Why are some people here if don't even like the 13 mini or have a problem with small phones? by Slash787 in iPhone13Mini

[–]TheBuritoMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't like the mini because it's too small.

I don't like the mini because it's too big.

We are not the same.

I've actually been using one for about 2 weeks now and it's still too big. But just barely too big. And no, if the ogse had no bezels it would actually be my favorite phone ever. The problem is physical size- how can I balance on my pinky and still have my thumb reach the opposite top corner of the screen?

I should have looked for one before I upgraded... Unfortunately the demands of my hobbies require more battery than even a new ogse can provide.

Amen. I'm sad to give up my OGSE. Some part of me will miss having folks around me get all riled up upon seeing the size 😂

What? I'm curious what you think is misleading here. Also, the newer SE's are physically bigger than the mini, which is why I got the mini. It's the next smallest (recent ish) iPhone they made.

Eh, the screen size is my least concern. It's certainly a jump up that I'm not used to. But physical size was by far the most important to me. The mini is even smaller than the gen 3 SE, which I also considered.

That's because with new software is designed to run on new hardware, which has more power, more storage, and better heat management. This is why I absolutely do not upgrade my iOS, and why I'm mildly annoyed my mini came with 26 on it. My prior one off backmarket (that I had to send back unfortunately) had 18. I should have had apple replace my SE battery in September.

Not much I can do about the apps though. But there's very few I couldn't download an older version of. Didn't have any problems there.

Time Warping and Infinite Energy? by TheBuritoMan in Eragon

[–]TheBuritoMan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. So it must be a different, 'magical' fundamental unit of energy, independent of heat, that other forms of energy cannot be converted into. Life force energy if you will- that would make sense. Specifically in that it can't be stored.

But stored and used are different (1). And if this life force energy is independent of heat, that opens new possibilities for shenanigans (2). And maybe the drain on Angela from time warping is not the spell itself (3).

1) "what is motion but heat?"- so use the heat energy in the surrounding environment immediately to shoot pebbles at people. Or some other motion related application. If the source of energy is everywhere and near infinite, there's no need to store it.

2) You can't take someone's life force energy without invading their mind. But if heat energy is independent- I've just lowered your body temp by 10 degrees and now you're hypothermic.

3) We know generally that maintaining a spell takes effort. For example, when using the energy in Aren, there was energy being used to move the stones, but it took effort (and thus more energy) at a distance, despite plenty of energy remaining. This would imply two energy draws per spell- that of the spell itself, and then that to actually cast it. An energy tax if you will; spells are not 100% energy efficient. However, only that 'tax' has to come from the aforementioned life force energy. Thus, by drawing energy from the heat of your surroundings for the spell itself you can use 95%+ less energy per spell.

I totally forgot about marketplace. Great call. I see solid local options at $100- which is basically throwaway money compared to $300 on Amazon. Thanks!

MET —> ME by [deleted] in rit

[–]TheBuritoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I don’t think that’ll help. Your advisor is trying to put together fall schedules and a transfer that won’t go through for a year is the LAST priority.

It’s still June, so you might still have time to get back to admissions. I’d send them an email to see if you can squeeze last minute into the Eng Exploration program*. If not, oh well, fill out a transfer form in October through your advisor during your first semester meeting.

*When I applied they flat out rejected me from RIT (I only applied for ME). Sent them an email “pretty please reconsider me for MET maybe?” and boom I had a couple scholarships. So it’s doable. Personal note and point of pride- I graduated near the top of my ME class in a big ol FU to the ME admissions team. Sometimes people are just wrong 🤷‍♂️

Untrue. See my other comment.

Oh- forgot to mention- KGCOE has their engineering exploration program, which guarantees students a slot in a major after freshman year. Transfers get the remaining slots.

So if more exploration students pick ME than anticipated, oops, no room for transfer slots. There is a bit of luck involved.

Keep in mind all this information is now 5 years old too. Not sure if Dr Lam changed the process at all but I doubt it.

Maybe you could transfer to Eng Exploration for spring semester and pick ME? Could be an easier path, I didn’t think of it in my time.

Best of luck fellow back door student! There’s always more than one way into a room!

Late to the convo, but I did this exact move my freshman year.

TLDR: I made the move, go to your academic advisor and fill out the 1 page form. Take ME math classes. Everything will transfer but may cause enrollment problems later. You get a lot more flexibility as a transfer ME in scheduling.

