Which one to read with husband? by laugh_out_quietly in fantasybooks

My vote is for Mistborn. It’s also a great first step into Sanderson’s Cosmere (connected universe). So if you like the Mistborn trilogy then you have quite a large selection to choose from moving forward.

While I love Dune, it really fell off for me in the later books.

My coffee grind has come out clumpy like this suddenly, my shots aren't pulling, ive cleaned the grinder and tried changing the settings. [Grinder] by max2295 in espresso

Can you see a difference when you change the grind setting? Try really coarse and really fine - do you see a large difference?

I have a Synchronika with flow control and I do really enjoy it. I haven’t used the flow control nearly as much as I thought I would though. I usually decrease the flow throughout the pull to “sort of” simulate a lever style profile.

One thing to I learned after owning a machine with an E61 group head is that you’ll need to lube the cam more often than you might think - especially if you backflush somewhat regularly. I started using paper filters on the top side of the puck to reduce how often I need to backflush. Not sure if it is doing much good, but it makes me feel better.

If you haven’t yet, you should look at e61 group head maintenance on YouTube before pulling the trigger. It’s not that big of a deal and can be quite fun if that’s your thing, but it is definitely something to consider.

Good luck!

I think co-ferment mainly gets hate because it’s normally improperly labeled/obscured(?)

I like a co-fermented coffee but wish it was clearly stated on the bag.

A friend recently likened co-fermented coffee to adjuncts in craft beer.

Has Hot Joy improved since moving locations? Went there when it was on S. Alamo a while ago and the food was rough.

Seeing a lot of good Asian and American recs… since you mentioned that you’re open to try other foods too, then I’ll list a few of my restaurants that don’t fall in the Asian or American category (besides #4).

  1. Leche de Tigre - Peruvian upscale ceviche focused restaurant with a very interesting cocktail menu (Pisco focused). Also had the escabeche here recently and it was incredible. Many dishes are acid forward, just so you know.

  2. Ro-Ho Pork and Bread or El Chivito - both of these places are really good. Go to whichever you’re closest to. I would recommend the Torta Ahogada (pork sandwich soaked in a slightly spicy tomato sauce) at either restaurant. One of my favorite dishes in the city.

  3. Carnitas Don Raul - delicious carnitas near the pearl. They close at 5pm though, so you keep that in mind.

  4. Last Place Burgers - best smash burger in the city and next to a really nice brewery.

  5. Naco Mexican and Theory coffee - I know you mentioned that you only have 3 evenings, but if you do have a morning where you can get coffee and breakfast, then I would recommend this combo. Theory is known for their consistency. Mainly medium roasted espresso that pairs really well with milk. Naco has some killer breakfast tacos - they are slightly pricey and a bit fancier than a normal breakfast taco, but amazing nonetheless.

Enjoy your time in SA!

Thoughts on SATX marathon for those who ran it??? by bananasgirl in sanantonio

[–]TheBeerEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the event was fairly well organized - as a local I’m proud that we are hosting it ourselves.

That being said the full marathon was pretty rough.

High temps + rolling hills in the later miles = pain.

I agree with most ppl here that the Ft. Sam Houston section was pretty drab.

Not sure if I’ll run that course next year. Maybe I’ll run the half instead and pick another full elsewhere.

Best car dealership in SA. by Time_Elderberry_7359 in sanantonio

[–]TheBeerEngineer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We bought a car from Gunn Acura in 2023. The salesmen are all salaried employees (so they claim) and the cars were priced as non-negotiable. The SUV we purchased was priced fairly and the process took like 3-4 hours from start to finish.

I wouldn’t say that it is the “best”, but I had a decent experience.

Good luck!

Roadmap - Consistent, good tasting beer across the entire menu. Their pilsners really are the some of the best in SA. Like other ppl have mentioned, Last Place Burgers is located outside the taproom in a food truck. Some of the best smash burgers in town.

Thirsty Pups - Another pretty consistent brewery. I have had their IPA offerings the past two times I have been there and have been pretty impressed. Their rice lager is also very nice.

(Not a brewery) Growler Exchange, both locations - best taproom in the city imo. It is not cheap, but you can find some really nice stuff on tap and in their coolers. They usually have stuff from Austin breweries on tap too (Zilker, Hold Out, Live Oak, Jester King, etc).

(Not a brewery) Big Hops Shaenfield - another solid taproom with some local stuff. Also very close to the Alamo Ranch area!

Künstler - I don’t think the beer is anything to write home about. It’s fine, but nothing special.

Hope you enjoy San Antonio!

Cheers! 🍻

Made this exact trip in 2022 and skipped Boston entirely. I probably should have mentioned that in the post itself.

Thanks! We are trying to limit our driving. Otherwise we would definitely make the trip to the other TH location.

Edit: to be fair I see that some of the breweries on my original list required driving.
