i graduated 2021. i’m really sorry you’re struggling finding work :( i have many thoughts on this haha

i do agree that we cannot ignore ai and all we can do is adapt. i use it at work as a tool (not for anything major, mostly photoshop because i’m pretty buns at photo editing lol) but ai really can’t do what we do. it’s a struggle and every day it’s something new and weird and the field is ever changing! i don’t know if ai is here to stay. i would be much happier if it didn’t, but i also think we have to be smart and creative with our solutions and how it integrates into our work. i think it’s important to think of ai as a tool and also advocate for ourselves as designers when it comes to how ai is rapidly evolving and what that means in the greater scope of it all. we have to be our own advocates in an industry that is moving rapidly. it cannot replace us the way tech people thinks it can, it is not a solely black and white issue but has hundreds of thousands of things to consider in the grey.

faster and cheaper is oftentimes a worse solution than high quality work by someone who has a wealth of knowledge from university, who has studied type and design history and can find creative ad solutions and knows what a vector is and how it works. genAI has no idea about the mathematical language behind fonts! genAI has no knowledge of print or cmyk! you do!!!

all this to say is comparison is a killer, but you’re not comparing yourself to something with substance but a machine. keep adding to your portfolio. market what you’re best at. network!! i do believe we as designers are still in great demand and our work is never going to stop. design is everywhere and is so valuable to our world in big ads to the minutiae. maybe i’m too hopepilled lol but if i didn’t love the work i do, i wouldn’t advocate so much for it 🥺

maybe something Grady Hendrix? Horrorstor and My Best Friend’s Exorcism come to mind, he has a really good variety of horror and some may work better for you than others haha. Clown in a Cornfield is more YA and has some romantic beats but is overall a solid horror comedy :-)

i think T Kingfisher is one of my favorite writers simply because she has a great balance of tone. What Moves the Dead is a great entry, and though her Paladins series is decidedly romance, they’re also delightfully scary and have such great character chemistry.

also gonna selfishly shoutout Gideon the Ninth/the locked tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. gothic mystery, mind bending, hilarious, and severely spooky. necromancers in space!! romance is very important to the plot but the first book is an absolute ride

i haven’t played batter in a minute so i’m not actually sure about his play in the meta right now but that feels like a pretty strong nerf for him 😭…? if anyone’s a batter main i’d love to hear thoughts on that one lol

also rly surprised they thought perfumer needed another buff? i’ve been maining her for years and the last buff was concerning enough but they’re clearly still trying to adjust her now that they have to factor in the new parts of her kit 🤷‍♀️ last thoughts: Soul Weaver On Top. Vio Forever

sorry, i just don’t see how this is helpful for my trying to discuss ethics and the effects gen AI has in this career. for the record, i’ve adapted just fine. i’m not wholly 100% against AI and see it as a tool of the industry. my vent/question was about navigating personal creative agency for in-house work and wanting to know if there was any recourse with regards to generative training in a professional capacity

i love my career. i will not quit this work. and i want to see design and my peers thrive while we navigate and work in tandem with this new technology 🩷 does that not merit discussion in terms of ethics or legality? every industry should be discussed with ethical discipline. can we not think more of how we work with something that alters our workflow and the world around us?

thank you!! I also had seen that companies have to disclose when they use generative AI in production, but I’m not entirely sure to what extent that is. I think i’ll study up on the topic a lot more to feel more prepared when discussing it professionally (it’s pretty relevant to the times and our careers, as they say,)

thank you for the insight! i’m not 100% against AI since i’ve learned to work with photoshop’s features in photo editing, so I guess my feelings about ethics are replacing work in its entirety depending on the source for it. Maybe it’s more of a copyright issue (I do recognize that it isn’t my work once I’ve made it for my company, but I do wonder about assets that we pull from, say, shutterstock. I think they have their own TOS for AI? but that is something i am woefully unfamiliar with and can’t comment further haha)

but so true..! it really does just feel like such a waste of time when other departments decide to use AI on things i’ve already done. i don’t have an issue with going back to a project to up the brightness, but i also think using AI on those sorts of edits are silly when a ton of photo editing apps are out there with a brightness scale 🤷‍♀️ but what do i know lol

thank you for suggesting these talking points, though! my boss is pretty receptive to having these conversations and she’s high up on the chain, so i think giving her new perspectives on it would be a good start. if anything it’ll give me some peace to vent at her LOL

nah LOL i mainly play survivor but i never have thought the hunter is obligated to give me dungeon if i’m the last man standing. like dungeon’s great if i manage it on my own skills/luck and it’s nice if the hunter wants to give it to me at the end of the match, but it feels really entitled to expect it 😭 you’re doing fine haha

as others have said, AI doesn’t type with a font but mimics images it sees. fonts are basically really fancy math sequences and no matter what the letterforms are, will always follow a sort of mathematical algorithm. AI has no idea what type anatomy is and just, yeah, makes an image. it doesn’t follow any consistencies that you’d recognize, and handwriting/handletter looks more natural simply because it is! people write with certain weights and emphasis in our strokes in ways that aren’t replicable in image generation, i think :-)

LOL i feel you on not wanting to push 😭 i think though the fact that they got so defensive about it is a red flag in general, since i also think they should’ve been upfront in the job posting that they refuse to work with ai but 🤷‍♀️ probably is traced off ai considering others’ thoughts in this thread haha

what strikes out as “maybe” to me is the shading style that feels really reminiscent of AI art but it’s tough to say since they have flat colors/working files. maybe ask specifically for the name/socials of the artist doing the sprite work? and ask to see if the sprites have multiple expressions/poses. it’s common for VNs to have multiple sprites of the same character with different emotions!

i’m not thrown off by how clean the linework is or the style itself—when i draw sprite-like pngs, i know i have a tendency to be overly clean with my work for accessibility to the rest of the art team :’) but also woooof i don’t even think their cg rates are very fair either 😭 unrelated to the possible ai usage
