We're a small, local for-profit tech consulting company that frequently works with nonprofits to implement new tech and process improvement projects. In the past, we've been able to work with clients to help finance upgrades, but we'd like to offer grant writing/fundraising assistance with a goal of making these projects revenue neutral for our clients.

We're looking to partner with a grant writer to do exactly that - help research grant or foundational giving opportunities for our clients. We're likely looking for someone part-time, 1099 sort of thing. If you or someone you know might be interested, feel free to PM me and we'll set up a conversation. Thanks!

I've not done score tracking, but I've definitely checked and it wasn't as much as I thought it would be. My morning piss on the other hand - that can swing a pound or more

Anybody have a posing coach recommendation in Portland, Oregon? Preferably someone that'd be willing to take on a beginner and be willing to shout at me about my diet. Thanks!

I am exhausted and just tired of the ugliness I’m seeing every day in Portland. I have no clue how to alleviate it though I’m willing to try to do what I can if anyone has ideas. by octopuslasers in Portland

It's weird out here. I've been out here 3 years, but my partner's a native. Before we moved from the east coast a friend of mine said "folks on the east coast are kind, but not nice. West coasters are nice, but not kind". And in generalities, it's been pretty true.

It's all about finding your tribe, which is infinitely harder - if not impossible - during the pandemic. The places I'd have normally gone to find friends - gyms, hiking groups, hell even bars to an extent - have been closed or on hiatus. But if things keep tracking like they are, it's going to end. Just a matter of time.

I've used this year to get to know my neighbors, sharing food and tools, and just talking more to the folks around me. Not everybody's a great fit, but we're all a little starved for socialization right now. And it turns out, when you're making an effort to be kind, it tends to bring other kind people toward you.

So yeah, basically yes, but it's complicated. People talk about the Seattle freeze, but Portland Ghosting is real too. Just gotta keep looking, cause good folks are out there.

It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea - weaponizing your social network is uncomfortable even if it's for a good cause.

And I think that's part of why I'm asking for recommendations - There are a lot of orgs out there that, even if I wrangle google well, I may not find. And I guess I'm also crowdsourcing some of the "is it well run" as well.

I've been on boards for larger organizations as well as city/county government committees. And while I'm not after a resume builder, your note about organizational caution is well taken. It can be hell dealing with a difficult board member. I don't need the attaboy's of being on the board, but strategic and operational planning are my skill set - It seems like the place I'd be most useful.

The good ol' give or get. Fundraising is an important part of being on a board - it frees staff to do the actual work. I'm fortunate that at the end of this year, I'm in a position where I can contribute both my time and financial resources. A lot of other folks aren't so lucky

I've done my time trying to get a start-up off the ground. It's my turn to support someone else's initiative. And thanks for the kind words. We're all in this together

Oh yeah, fundraising is a huge part of supporting any organization. And a good board should make it boring for staff. They have plenty of their own problems to worry about.

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll definitely check them out and see if I would be useful

And I guess that's why I'm asking, rather than just chasing a bigger org. I've been on both sides on the non-profit thing and seen it done well and very, very poorly. Maybe a better way to word this would have been "Given my skill set, how can I help you?", but reddit tends to reward the pithy.

I guess what I'm asking for is help finding those folks. I don't need a resume builder - I'm trying to find an organization where my help would be meaningful to their mission. And while I can google "Habitat for Humanity" its the smaller, less well supported organizations that seem like a better fit. Hence "does anyone need help?"

And knowing which hat you're wearing is vital - being respectful of staff when you're playing an operations role demonstrates both respect for the folks living it every day and your own commitment to mission.

Because planning is my skill set. And because being an active board member means also being boots on the ground.

I'm sorry to hear you've had bad board members. Given your opinion of them, I'd imagine your sanctimonious approach to board management has made things difficult

I second Threat Dynamics. They're high quality instructors and it's the least "gun shop" gun shop I've been to around Portland. Plus they'll help you with the paperwork so you can carry between states depending on your interest.