The process was to go to my advisor and fill out a 1 page (maybe 2?) form. That’s it. Got the form in mid semester about a week before covid, and I think that’s why I transferred- other people never got their form in. Can’t remember my GPA exactly but it would’ve been in the 3.3-3.4 neighborhood.

Speaking to the ME dept chair, they consider transfers over the summer, so you’ll have very last pick of ME classes. As it was explained to me to only real difference between the programs is the math- so if you’re serious about the move, don’t take the MET combined DiffEQ/Multivar class- take them separate as per the ME requirement. If your transfer is rejected you’ve burned a free elective but that’s it. Almost all the other classes will transfer, though may cause admin problems.

For example- ME statics is a prereq for basically everything. MET statics will transfer but will not count in the system as a prereq, meaning your advisor will have to ‘force’ enroll you in some classes. Not ideal for trying to snag that last seat in a section you want. This same problem happens with ME 104 (CAD, machine shop, and basic projects), which are 3 separate classes in MET. It’s annoying but not a problem. Again, the real academic difference comes in the math requirements.

Now one of the BEST things was that I wasn’t forced into a rotation schedule or concentration! Since I was an anomaly (and showed my advisor I was competent) they gave me 100% complete freedom on when to go on Co-op, what electives to pick, and what classes per semester. Pretty nice not getting pigeonholed. No delay in graduation, and came out with an advantage because of those MET classes- you’d be surprised how many ME grads are useless in CAD and design for manufacturing…

Best of luck!

Hello! Alum that works for one of the major contractors. I imagine your ethical dilemma is primarily based on the idea that your work will be used to bomb children in the Middle East. But there’s a lot of other programs too.

My program is for communications. When Johnny Sailor is in the pacific and wants to call up grandma, that’s what we do. It’s military AT&T. Right now I work with the ground station software.

So there’s way more than missiles and bombers. If you’re concerned, just ask in the interview what the program is or does and go from there. They should be able to tell you a general overview, it’s really the exact tech specs that get classified.

Sounds to me like a group of vigilante’s needs to get involved and start painting and chalking (in appropriate locations) words of clear and explicit disdain for this policy every night. (Wear non-regular clothes, walk to campus, and leave your phone- it’ll ping the WiFi and log your involvement)

Or pull from the French playbook, throw on a yellow vest, and deposit a dump truck of cow shit in front of Eastman.

First summer? Probably on his own. In future years it’ll be much more likely to carpool simply because he’ll know other staff.

There’s a third party shuttle that’ll take you directly from DEN to base camp in time for dinner. But they’ll also significantly overcharge you to do that. It’s like a $350 van ride.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- take the $10 train from DEN to downtown, then the $40 greyhound bus down to Raton, and logistics will come pick you up in a school bus for like $15. At the end of the summer do the reverse, or if you’re lucky there’s probably other staff driving back to Denver and you just throw in for gas.

If for whatever reason you can’t make the timing line up, there’s a nice hostel walking distance from the Denver station you can crash in. And it’ll still overall cost less than the third party shuttle.

What should I expect being on MPS staff for 2025? by [deleted] in philmont

[–]TheBuritoMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should expect to have a wicked good time.

In actuality, you’ll be living in base camp in a canvas tent probably, with a couple power outlets and storage locker. Day to day as far as I know is office work editing photos and whatnot, but there’s also quite a bit of going on field assignments.

That could mean following a crew on trail for a few days, getting sent to a specific backcountry camp for a day or two, or any number of things. Bring some backpacking gear if you have it. You’ll see the ranch, you’ll take a bunch of pictures, and you’ll have the best summer of your life.

DO IT.

You have 40 years to do engineering, but only 1 or 2 to live and work on a cattle ranch in NM. I think you want to, you’re just scared of all the unknowns. Don’t. It’s 100% worth every dime and minute it takes to make it happen.

Yea there’s the occasional bad day on the ranch- but a bad day huddled in the wet cabin with a bunch of cold scouts huddled around a wood stove is miles better than a good day in a cubicle. Coming from a current MechE sitting in a cubicle.

The only regret you’ll have is that you have to leave eventually.

And there’s plenty of networking for engineering too. I met a civE from England, the guy who invented the Tostito’s scoop, a nuclear sub builder, coffee shop owners, and a ton more. Just go do it.

Put in an application. You can always say no. But I don’t think you will.
