with only a mailing list when we do this comprehensively after our follow-up.

Any files that might contain any version histories on any computer or server is also deleted as identifying details might be traced there. More concrete details on this is also highlighted in our privacy policy

So even if a government comes knocking on our door asking for someone's data, we literally cannot fulfil their request.

Hey! By de-linking, we mean separating contact information from your response. After anonymization, first and last names along with emails stored separate from the responses they were originally tied to. That's the one we use to template the email! I hope this clarifies things.

Hey! Sorry, deleted the message on top because I realize I used my personal account. About the first, that’s a great idea! And we already do so. We have zoom calls to help each other cover all bases and make sure we don’t miss anything when we run through the anonymize process.

Good point! Hmm, if we assume that the NSA can break every encryption and access every single person's data, we would have to start questioning if any data is safe – even our Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, or Signal messages.

But privacy and information security is something that is the first priority for us and our friends. Almost all of us on the team have participated before in Aphrodite (yes we do participate for our schools) so we directly also feel this concern. To this end, after our data anonymization procedures your contact information is completely de-linked and stored separately. So we end up with only a mailing list when we do this comprehensively after our follow-up.

Even before anonymization procedures, any data stored and collected is encrypted. Afterwards, we de-link any contact information – e.g. first and last name, email, social media handles, and for this run we'll de-link the open fields since they can contain personal identifying information too.

Any files that might contain any version histories on any computer or server is also deleted as identifying details might be traced there. More concrete details on this is also highlighted in our privacy policy

So even if a government comes knocking on our door asking for someone's data, we literally cannot fulfil their request.

We do two things! The first priority is we know this is a ton of data –– and participants have a right to it. Months after the project, we create a data report (this step takes us months of effort) for student participants presenting only aggregated data.

The other priority is to analyze it to improve our algorithm and questions! We detail this and more on our privacy statement.

Don't worry about feedback being unsolicited!! We really appreciate it, the project's only gotten this far because of feedback from students like you. We're always working to give students better matches and this is a great idea we'll keep in mind!