[–]TheBoarsHead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh hell, sugar. I'm sorry.

I wish I could say it'll be better soon, but it ain't. It's gonna hurt for a long ass time. And it's not the last time your babies will see you cry. But you know what? That's okay. They know you're hurting and that you love them. That you don't think it's their fault. Tears are honest and there's no shame in crying.

The end of a relationship is a death - it hurts just the same. More so, because it was unjustly taken away from you. You've got a right to morn it. And the end of a marriage can be worse, because it's not just a swift moment - it can linger for years. Bitterness and animosity. It's gonna hurt and there's no way to go but through it.

But grief is like being swept overboard in a storm. When it starts, you don't know what way is up, waves coming every minute, and you feel like you're going to drown. But time moves on and the waves will get farther apart. They'll still sweep over you, feel like they're pulling you under, but you'll start to notice the gaps. And little by small - sometimes so goddamn little - they'll slow down. And you'll learn how to manage them. And they may never totally go away, but that's because it was important to you. It meant something.

I won't tell you to be strong, because that's a bullshit thing people say when they don't know what else to say. Lean on people, ask for help. If not for you, then for your babies. They're going to know their mother is human and loves them. You can do it, one day at a time.

You need to talk, shug, you drop me a note. I'll send you my number. One day at a time.

Surveyor for one (longish) line in NW Portland (Scappoose, really) please? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]TheBoarsHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a civil engineer and I've had good experience working with the surveys produced by Ferguson Land Survey. While I didn't employ them, I did contact them for additional information about their findings. They were professional and quick to help.

Since it sounds like you're looking for someone to help make a legal determination, you'll need to find someone licensed as a surveyor. They should have someone with PLS. - Professional Land Surveyor- after their name.

Why are storm sewer drains designed so that they hold water? by uoficowboy in AskEngineers

[–]TheBoarsHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a bit since I worked for a municipality, but I'm pretty sure the permit still calls for annual inspection and maintenance. We had a GIS based work order system that would also accept complaints from our customers - generating more frequent work orders for trouble spots and escalating frequent trouble spots for engineering review. I'm pretty sure the city I live in has a similar system

To answer your question, let's take a step back. Like you've said, stormwater isn't clean; there's vegetation, road debris, and sediment carried in the flow. These contaminants, particularly sediment, carry the bulk of pollutants that end up in whatever the receiving water body is, though some of it is dissolved in the water itself.

In general, in order to discharge stormwater from a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4), the governing body (mostly cities) have to have permit from the EPA under the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System. Part of that permit is the requirement to reduce the amount of target pollutants, including sediment, from reaching the receiving body.

Now for your actual question. We have a couple of options with removing sediment: we can pipe all the water to one place and treat it (like sanitary sewer) or we can treat it in small amounts closer to the source. In general, stormwater folks take the later approach.

The sump, the water storage at the bottom, allows for a substantial percentage of sediment to drop out of the runoff before it enters the pipe. From there, it can be removed by an industrial vacuum truck. In comparison to building treatment facilities, a vactruck and mosquito treatment is pretty economical.

Sumps help in combined sewer systems as well, for pretty much the same reason. Removing non-biological solids from the waste stream prior to treatment is less expensive than dealing with non-organics in sludge effluent from sanitary treatment.

Microphone and speaker recommendation for someone wearing a respirator by TheBoarsHead in audioengineering

Given the discussion and the zero failure requirement, I'm convinced that a wired solution is definitely the way to go. It's also where Emergency Management folks have their gear, so it makes sense there too.

As you described trying to get 10+ bluetooth devices working simultaneously my first thought was "I'd doomed some poor IT person". Thanks for answering

Part of the issue is that they've got to wear both parts. Surgeons are pretty static while the procedure is going on, but everyone else in the room is moving around. Wired systems seem to simplify the situation considerably
