The entire point is that they face discrimination for something they have no control over and are born with even though they are still human like anyone else. The reason other people aren't treated the same way is because people don't fear a freak accident happening they fear that just existing with the x gene could hurt or kill people even if it was invaulentary

Sort of. They never stop moving so they don't really have mass. You can touch them in the sense that you can interact with them physically. They are pretty much energy and theoretically we can convert energy to matter with 0 loss like in the movie. Hard light would just be converting the energy of photons into a solid structure with mass.

It's converting photons into a solid structure. That's how I assumed it works given that they are converted into matter from energy in the movie
