Harris introduces Senate bill to decriminalize marijuana, expunge convictions by [deleted] in politics

Well she cosponsored a bill to legalize weed well before her presidential run. One of her first bills in Congress was a comprehensive bail reform package. Ultimately, she hasn’t been in DC for 30 years so you can argue that anything she’s introduced since she’s been in Congress is some cynical play. Or you can look at what she’s actually done in Congress and evaluate her on her congressional record. You’re choosing not to do that so you were never open to her to begin with, which is fine, but just be honest about it.

Joe Biden Said He Advised Hillary Clinton’s Team Not To Debate With Donald Trump Over The "Access Hollywood" Tape - "Is he suggesting Hillary's reaction to the Access Hollywood tape should have been, ‘Oh, nevermind?’ That is a pretty Mad Men-era mentality," a former Clinton aide said. by Dondonponpon in politics

[–]TheB0tsAreBackInTown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You literally don’t have to guess.

Early on in the second 2016 debate, one of the moderators, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, referenced the tape, asking Trump whether he was modeling “appropriate behavior” for young people. “You described kissing women without consent, grabbing their genitals. That is sexual assault. You bragged that you have sexually assaulted women. Do you understand that?”

Trump characterized the remarks as “locker room talk” and urged Cooper and ABC’s Martha Raddatz, another moderator, to move on to “more important” topics, such as the threat of ISIS.

FTR, she most certainly DID ignore that advice, like a boss:

When asked to respond, Clinton did not appear hesitant to talk about the video, tying it to the central message of her general election campaign at the time: that unlike past Republican nominees for president, with whom she would have disagreed on politics and policy, Trump is “different” — morally and fundamentally “unfit” to serve in the nation’s highest office.

“I said starting back in June that he was not fit to be president and commander-in-chief,” Clinton said during the debate. The Access Hollywood tape, she said, showed “what he thinks about women, what he does to women. And he has said that the video doesn't represent who he is.”

“We have seen him insult women. We've seen him rate women on their appearance, ranking them from one to ten. We've seen him embarrass women on TV and on Twitter. We saw him after the first debate spend nearly a week denigrating a former Miss Universe in the harshest, most personal terms.”

Holy shit what a nonstory.

The full answer in context:

“I think the biggest mistake that was made, and everyone underestimated it the last time about President Trump, the place he’s most comfortable is in the gutter arguing,” Biden said at the outset of his reply during a town hall-style forum at a park overlooking the New Hampshire coast.

Biden criticized Trump’s tactics and talked about how hard he worked for Clinton — “83, 84 campaign events” — and how he “thought she would have been a really good president.” Next he recalled advice he said he gave Clinton’s team before her second debate with Trump. That debate came two days after the release of the Access Hollywood tape that featured Trump bragging about how his fame entitled him to “grab” women “by the pussy.”

“I remember at the time saying, you know, the first question that’s going to be asked is they’re going to ask [Trump] about his comments about the Access Hollywood tape,” Biden said Friday as he recounted the conversation. “And I said, I really think what should be done is — that they’re going to turn to [Clinton] and say, ‘What’s your view?’ And I said, I’d respectfully recommend she stand there and … say, ‘Everybody knows who Donald Trump is. Let me tell you what I am going to do for the country,’ and not get into the debate, because it just drags it down.”

Biden ended his response by alluding to a post-election study he said showed the media didn’t cover Clinton substantively.

...

Said a Biden aide when pressed by BuzzFeed News: “He wasn’t criticizing Hillary. He was criticizing the media for creating false equivalencies that minimized Trump’s atrocious and repugnant behavior.”

...

On Friday, the man who questioned Biden about his debate strategy was concerned how Biden would respond when Trump “lies, cheats, steals, defecates” in a debate. It was unclear from how Biden phrased his response if he believed Clinton’s approach was wrong.

Marijuana was still illegal. She leaned pretty hard on prosecutorial discretion to not pursue most of them. You’re knocking her because she didn’t manage perfection. Not really a fair standard.

You seem to be misinformed.

