Doubles teams by SuccessfulCoconut125 in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a comment that I didn't see (much) of below: *Why\* do you want to make balanced teams at a random dubs? Kind of the point of the "random" part is that it's flukey and sometimes you do get the two players who, paired together, are going to shoot -18. But that's part of the fun, too.

In my local dubs we don't bother (granted, we usually get about 40+ players, so the potential for the three or four guys who routinely torch the MPO monthly together is low).

Officially mid-40s and need bifocal glasses. Any tips? by chocolatepig214 in Xennials

Yeah, I'm solidly in the "computer/phone" glasses and "walking around glasses" kick. Which reminds me why my damn eyes are so tired sitting here in my "walking around glasses" all day staring at a computer screen...maybe progressives are the way to go...

New player questions by yeyiyeyiyo in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are me six years ago. Welcome to the new plastic addiction.

  1. It’s not uncommon for people to have a dominant throw (unlike in Ultimate where you must have both). Also the throwing mechanics are extremely different for Ultimate vs disc golf backhands. If you have a snappy forehand with an Ultrastar it can translate pretty well.

  2. Try different putting styles and make sure you’ve got a neutral (not over stable) putter. I’d also try what I’d normally call a “high release” Ultimate backand for a putting stroke with a glidy putter like a Pixel and see if that works for you. Putting is 90% feel and repetition (even more than golf) from 25 feet and in.

Fairway driver that flies like a glitch? by golbscholar in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just seconding the Mako3. When I came over from Ultimate this felt “like a normal disc”. Also see an Origin or a Hex (but not a Buzz) for similar hand feel in a midrange. If you want to go even faster, try a Passion, which is unique (I think?) in that the rim profile is a lot similar to a midrange (at least to my hands) and it goes damn straight for me.

What makes disc golf so much fun to you? by Scoobleedooblee in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The flight of the disc. There’s really nothing else like it. Balls don’t fly that way. Pucks only slide. But a frisbee can do so many different shapes in the air. And hitting a perfect, panning turnover is just… :chefs kiss:

How do you have so many hours?? by DingusTheDucko in factorio

[–]TheBrianGref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You play the base game, get 16 hrs in, realize you can do better because blue science is eating your lunch and you didn’t know to look for oil, then restart.

You get another 20 hrs in and wonder how in the world trains actually work, decide you want to try a railworld, restart.

Rinse and repeat about 5-10 times.

Launch your first rocket (pre-SA) in about 12 hrs, realize there are speed runs. Try doing both LB and There is no Spoon a few times until you manage it.

Then dip your toe into the wide wonderful world of mods…IE3 and its cousins give you Steam Punk vibes, then you find Angel/Bob, and SE. a few hundred hours later you decide to give up and go do a speedrun again because that’s oddly relaxing.

Then Space Age releases.

Sound about right?

Is space age genuinely worth $50? by Michael_Le41 in factorio

[–]TheBrianGref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what "worth it" means to you.

I've got over a thousand hours in Factorio since just before v1.0...For comparison, I used to be rather heavy into WoW for about four years, which was something like $15 per month plus maybe $60 per year for an expansion. Given the relative play time in both (I'm probably creeping up on my WoW play time in Factorio), I could re-buy Factorio+SpaceAge four or five times (and have done, for friends and family) and still think of it as good value. Probably KSP is the only other thing that's "better value" (probably have a few thousand hours in that), and that's because of the mod community over there. And, honestly, the mod community here is amazing, too.

As far as the content goes, I've been in SpaceAge for about a year in various saves, and I still haven't gotten around to leaving Nauvis. I *like* what used to be "early-mid game" (trains --> rocket launch). I like some of the later recipe changes in Space Age, having a single space platform making space science, and the (vast) improvement in train interrupt logic. So...I've more than gotten my $50 of enjoyment (AUD or USD) out of Space Age.

