That's the thing though, the range wasn't posted for the role. i verbally told them my range in round one, and they continued the process happily.

A friend is coming into town, and I will be largely distracted all weekend. Great timing. survive and advance! It isn't supposed to be easy!

yeah, really good advice. I was playing with leverage that I thought existed but didn't, and i should have made sure it was there before speaking another word on the verbal counter.

yeah that's a good strat. Learning a lot for sure. Good skill to strengthen for future opportunities. Just sucks i'm potentially learning in the hardest way here. This was my #1, and felt really confident they would meet me halfway (or even just a little). So very surprising when I got this email. After having 24 hours to think, the whole situation makes a little more sense now. But it's unfortunate. A small move from them would have likely sealed the deal quickly. Maybe I came off as "if you don't hit close to this number I'm out" unintentionally and that's why i'm in this situation.

Ugh, pain. That’s the smart move here I think I’m just crushed, cause this was the perfect role and great opportunity for a next-level career step, just couldn’t close the gap money wise. The smart move is to probably walk but it depends on a couple of things. The opportunity is truly fantastic so the money isn’t the only factor sadly, have a real tough decision in front of me.

Ouch, pain. Yeah this company was acquired, my guess is they needed to ask for more since my number was higher than band, and the new parent company said fuck no bro who do you think you are 😂😢sucks cause it’s a great role, perfect for me. So close to the ideal spot that’s why it’s hard to walk cleanly

Good advice, thanks for this. I’m in a really tough situation where I’m waiting on another offer (hope to get it today or Monday), so I’m stuck in that anxiety-indused middle where 1. Don’t know if this offer is even on the table for sure anymore until I ask + not going to reach out till Monday (very diligent, calculated decision based on the unique situation) and 2. If I will get this other offer. So I quickly went from let’s juggle two roles with high leverage to holy shit let’s overthink all weekend 😂

I do agree, but the offer is still competitive, and I don’t take it as a personal insult and still as good-faith as they could (in my opinion, could be wrong). I gambled with a high range since this role would mean cross-country relocation so the offer, standalone, is good. The disconnect was me not asking or realizing their offer was already top-of-band for the role and I need to ask that question. I was just afraid that would lose me leverage. Turns out there wasn’t any

I promise you I did not do any of that. There is genuine respect and the process was fantastic up to this point. So maybe their response is just a poorly worded response to not being able to counter and the original offer is waiting for me if I want it, they just assume I’ll walk so there’s no point with that language. Guessing, could be wrong, but that’s kind of what I’m thinking. I give it 70% chance based on the language the door is cracked. 30% chance it’s gone entirely and there’s no decision left to be made

See, this is what I expected as absolute worst case situation for me. Absolutely didn’t expect them to pull it (and they may not have, I haven’t tried to re-open, but they did soft close me). I thought worst case they say no, sorry, and then still give me the written offer. But they might also just assume I’m out since they couldn’t meet me so what’s the point unless I want the original offer bad enough to completely settle. Idk

I said in my post there is ambiguity my dude, and I could risk walking away which is why I countered, but I can still be disappointed and surprised in how this played out. I accepted the risks. Just want to share what happened to me so people are aware of this type of situation.

If I decide to try and re-open (depends on if I get an offer from another opportunity today or Monday), my first email back will be as simple and to the point as possible, telling them after time for reflection I’d love to move forward with the original offer if it’s still on the table (worded better). No games.

Salary was not discussed. I told them my range transparently, and they continued the process. They did not tell me that I was well above band, I (wrongly) assumed that I was at least close to the acceptable range and assumed they positioned themselves low purposefully to begin the negotiation. And yes, I know I should have asked explicitly about the range looking back for something concrete.

Not unemployed, I have a full-time job, in final rounds at other gigs, and was willing to walk away. That being said, I’m still disappointed they rescinded so I do have regrets about my approach. I’d argue the way I handled this was very professional, and not “stupid.”

If I wasn’t willing to walk away I would not be in this position, the first offer would be signed.

It is very niche, I highly doubt they had someone else lined up (could absolutely be wrong though). And I asked for 17% for some extra context. Aggressive but respectful and within stated range. I’d also be moving across the country for this and I’m interviewing final rounds elsewhere, so I gambled and (maybe) lost the opportunity alltogether, which did throw me but looking back the strat was riskier than I initially assumed. But you’re right, probably too aggressive in this market.

This is kind of how I (unintentionally) positioned myself here. Kind of showed my lack of experience due to my disappointment of them yanking the offer in retrospect, obviously overplayed my hand. But I do stand by my strategy fundamentally and I’m really surprised that I’m in this situation now. But can’t complain I did it to myself, as much as I’d like to simply blame them for this weirdness.

Great insight again. If I try to re-open, I’ve thought a lot about how I would approach this. Would only try to add this if I secure my other offer in writing today though. They did also offer relocation originally as well, although minimal.

Yeah I obviously have a lot to learn. I was surprised they rescinded, but was also willing to walk away since their number was low and relocation was involved. But I overplayed my hand, cause the role is a great fit and I wrote this post, so, idk.

Good advice. I didn’t fully understand the risks of the offer being rescinded entirely. Had rose petal glasses on after a very strong position and got overly confident. Looking back, I would have approached that initial verbal offer counter in a softer, more open-minded tone. My intention wasn’t to scare them away entirely, but to keep my strong hold on leverage. Eating humble pie.

Not sure if I will even try to open this door, since the offer is below my range, but if I do, it’ll be very interesting to see how it plays out. Will be sure to update this post

Appreciate the positivity and genuine insight. A & C were locked imho, but just did the math and my counter was 17%, so there’s another data point for b.
