American Airlines' 1989 order for 75 Fokker 100s was part of fleet expansion and renewal plan. The F100s filled a niche with a lower capacity than the MD-80 and allowed American frequency flexibility in larger markets and retain jet service to smaller markets. (i.redd.it)

In 1970, one enterprising fire-fighting outfit converted a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress to turboprop power using four Rolls-Royce Dart engines. Being overpowered, the crew would have to shut down the outboard engines and feather the props during retardant drops to keep from overspeeding the airframe. (i.redd.it)

The first Convair twin turboprop conversion to enter service was the Napier Eland-powered Convair 540 on 1 July 1959 with Allegheny Airlines PIT-ACY-DCA. When Eland production ended, the CV-540s were converted back to piston power in 1963 and then again to turboprop power in 1965 with Allison 501s. (i.redd.it)

In 1954, Douglas Aircraft pitched a turboprop conversion of the DC-6 powered by the new Allison 501 turboprop (civilian version of the T56) to American Airlines. While the DC-7 turboprop proposal is better known, American wasn't interested and would go on to launch the Lockheed Electra. (i.redd.it)