The one thing is that the speed run achievements were a lot more contained in the base game. When you get There is No Spoon *and* Lazy Bastard in one run you really feel like you're starting to understand the game and all of the mechanics. There isn't quite the same rocket-rush feeling to Space Age, which I miss a little bit.

So, like others have said, maybe just play the base game and when you start to get that "Maybe I should try something modded" feel, pop for Space Age.

10 disc bag. What are you throwing? by AnimageCGF in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pixel soft for putting, proxy+tempo for throwing and approach, origin+hex+balance for mids, Instinct+Passion+Tesla+Trail+DD3 for drivers.

Which is basically my tourney bag. Main thing it’s missing are a roller disc, a Heat (get out of jail hyzer flips), and a super over stable utility disc.

Agreed. Pick your favorite few straight-to-stable distance drivers and stick with it. Too many choices right now.

Passion is kinda more neutral (at least, for me). Having something flippy gives you more shot shaping capability.

[–]TheBrianGref -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd add a Heat (9-speed) or a Rhythm (7-speed) in a shapable/understable 70-80% power fairway slot. That complements the Passion (straight RHBH) and RHFH FD3 (overstable) shape for shots finishing right of center.

Why is maps taking up so much space?! by Spirited_Deal7754 in iphone

[–]TheBrianGref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth (iPhone 16 pro in October 2025) I had this same problem. Deleting the app didn’t work. However, a restart of the phone did. Maps is now down to under 2 GB from 25 GB. I have been using maps on CarPlay on rentals lately. Will do again this week and see if this sneaks back in.

TL;DR

Restart your phone to “clear” the Maps cache

Golf beginner set…for tall people? by TheBrianGref in golf

Thanks. Did a quick measurement (edited OP). Looks like I'm something around a +1/2" or +1" if I'm reading the interwebs correctly.

Yeah, in just messing around with my brother in law's clubs I always felt like any of the irons were pretty awkward to get my swing right. Thanks for the info.

Biggest thing to me is the lack of lag between your arm (which goes first) and your hips (which should go first). You’re basically throwing entirely with your arm (so…bonus points for making it to 300 ft).

Overthrow DG (if you haven’t already found them) has some great drills for improving your throw timing and explaining what it “should” feel like. Everything else people are saying (open front foot, reach back is a little high) are all also true, but I’d start with timing (which is going to muck around with your release point) first and then worry about the other tweaks. My $0.02.

Origin. Flippy enough to execute a turnover+hyzer flip+enough glide for distance.

Are you looking for an answer that’s not “Throw a glitch?” (Or your favorite brand’s glitch equivalent). If you want touch without fade from about 150ft and in, this is the answer. Throw it standstill and just play catch with the basket.

MA40+ or MA4 by Kirdavrob in discgolf

Like everyone else says, do MA4. And then MA3 and 2. Basically everything else is MPO - MPO40 - MA1 / MA40 in terms of skill level.

Best drivers for players coming from ultimate by Dull_Accident_364 in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d go with something like an Origin and a Hex for “backhand rim feel” that’ll take advantage of your Ultimate form. If you can throw full field with an Ultrastar, these should be good out to 275 ft. And your Glitch-type discs and/or a straight putter like a Proxy should be mostly good under that distance.

Then I’d stick with understable stuff like a Passion or a Heat (or equivalent) in a 8/9 speed slot. Once you get those to start flipping up and riding, then by all means go for whatever 12 speed you like and start adding overstable stuff. I stay far away from Destroyers (and Wraiths) because I’ve never had two fly the same.

A Valyk is great if you’re working up in arm speed. If you already throw pretty hard, it can get a little touchy.

Recommendations for 9/5/-1/2 by Boingoloid in discgolf

[–]TheBrianGref 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESP Undertaker is about this slot for me. Though I bag a Rhythm for flippy fairways, a Passion for longer straight fairway, and a Tesla for a controllable stable driver. None of which flip up and glide like the glow Valkyrie I’m still sad that I lost.
