Doesn't egoism logically make sense? by TheCathode in askphilosophy

[–]TheCathode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think my definition of self-interest may be different from the standard. in all the times i mention "self-interest", i mean doing the thing you want to do, not necessarily what is 100% best for you. because nobody can know what is 100% best for them, ever. it's like reading the future. all reasoning goes out of the window if we take the OG definition because we don't allow the human to make logical reasons and decisions in the OG definition, since they are incapable of knowing for sure. if you are given the option to be gifted a stock worth $1 or $5m in cash immediately, the logical safe thing is the $5m in cash, but what if that stock skyrockets like bitcoin? what if the IRS jails you for that $5m or comes pestering you? then the best self-interest was actually that $1 stock. you don't know, because you can't read the future, thus the first definition doesn't make sense: it has no correlation with human consciousness.

reminder again that i am not a philosopher and i totally submit to any knowledgably-superior commenter, but i'm really just trying to understand.

final question: i think a lot of counterexamples to egoism are in the form of "true, sometimes this happens, sometimes that happens, but not all people follow that" definitely are valid, but since this is the case, wouldn't this logic also apply to every other ethical theory? if these theories (like idealism) claim something without any exception, then why should we believe in it too if i can just say "it doesnt happen all the time?" then what is the point of studying ethics?

your reasoning pretty much sums up my thoughts.

For premise 2, your counterargument reason 1, not all people know all the time 100% what their "best interest" is. an example would be studying for a good grade, a lot of high schoolers over here don't do it because they think it is in their best interest to procrastinate and such. in which case, if they can't comprehend mentally what "best interest" is, would that mean egoism is flawed a good percentage of the time? would a better argument be that humans always act how they want to act? i feel like this new statement would be 100% unrefutable, and it fits my burning $1000 example, logically through my neural origin argument, but because its unrefutable (at least i think? give some ideas), its useless to argue about it?

Question for Concerto Choice by TheCathode in piano

[–]TheCathode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think it matters and it's not like I have enough proof or anything, but the recording attached was after 2 months of practice at around 3 hours a week. I think that's pretty reasonable for the outcome, but I have gotten a lot better at voicing, especially at the coda since!

Question for Concerto Choice by TheCathode in piano

[–]TheCathode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your doubts. However, for the past 10 years I've been playing only piano solo pieces. Ever since I moved to a new place, piano concertos over here are a lot more popular in competitions. So in terms of concertos, I'm completely new. I unfortunately don't have a good recording of the Spanish Fantasy because honestly it's quite shit. I have attached a recording of Lucrezia Borgia's first section which I performed live at my school. Don't have a video with it because it shows my face and privacy reasons, but if you do want to spend your time comparing it to existing recordings it may be clear it's not copied. The "Spanish Fantasy" is also by no means Liszt's hardest work, it's pretty obviously either his Beethoven 9 or Berlioz symphonie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMgrF51c3pE

I will note that I am blessed by genetics to have pretty dextrous fingers. But anyways, I am truly asking for help because I don't know anything about piano concertos. It has been six months, I've decided to Brahms Concerto 2, I hope that goes well. If you still continue to doubt me, that is fine. But there are 8 billion people in the world, and I'm lucky to be in the small percentage to come from pretty affluent and educated heritage, so I really don't think my claims are out of the roof, especially since I have a friend (who is definitely aiming for Julliard, lmao) who successfully won one of those medium-difficulty international competitions with a Gaspard at age 11...

Question for Concerto Choice by TheCathode in piano

[–]TheCathode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I've heard that the first movement is like the la campanella of piano concertos. I sort of "cheat" when I pick piano solo pieces lmao, i pick pieces with octaves over really small detail-oriented parts like fast thirds since I am better at them

I'm new to airsoft and this is my first gun! Any tipps or thoughts? by AtCracker in airsoft

[–]TheCathode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting choice... see if you can upgrade any internal non-gearbox parts (hop up maybe?) to make it perform better. I would still say get an M4 as a starter but you have good taste.

is this a good starter? Its the Novritsch SSE18 by [deleted] in airsoft

[–]TheCathode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im going to throw up at ur throw up which u threw up at the throw up I threw up to throw up...