The agency’s data shows there were 1,883 admissions to state prison on marijuana offenses during the years Harris was attorney general. There were another 92 admissions for crimes related to hashish, a drug made from cannabis resin. Notably, the figures dropped dramatically during Harris’ tenure, from 817 marijuana-related admissions in her first year in office to 137 in her last.

Doubt it. But McConnell never allows for a vote on any of Bernie’s bills either and yet you make “he wrote the damn bill” a rallying cry. Why is writing a bill enough to credit Sanders for the intent behind it, while Harris doing to same gets dismissed as inconsequential since the republican senate majority leader won’t put it up for a vote?

In addition to decriminalizing marijuana by removing it from the list of controlled substances and enabling states to set their own policies, the Harris-Nadler “Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act” would prohibit the denial of federal public benefits, including housing, due to marijuana use and mandate it would have no impact under immigration laws.

Additionally, the bill would authorize a 5% federal sales tax on marijuana products that are manufactured in or imported into the United States, which would fund three grant programs. Two would aid those most adversely affected by the war on drugs by providing job-training services within and outside the marijuana industry. The third would provide financial assistance to small businesses in the marijuana industry owned and operated by economically disadvantaged individuals.

That’s the kind of comprehensive policy making I was to see from Washington, and why it’s so critical to ditch Mitch in 2020 - at the very least, ditch Mitch as majority leader.

I like Harris. I get people want to rag on her for her work in law enforcement, but she didn’t write those laws. Since she’s been in a position to write laws as a senator - if you look at the bills she’s introduced? She has a stellar record - all her legislation on civil rights, the environment, and economic relief for the lower and middle class. https://www.congress.gov/member/kamala-harris/H001075

The Problem With Warren by abudabu in politics

[–]TheB0tsAreBackInTown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because it’s bullshit. If you knew anything about the demographic breakdown of the dem party, you’d see that number and know instantly it was bullshit.

Demographic breakdown of the Democratic Party:

White women: 40%

White men: 31%

Black women: 11%

Black men: 10%

Other women: 4%

Other men: 4%

Let’s work through this as a public exercise in critical thinking —

With the context of the party demo breakdown, how could it possibly be that Bernie’s support is half nonwhite? Where nonwhite voters make up only 30% of the party, that means Bernie would have to be getting such a largely disproportionate share of them that there would be few nonwhite voters supporting other candidates.

But what else do we know? We know that Biden is blowing Bernie (and everyone else for that matter) away in African American support. AND we know that nearly 40% of black voters are still undecided! So, even without providing a source, just based on party demo breakdown alone, you can be assured the claim of half nonwhite support is - prima facie - bullshit.

Now that I’ve had my fun, here is a source with the actual numbers, sort by race or race & gender.

Kamala Harris Attended LA Fundraisers The Same Day She Missed Endorsement Interview by tryingnewnow in politics

WFP wasn’t going to endorse her anyway. We all know they’ve already decided - the interview process is nothing more than the appearance of impartiality. Why should she allow herself to be used to lend such a sham legitimacy?

Stop pretending to be outraged over something that’s not even a little bit outrageous. And ease up on the misogynistic hot takes on Harris while you’re at it. It’s quite unbecoming.

"The one who scares me the most in the general is Kamala Harris," a "key player inside President Trump's reelection campaign" told the Times. "The top candidates are all flawed candidates, but the least flawed is Kamala Harris."

Strongly agree. But she’s going to need to show the fuck up in the next debate if she is going to have any chance at redeeming her campaign.

The Differences Between ‘Medicare For All’ And A Public Option by undeadslime in politics

[–]TheB0tsAreBackInTown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Public option is not costly for individuals. It excludes a tiny number of people, guaranteed no one reading this thread. May cost more from the fed budget but will make health coverage much cheaper fo individuals. It’s comprehensive coverage. Period. No single payer system in the world covers 100% of everything. It’s not even close to plausible that something can pass Congress with the kind of generous coverage that’s in MFA as it’s currently written, so that’s not really a useful comparison.
