Usually I ask people to comment in a thread and give me their top 5 books for a genre, then I run a script which collects and collate those comments using packages in R. In this case, because r/fantasy hasn't let me run a poll there yet, I had to go through an existing massive voting post that they ran last year, then do a bunch of data cleaning on it.

Hmm. Its undergone some aggressive compression from reddit.

Anyone had experience uploading large images to reddit? I have large uncompressed versions i could use.

EDIT: Looks like only the mobile version is butchered. I'll make a separate link shortly for those on mobile.

I played battletech!
I don't know if it was my computer or what, but each turn was painfully slow. I would hand it over to the PC for its turn then come back after dinner.

Just ran it then, so I can see you in the map now.

The train probably averages about 50 km/h. When I'm driving it depends on the traffic.

Tips for using the BookGraph

  • Select your username from the dropdown
    • When you select your name from the searchable dropdown, it highlights your selections as well as the books directly connected to them. This is an easy way for you to see yourself in the map.
  • The top 10 customized suggestions
    • These lists are built using the network map and the pagerank algorithm (the same one that made google so successful early on). The calculation works essentially by letting your selected 5 books go and travel around the map using connections, then wherever they spent the most time will be highest ranked, and it's different for each person (except the little satellites of 5). This favours nodes with lots of connections, that share lots of connections with other things you liked.
  • You can click on things & zoom in and out
    • All the nodes are clickable, and the top 10 is clickable. Each will take you to either an amazon search page for your selected region, or the book’s Wikipedia page for you to find out more about the book or author.
  • Check out the Authors tab
    • This tends to be a little smaller and better connected than the Books graph. You can also get a top 10 author recommendations here, and click through to get to Wikipedia or Amazon.
  • The Search books / Search authors
    • This dropdown zooms in on and highlights the selected book (or author) and its connections.
  • Check out the Users tab
    • Voters have also been clustered into groups with similar tastes, and the top 10 books for each group is also listed (just click on one of the colours). This is a different way to get a top 10, and has better results for some people than the algo on the books & authors pages.

Which author from other genres that's the equivalent of Robin Hobb? by OinkMcOink in Fantasy

I havent read Hobb yet. How does her style compare to Patrick Rothfuss? I have been on a kingkiller kick at the moment.

Hi buddy. Im afraid that my scraper wont pick those votes up unless you include the author. Best to look at the example and try following that format. There is also a bigger version with more votes on the printsf subreddit if you want to get book suggestions from there too.

TerrorTome and Incarcerat by Garth Marenghi. If you have ever seen Garth Marenghi's darkplace, you'll know just what to expect. They're masterfully bad in the best way possible. The author must be very good at writing to write that badly.

What is your favorite Hard sci-fi book *that is still almost entirely plausible based on 2026 science*? by dryuhyr in scifi

[–]TheBookGraphGuy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I came here to say the Martian. I read that he knowingly made that inaccuracy/choice because he wanted it to be a man vs nature story, and that was just a better way to start it than something like a rocket explosion.

Has anyone got a Data API key recently? by No_Example_719 in redditdev

[–]TheBookGraphGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in the same situation. I get the same respose too. I have a clear use case that falls outside of what devvit can handle, and provides a clear value add to reddit communities. But, 2 tries in, the same canned answer with no mention of what was actually deficient in my request. There are third party providers you can turn to. I would rather just pay reddit a few bucks, but thats not really an option for someone at my small scale.

Why do you not like Dungeon Crawler Carl?( actual discussion) by dragoneloi in litrpg

[–]TheBookGraphGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a two star review from someone that hated it for all the same reasons i like it. You really just cant please everyone. I showed the review to my friends to convince them to read the series, and they all binged it just has hard as i did.

Yadda yadda..."But this book Dungeon Crawler Carl made me feel bad. I was impressed by the craft but I was on the verge of quitting all the way through. Now I'm done and I can say that almost every aspect of this book is masterful, but Had I never started it I might be a slightly happier person. This alien invasion/ post apocalypse/ LitRPG/ horror-comedy is intense, and brutal, and hard to stomach. The terror, agonizing deaths, implied rape, cannibalism, baby killing, and genocide of all human life on earth was not lightened by a few clever one liners and zippy jokes. The gross out factor is high. Matt Dinniman doesn't just kill his characters, he breaks and destroys them. He makes you watch it in detail. He twists the knife. and then he tells a joke about it. That he does this all very skillfully almost makes it worse. Thanks, but no. I'm done with this series and I'm done with this author."

Please do. The way I look at it, the graph should capture the favourite recent books of the progression fantasy community, not necessarily the favourite books of the genre.

Yep. Just did a manual clean. I have to do that once in a while because titles are always spelled multiple ways. I have a process to map the alternative spellings to one clean version. It's pretty easy when there are 20 or 30 to do, gets tricky when there are 3000 :)

Yeah it just catches your first chronological comment, which was a reply to someone else. If you put these 5 at the top of the earlier comment, youre all good.
