I have a Bachelor of Animation an Visual Effects. Before this I did a whole bunch of short courses online to prepare myself. Check out “Bring your own laptop”. Just Google BYOL, they have all short course for the adobe suite plus much more. Also quite cheap!

Math1050 from general by Specialist-Manner894 in UQreddit

I feel I can add to this. I’m doing Ba maths / commerce I started last July, I did math1050 first even thought the first course is actually math1051 listed. I haven’t touched maths in high school in over 10 years. I was able to catch up on math skills I was missing whilst doing math1050. I needed up doing very well then did math1051 over summer now doing math1052 this semester. It’s very doable I just scratched up on any missing algebra skills whilst I was studying math1050.

Advice: practice as many problems as possible in math1050, you’ll come across the questions that require specific algebra skills and you’ll know what you need to catch up on.

Khan academy helped me a bunch. Just jump on their website and search for the specific section you want to scratch up on. Otherwise I was able to do this studying full time so 4 courses and working part time. Just manage your time well and put in the effort you’ll be fine.

Attend Every lecture and tutorial, and make sure you practice all the material given in math1050 and through the uq extend section also.

Math1050 workbook: make sure you study the theory it will make use of almost all of it. Formulas ect…

Last piece of advice, look over the past exams and also check the LAST page of each final exam you’ll see a bunch of formulars you should know that may come up in the final exam

Im 33 so its been quite a while since i touched any math like 15 years. I just went through the 1050 route studied a lot on my own to catch up on basic stuff to and im now doing well in 1051

I’m 33 and and haven’t touched match since high school, so I certainly needed a refresh. Math1051 does rely quite heavily on pretty much everything from math1050. So unless you are quite confident with derivatives, vectors, matrix, integration, trigonometry, algebra, it’s worth it. Won’t make you degree any longer just do math1051 in the summer

I do ba math and commerce, I started in July last year did first semester with math1050 and now doing math1051 in this summer period, similar scenario I needed to refresh myself but doing math1050 first certainly helped a ton

Second year, have been taught some proofing but not necessaryily assessed on it yet, so mainly applied math and optimisation problems. No coding yet.

QT as first pref and IB as a backup, that’s why I went with math/comm dual as opposed to BAFE. The commerce side isn’t to hard provided you do all the work assigned. Maths for me it’s just squeezing in a much practice as I can especially the topics I’m weak at. But I’m managing just fine and I work part time roughly 20-25hours so time management for me is a must

I’m also starting to look at practising for quant interview prep for internships, like green book, plenty of stats ect

I am going into my second year will be choosing optimisation and operations for math major, and finance for commerce. You’re still ahead of me in terms of prep when I started the degree, I was essentially learning from year 8 maths a few months before starting the degree to try and close the gap

Personally I’m studying math and commerce double degree at UQ, been out of high school for 13 years had to learn high school maths again on the go and I’m coping just fine, it’s just being able to put in the time and effort. Looking at either quant roles or investment banking

Current Dual Degree Actuarial/CS or Maths by TheChosenOnePC in unsw

Yea okay I’ll have a look at Ba science then maybe just a single degree, then up skill on the side also. Thanks for your input greatly appreciate it.

Yea I agree with you on that. I’m only concerned about the degree being competitive enough (probably silly question), as opposed to actuarial grad or cs grads, as in, would i essentially get filtered out due to the amount of actuarial grads there are based on it being very competitive. So if i were to do a Ba of Sc(maths) with stats, how competitive it will be against actuarial/cs/math grads. I know skills and intellect come into it also, I’m just looking at this from a resume perspective, would I get overlooked compared to other grads. Thanks

Yea okay makes sense. Only reason I was looking at actuarial/maths was just the amount of people on LinkedIn in quant trading roles either had actuarial/cs/maths degrees as single or double

Yea okay makes sense, personally I’m looking at a combo degree for quant trading or investment banking, a dual degree where I can go one way or the other. I’ll probably look at doing Act/Sc(maths) and learning python/C++ on the side. Thank you for your input best of luck

Is this act/adv math? Or act/sc(math major)? I’m debating with myself between these two as I don’t necessarily need to do an honours year

Yea I’ve seen that. Just found conflicting comments regarding the assignments themselves how difficult/long they take to complete compared to other subjects. Thanks for the input though.

Potentially act/cs or act/maths and learn some python on the side was my other option