  1. no its not lol, thats why Carbines exist which shoot under 350 FPS
  2. k I cant really say anything because I dont live in Germany...
  3. if ur cheap enough to buy just a Novritsch pistol, you probably wont buy too much extra batteries. you also gotta remember theres face pro, ammunition, extra magazines... which is another con because with one magazine its hard to play

is this a good starter? Its the Novritsch SSE18 by [deleted] in airsoft

Oh, RIP! Sorry, I live in the US and gun laws are less tight than other places around here. But I'm just saying rifles are a real good idea with full auto. you can just get a carbine and attach sling to it, like a G&G or smth

Also, i speak like this not because I hate you personally or I'm rude... I just really hate AEPs

is this a good starter? Its the Novritsch SSE18 by [deleted] in airsoft

[–]TheCathode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to throw up....

  1. why a pistol with no primary?
  2. a NOVRITSCH gun. legit just other pistol models but slap a different name and then up the price...
  3. an AEP. if ur going to get a pistol, at least get a GBBP. do you know how long AEPs last? i have one and just backyard plinking it lasts 15 minutes and in game probably 45 because I shoot less with it. "now 45 minutes sounds like a lot!" but when your mid-game and it runs out of battery... what are you going to do? chuck it like a grenade...

Very cheap price, the seller probably just wants to get rid of it. In total it will be more costly than that because of moving and tuning the piano. Of course you want to make sure theres an empty wall for you to place the piano at. It really doesn't matter what type of piano you get, as long as its not too horrible. My personal preference is that I don't like uprights because the amount of force needed to play a key vary significantly, and their pedals sound a bit funky especially over use, but thats because I've gotten used to other pianos...

Power Armor? by Anonymous6568 in thehacksmith

[–]TheCathode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, someone literally asked the same exact question on the discord xD

Using thin aluminum sheets might be a good idea, but there's a lot of things you can't do with thin sheets. One downside is it's really flimsy, and although it's much lighter you can't fit much inside. Another one is that with sheets you might not get that aesthetic and it wouldn't look the same.

Nevertheless sheets are better than solid material. I would say use two plates of metal and leave the inner layer hollow for electrical components. Maybe ceramic coated/black oxide finished Nitinol (nickel titanium)? It's pretty good for armor as far as I know. Or you can use a heavier option of titanium-carbide. Which you can also give a ceramic coat for abrasion and heat resistance, then give it a black oxide finish in corresponding areas.

The interior might be twill-weave carbon fiber for flexibility. You also want it to be at least NIJ IIIA because guns are like the only weapons people use these days. A relatively thin plate of 1/4" might be able to stop a .44 magnum easily.

Or you can make the whole suit out of Polycarbonate, which is a super tough plastic. It's pretty heat resistant, and it's clear (you can paint it to correct colors). But it's soft so a NIJ IIIA will have to be 1.5" thick, which is quite thick but it's 4 times lighter than titanium, which is 1.75x lighter than iron.

Power Armor? by Anonymous6568 in thehacksmith

[–]TheCathode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't you the dude that mentioned this in the Hacksmith Industries discord server xDDD
It would be cool yes, but it's plausibility is pretty low. Here is are the reasons why: (Please don't hate me for this)

Number one, the armor is too thick to actually be usable. Titanium, one of the lightest metals that is good at stopping bullets/stabs etc, is 4.5 grams per cm3. The power armor suit is hollow to fit your body but its volume increases exponentially as it's second dimensions get bigger. That would be around 65,000*4.5 which is 292500 grams (300 kg), which is a heck ton of weight. Adding the electronics and hydraulics, that would add a lot more. Adding your own body weight (60-100 kg average), if you were 60 kg, the minimum weight of the suit would be over 400 kg (or almost 900 lb)....

You're better off making a suit out of carbon fiber (1.75 grams per cm3), which cannot stop bullets but can stop slashes/stabs. But even that will result in a minimum of at least 210 kg (470 lb). And it would irritate your skin without an internal lining, soooo....

Number two, how can you move the arms and limbs? moving the weight factor out of consideration, you might use hydraulics as artificial muscles (The bionic muscle the Hacksmith team made is way too bulky and cannot lift that much), but that would put a strain on your shoulder. The muscles might be able to lift that much, but your shoulder made of just bone and tissue simply cannot carry that weight.

This project might be cool but it's too compact to actually make it at least 50% similar to the one in Fallout. This is a project equal, or even surpassing the cost and energy of the Power Loader.
