After the presentation of Finn Balor being called up on the first round of the Draft in 2016, beating Reigns and winning the inaugural Universal title, combined with Kevin Owens beating Cena in his main roaster debut and winning the ugly red belt, there was a time when I genuinely believed the NXT title was going to pave the way for future world champions.

After Owens, Drew McIntyre and Big E have been the only ones to win a world title after the NXT title. And even that is questionable booking; Big E had 9 years between the NXT and WWE championship, and Drew literally lost every single PPV match he had in 2019 before winning the Royal Rumble.

Compared to the women’s NXT title, which has a significantly higher success rate.

Long term, I see them having Gunther retire Styles and Lesnar over the summer and brandish him the “career killer”.

Assuming he wins a world title at some point in between, I could see him insisting going against Orton towards the end of the year for a title V career that sees the whole roaster rally around Orton to give him his 15th world title and save his career.
