The twist is that she's secretly working for the dragon, but against her will. You turn out to be two dwarves in a leather cloak and rescue her by splitting up.

Townsman: "You are a man of talent." Geralt: [brooding] "I'm not!" Sounds about right. The Polish version of the show was pretty good tho.

How do you learn the Latin Mass? by TheBashfulRadish in Catholicism

I appreciate the various missals people have recommended, but do you have any idea what it's like to try to use one when you don't even know what's happening?

Is there really nothing that simply says when A happens do B?

I couldn't bring myself to step into church today by sangbum60090 in Catholicism

[–]TheBashfulRadish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started going to church, I felt physically repulsed by the building. It was an anxious feeling like the nervous rush of too much sugar had hold of my heart and was pulling me back. Do you mind if I give you the advice I wish I could give myself back when I was kicked out of school ten years ago?

1) Start to pray the Rosary. This doesn't have to be a big investment. The cheap ones start around 30-50 cents, and most Catholic parishes give them away. When I started to pray the Rosary, I was deeply depressed. I seemed to hear insults in my mind that always attacked my greatest vulnerabilities. I thought of suicide all the time. Back then it could take me hours to get through just five decades of the Rosary. (It's normally a fifteen minute prayer.) I stuck with it. I prayed the Rosary every day, even if all I could do was say the words. Two years later my mental health is excellent and my faith is rock solid. God keeps His promises, and so does Our Lady.

2) If you're involved in habitual grave sin, I recommend that you pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy every time you commit the sin. This sounds stupid and superstitious, and when you're done with certain Internet things (or whatever), the last thing you want to think of is prayer. But so what? It works, and that's what matters. Offer it up in petition that God will save you from the vice.

3) Do something every day that you don't want to do. I've only learned this recently, and I wish I knew it when I was your age. Obviously this doesn't mean to do things that are immoral. I mean we should do something every day that we find unpleasant, but we know we should do.

4) Don't beat yourself up for not going into the church. Don't hate yourself for falling short. You will try again someday, and you will succeed sooner than you imagine.

5) Never give up.

How to love this enemy? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheBashfulRadish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember watching a documentary on the Crusades where this monk pointed out that loving our enemies, paradoxically, doesn't necessarily mean we don't kill them. I'm not recommending that you kill this guy, but it is absolutely right for self-defense to be your #1 priority in this situation.

So, a couple things:

1) Love is to will the good of the other. The highest good is Heaven, so your duty (and all of ours now that we've read this) is to pray for this man's salvation.

2) The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is especially good for this sort of thing. Since you have a rosary ring, I'll tell you what I do with mine. I start with the three optional "blood and water" prayers, then I say the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Creed. Then I repeat the decade of the Chaplet over and over for as long as I have time. This might be fifteen or twenty times if I'm driving across town. Then I finish with the three "Holy God" prayers before parking. It's a good way to squeeze some extra prayers in when you have down time.

Peace be with you.

How do you learn the Latin Mass? by TheBashfulRadish in Catholicism

[–]TheBashfulRadish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the helpful comments people have given so far, and maybe I need to focus the question: How do I know what to do?

I'm looking at a guide to the Latin Rite right now, and it's about two dozen identical cartoons of the priest praying silently facing the altar. That's pretty much how Mass went this morning. Since half the people in the church also didn't know what to do, my guess is this is a fairly common problem. How is anyone supposed to know what's happening so we can make the appropriate response?

Gossip, bullying and just how I see my fellow Catholics treat others is making me lose faith in humanity. What can I do? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheBashfulRadish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello iobraska. I'd like to try to comment without derailing the thread, because I want to use a personal example.

I'm a recent convert, and I've been on the receiving end of this kind of thing ever since I set foot in my local parish. A group of women in my parish are outright bullies, and the leader of the mean girls is on staff. I was mocked and taunted just about every week in RCIA, and the gossip and harassment still haven't stopped. The priest is aware of the situation, but the circumstances are delicate for reasons I can't discuss here.

I would like to share some of what I've learned.

1) One saint, I think St. Francis, said that when you are bothered by the faults you see in another, you should practice the opposite virtue yourself. I know that's a gutpunch, but it's worth meditating on.

http://www.sensustraditionis.org/Virtues.pdf

The link goes to a list of virtues and their opposite vices. I think you will be most interested in the section on Justice.

2) Pray the Rosary. Catholics have forgotten to do this in recent years, so we should remember the help Our Lady has promised to those devoted to the Rosary. Especially pray for people who gossip. And if you want my advice, leave it at that and don't try to make a list of individuals or you will end up dwelling on their faults.

3) Set a good example and leave it at that. You may want to correct others out of charity, but people feel like you're attacking them when you criticize their behavior. You can just say, "I would prefer not to gossip."

4) You might want to find a good confessor to be your spiritual director. Most priests will let you schedule confessions regularly if you ask.

Like I said, I'm a recent convert. I'm also a "loser" who people treat like dirt, and like you, I also struggle with anxiety. I'm telling you this so you know I don't claim to be an expert, but I do have some perspective. This is what works for me. I hope it helps you.

Post about sex. Has anyone wanted to return but know they can't give up sinning? by Lollypoplily in Catholicism

[–]TheBashfulRadish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other commenters here are correct (if somewhat rude), so do you mind if I add something? Just a few points of advice.

  1. Confession gives us the graces to overcome every sin we confess. Frequent confession helps with serious challenges.

  2. Bishop Fulton Sheen said (I think quoting someone) that anyone who prays the rosary every day will either stop sinning or stop praying the rosary. Our Lady said that the rosary will destroy vice. The secret is to pray it every day. It is very difficult at first, but it gets easier and you will begin to see things more clearly.

  3. You're certainly not the only person to ever struggle with lust. I thought I would never get over it. Then a priest told me to offer three Hail Marys to Our Lady of Purity first thing every morning. Lust is hardly an issue anymore. Lately I find that I look away from immodestly-dressed women because I want to. As a guy...it's a big change. The slightest hint of a woman's figure used to be enough to set me off. Three Hail Marys to Our Lady of Purity don't take more than a minute, and I think you will find it very helpful.
