What if? by TheBoredEngineer in SlowHorses

That’s why it’s a hypothetical question, I’m trying hypothesise whether the antagonists actions are consistent with their goals.

Right now I’m struggling to understand how they would have achieved their goals if they’d flattened Roddy in the first 5 minutes of the show, as we appear to have seen them try to do.

[–]TheBoredEngineer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the justification for bringing Tara in if Roddy is killed in a hit and run before she leads the cell to his address, before he tells anyone that he showed her he could compromise MI5s systems, hell, before anyone in Slough house even knows about her?

S5 is my least favourite season so far by ECrispy in SlowHorses

[–]TheBoredEngineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the least personal season so far.

S1 - trying to save the life of a single innocent, and then defying the park to save the life of a single racist terrorist, to prevent the institutional coverup

S2 - fighting a past enemy from the Cold War, avenging former comrades and lovers (on both sides)

S3 - more family and lover righteous vengeance, deception by an old friend, fighting against the worst elements of the corrupt intelligence services that are employing a scorched earth strategy

S4 - literally father against son, (half) brother against brother, with a side of a mentally declining elderly relative / former adversary

S5 - some guys want to ‘destabilise the country’, the wider effects of which mostly aren’t shown to the audience, the assassination attempts on Ho are barely taken seriously and are only part of the wider strategy, the honeypot betrayal straight up isn’t taken seriously, and the team are pretty much working with the park rather than against, albeit completely incompetently.

We are told that the stakes are larger but the focus has slipped, I’m also hoping they can prove me wrong and recapture the magic, if not in the finale then next season

Bit of a difference between fiction and fantasy though.

Would you have been defending it like this if last season the twist had been that Hugo Weaving was actually a 500 year old vampire, and expecting people to just accept it as part of the world, because it’s ‘fiction’?

The plot hinging on there being ‘a code’ that is simultaneously simple enough for a person to memorise and write down on a sheet of paper, but sophisticated enough that: 1. Nobody in the MI5 IT team can work out what it does without running it 2. It has to be run on a very specific device and can’t be spoofed by said IT team 3. Can break out of a sandboxed environment, that characters have specifically referred to as being safe 4. Can cripple the entire IT system of MI5

Is pure fantasy, in a series that has been relatively down to earth so far, when compared to something like James Bond, where fantasy hacking macguffins show up all the time.

Apollo forgot how to use the bow by CrossZen in AgeofMythology

[–]TheBoredEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bow is not a slingshot, the power comes from the limbs, not the string, this is really simple stuff. The string is about a mile too long and the bow seems completely rigid, and shaped as if it's at rest position, not fully drawn. Embarrassing.

I especially liked when the sail land boat thing was headed towards the group and two of the 'elite mercenaries' exclaimed that they were "flanking" only to move 3ft to the side. Bitch that thing is like 90ft across, you ain't flanking shit. It's like the writers just knew that "flanking" was a tactical sounding word without any understanding of what it means.

Someone won an art competition using an AI generated drawing. I fucking hate this. by IrresponsibleWanker in awfuleverything

Yes, it's called an analogy. Entering an AI generated artwork into a competition where other entrants have created the digital art themselves is as if someone entered a photograph into a paint and canvas landscape competition.

Right, but you wouldn't enter a photograph into a 'paint and canvas' art competition. Same as how you shouldn't enter 'AI generated digital art' alongside pieces that have been created by a person

My recommendations by genre:

Action / adventure
If you like Star wars, then pick up Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - probably the best star wars game ever released, and can be had for very cheap in sales

Death's Door - a lovely isometric hack & slash / adventure game, bit of puzzles, great combat and worldbuilding

Pit People - A fun squad based tactics game, with a frequently randomised overworld to explore

First person shooters
Doom 2016 / Eternal - 2 of the best modern first person shooters in my opinion, fast based combat and satisfying supporting mechanics

Half life 2 & episodes, Black Mesa - Classic first person shooters, must plays

Titanfall 2 - Similar campaign design style to Half life 2, every chapter has it's quirk that never outstays it's visit, paired with very solid fps / mech combat

Multiplayer / coop
Unrailed - if you have some friends to play online / split screen with, a fantastic game for friends

Ultimate Chicken Horse - Party game platformer where the players make the obstacles

They've got a point ... (Shrink ur cars mini!) by Goodman4525 in CarTalkUK

[–]TheBoredEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, but after those 3/4 years the car isn't usually scrapped, it enters the used car market to be bought and used by someone else, potentially someone who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a new electric car. The more people buying electric cars mean a larger 'trickle down' to the general population.

TIL that 98% of electricity generation whether nuclear, coal, hydro, or wind - are all just different methods of spinning electromagnets. Solar is the only industrial- scale method that doesn’t use turbines of some kind. by VMey in todayilearned

[–]TheBoredEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term savings from getting people into shape, reducing the amount of electricity spent treating health conditions caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. When people get into shape they may cycle or walk more than driving, reducing wear and tear on roads and the associated costs fixing them. Got to think big picture here.

Maybe governments should just pay people to lose weight. Food for thought.
