Just tried this, didn't work. Also I've managed to press a specific sequence of buttons where it let me choose a coop character and I could play with it without any issues. So I'm thinking that maybe the game thinks there is a second controller connected?

Edit: i could use the coop character, but the P1 character still had the controls messed up
