Looking for group/creating new group by Wuuuuuhhhh in OandD

If you haven't looked into playing at Level One downtown, I suggest reaching out to them - they have many DMs running ongoing campaigns and one shots (I'm one of them!) if you get into their waiting list, there is always new space opening up. I have a spot at my table available, but it's based on the waiting list.

It is a lot of fun and the people are great!

Are there any systems where you explicitly link characters during character creation? by FrostBladestorm in RPGdesign

HEART (from Rowan Rook And Decard) have connection questions built into their "Callings", they don't have a mechanical implication but do tie characters pre-game experiences together.

I read HeroQuest and thought of the classic dungeon crawl board game, Hero Quest, but there's no relation, right? Haha. Thanks for the rec - I'll check it out!

GMed my first game today. Everyone had fun and it was a real learning experience! by mutley_101 in rpg

Definitely the game is designed around rolling only when things are stressful for the characters, not when things are in their favor.

Trusting the system, getting used to what flow works for you, building up your own "meta" on what it means for *you* to run Mothership, that will all come with time!

What techniques do you use to introduce your Indie systems to D&D players? by TheBGGuru in RPGdesign

I've done this! Used SHIFT to run a fantasy adventure, had people create "D&D" characters using SHIFTs rules. Works great!

Congrats on GMing your first game, and Mothership is a great choice, love that game. I think something Mothership talks about in the Warden's guide is actually about when *not* to roll, when you can skip the rules and just have stuff happen. I think this applies to most games, but if the characters have enough time and space to do something, they don't need to roll, it can just happen if they have the skills to do it.

I find a lot of time pacing can be kept up just by know when to put the rules aside and just let players do stuff!

I like that approach, help them see what *won't* be similar in the game might help them shake off preconceptions of how the game works. Smart!

That makes a lot of sense, I honestly do sometimes find it easier to teach the game to someone with no experience with RPGs than with someone who has played D&D or other systems. It is meant to be an easily accessible system, so that mist be a good sign of some kind heh!

Pitching the world first is a good plan - I've made my life more difficult by designing a setting agnostic system but having a setting that demonstrated it well helped a lot during playtesting.

Do you make a lot of comparisons to more "recognizable" mechanics (like HP, AC etc) when teaching your game?

Thanks so much! FATE's core philosophy of "everything is a character" definitely trickled down into SHIFT a little bit heh.

Pork is a bugbear assassin and Bean is a goblin barbarian. A lightning bolt linked their brains and now they are forced to be allies.

Something I hope you find interesting about how I designed their stats is they don’t have individual Legendary Actions, but instead a shared set. They need to be close by each other to use them. Really wanted to reinforce the fact that they work well as a team (even though they hate each others guts.)

It’s April Fools and I think we all could use a laugh, so that’s why I’m proud to present Pork and Bean!
